  • AHOY! In this episode, we leave Fernandina Florida and cruise a mere 7 nautical miles to Cumberland Island. It was our 5th leg of our Great American Loop Adventure. We swatted enormous horse flies and dropped anchor for the first time. We had planned to put the tender in and cruise on over to the island to explore but we chickened out. We did not have enough confidence in our anchor to leave SeaSHINE. And putting the tender down in the wind made us nervous. Oh well. Baby steps.

I had to laugh! I have been around those flies before and felt that moment. They can really add to the adventure!

Those darn flies were the worst! Glad to know we weren't the only ones who react that way to them LOL

Welcome to the GA coast. As I mentioned in another episode, my wife and I live on Saint Simons Island, and we both grew up on the Island. Well, I grew older but never up. You got to experience how we keep track of the seasons on the coast: Gnat season, horsefly season, deerfly season, mosquito season, tourist season, hurricane season, Braves-lose-in-the-post-season season, and the most important season of all, college football season. We used to take my dad's boat from SSI to Cumberland on the weekends to camp there. We were teenagers and therefore idiots and sometimes forgot to check the weather. Then we had to be rescued by my best friend's dad, who owned all the tugboats for the port of Brunswick. Och weel. I learned at an early age that I should fly off ships and not drive them. Fly Navy.

Love every bit of this -- the seasons especially LOL. Also glad to know that we weren't the only ones surprised by weather/waves in the sound. Did you land on aircraft carriers???? If so, IMPRESSIVE!!!

The only defense against horseflies is full body armor. Those things are worse than Canadian mosquitos.

The poem is "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, big guy.
    And it's Henry David Thoreau
All those Lit classes had to pay off sometime.
    Seriously - AWESOME video!

We found the whiteboard to be super helpful since plans change so much. It also let the whole crew see what the plan was. Thanks for the encouragement :) and for watching!

LOL. One of my mottos is "Safety First." The kids would probably I rather not have that motto but they are stuck with it. They are too precious :). Thanks for the sweet comment!

The first time we anchored was in the Bahamas. Did not get a wink of sleep. By the time we started back 4 weeks later from the Exumas we got the hang of it and for the most part rested well. You guys/crew are doing great. Really enjoy your videos.

Thank you for another great episode. I am learning so much! I hope the home sickness was short lived, but I can imagine that is totally normal. Would love to eventually see a breakdown of fuel consumption, how many times you booked a marina etc during your year, Unless I missed that from a video a few months ago. Keep them coming!!!
