It was really cool my friend. So many folks to talk with at all times of the day and night. You could get on the air at 1am and there would be some guys chatting it up about whatever. Almost every channel had a group or click that hung out on it, and there were some really great CB meetups where everyone would get together and BBQ out or just hang out and talk radios.
I wish they would come back, and its always possible.

That's a great old radio - glad to see its still working! I got a chuckle out of your comment about the alarm in your Cobra...Back in 1990 or so when I was a teenager my dad bought me a Uniden Madison for Christmas that had a digital alarm clock in it. Back then I was so into CB that I did use the alarm to wake up to my buddies talking on channel 5...the good days...

Very kool older radio. Late 70s my buddy and I had Tram SSB radios.... extra channels, and foot warmers.....we called them. We had great time, had them mobil mounted, talked twenty- thirty miles apart...skip almost unlimited, well half the globe, maybe. I still have a couple in a box...may get them out.. thanks for the vids.

cool old radios, one of the loudest radios I ever heard in 50+ years in CB was those cobra 135,139 series of radios. the guy had a D104 and a "tune-up" and it was so loud it hurt my ears at times. my wife found a 139 and several others radios and amps at a yard sale a few months ago for $25 bucks! 2 of the 5 radios didn't work all amps worked. love them yard sales. My first cb base station was a Cobra 1000GTL. Saved up my money (if I remember correctly, almost $500) and picked it up from a local electronics store. Loved that radio. Used it for years. Wanted the 2000GTL when it came out, but a pending trip to Europe (9 years) made that infeasible. By the time we got back, both radios were off the market.

Back before CB really took off, my buddies and I used to ride our bikes around the neighborhood talking to each other, and any bases we could get to answer us, on our cheap walkie talkies. Had a ball, and get to visit many local guys who had some awesome radio setups! Some had amps that boosted their normal 5 watts to 100, 500, and more!

@@norman2999 Well, seems like you and I followed much the same path! I loved leafing thru those old Shack catalogs too, tho the radio I really wanted was a Midland 5 watt talkie that had the knobs on top of the radio. My Dad nixed that however. Later on my own I would have not only a great base radio in the Johnson Messenger, but also some really great vhf Motorola receivers when I became friends w/several local old time 2 way radio techs. Most have passed away, but they steered me to becoming a ham, as they all were, and getting my general ticket (30 yrs ago!) Sadly I'm not as active as I used to be. My main rig was/is a Kenwood TS-430s, MFJ Versa-tuner, and feeding an extended Zepp antenna. Once in awhile being close to an Interstate, I time thru the old cb channels. Not the same tho.

@@b3j8: Hi Terry! You're right when
you say it's not the same (as it was
      back in the day). but...But...BUT....
I do indeed believe that CB Radio
      can make a strong comeback.
One thing about the CB lifestyle
is that we were all OUTSIDE!!!!
      People got out and socialized!!
People got out in their cars, got on
the CB and said let's meet at
      the A&W, or McDonalds
      (or wherever)and compare CB rigs!
      People became friends and
      "Good Buddies"!! Nowadays kids
(& adults) have their noses buried
      in their cell phones and
they're ALONE!! We got off our
butts and got out & about!! If there
was a snow storm, you hopped on
the base station!! Even if you had
      disabilities, someone would pick
you up, hand you the microphone
and off you went!! I think if we
      introduced CB radios to the
      younger generation, it just might
take off again. We gotta make
sure that they get SSB CB radios
(for the range & skip), otherwise
they might not be too interested.
Yes, I know, there's always HAM
      radio, but smaller steps first!!
I want to get my HAM license
ASAP so I can get started on
that too!! First I want to make
a base station antenna out of
      one(or more!!) 102" steel whips!!
I too have to watch my $$'s
      because of my disabilities. My
      doctor's (& surgeons) tell me I
can't work anymore as it can
      be much too dangerous. That's
why I decided to treat myself to
      a sweet RCA Co-Pilot 14T-302
40 channel SSB CB radio!! It came
with a little K30 magnetic mount
      antenna. I scored both from
the same girl!! First night out I
      heard (via SKIP) people in
Rhode Island & Texas!!!! I got
the radio about a month and a
half ago. It was made in 1978
      and still sounds super-great!!
Next thing I want to investigate
is the use of two or more antennae
      on a base station setup.
Two whips, or two mag-mount etc.
I want to read up on the theory,
      possibilities, etc. Tell me your
thoughts on this, I'm always eager
to learn!! Gotta run for now, I'll be
back in about an hour or so.

Google "EXPO KIT" back in the day you would mail order one of these kits "Expo A" or Expo D" depending on the radio you had and then pay someone or if you were brave, you would install it yourself. This gave you one or two extra switches that took you "out of band" and gave you what people still refer to a "uppers and lowers" channels above and below the normal 40.
These days there isn't much use for it, but back in the day when all 40 channels were in constant use. Folks would switch to the uppers and find a clear channel to chat there.

I remember those models and still have an old Cobra 139-XLR with a DigiScan on it. Also have a old 139 Cobra base which also still works except for a 4-channel
(ch 19...) slot which means it has a single crystal out on the hetrodyne board. The Cobra 138 mobile has the same board in it less 120vac power supply. The
PLL controlled radios had more channel rejection BUT, a good ole International Executive, Lafayette and many old single non-hetrodyne synthesizes rigs were
great against bleedover. The problem with them was it took 2 crystals , one for Tx. and one for Rx. The best that I worked on was the Hygain Utopia 623 base.
The old hetrodyne crystal rigs and the early PLL units had a lot of channel rejection problems. Some of today's rigs are much better in that respect and more
have more sensitive receivers minus, modifying them for extra SSB use. Most of my old friends went with the Yaesus, Kenwoods and Icoms for SSB use.
Those rigs were illegal on CB because of the power limit set by the FCC but were real clean in signal output if properly setup and used. Thanks for the review
    on the old-time radios!

Nice old radio. The hand mic you have there (IMHO) is a heavy duty built mic, but after I purchased mine, I found it to choke down my audio. I need all I could get in my mobile, and I went with the Palomar SL41 ( out of production?) and have had good results. I know different radios, etc will have different results, just sharing mine. Most operators that I know that have used them like them for the ruggedness, but found out that they do not put out the modulation that they wanted. When you are trying to get over a pile up in skipland, you need all the help you can get. That is why at the beginning of my first post I started out with a disclaimer of IMHO.10-4

these are built like tanks, they were very well built. It is not a CB you want to go into if you are a screwdriver expert, it does not use a modern PLL, it uses two chips to generate its channels. It uses a very good crystal filter for SSB so is a lot better than a lot of CBs out there. This thing was not built to a budget, it was properly built. If it need attention, it will hurt your wallet There is a lot of work to tune them up, a lot of work! It is best to check for leaking electrolytic capacitors as they are getting a bit old now and are inclined to leak. They leak onto the PCB and eat away at the circuit board. Word of warning, mains voltage is exposed when cover is off, none of the mains wires are insulated and are near the edge of the radio, so be warned. You are right about the clock light, it is not a bulb, it is a neon to keep it a dim light for the very reason you said. Lovely bit of gear, well worth holding onto, but do get the capacitors checked to make sure they are not leaking.

Probably one of the reasons for the alarm/on feature is that some people are on a schedule or want to get on-the-air at a certain time (perhaps to host a radio net, etc.). Having the timer helps a lot to ensure that.

I think the reason for the government looking the other way was because so many people were grabbing a cb radio so quickly and ignoring the idea that you needed a license for cb at the time of when it spiked in the 1970s and 1980s, Supposedly.

    • @spaceflight1019
      @spaceflight1019 Рік тому

If you look through the CB radio magazines of the 1960s there was a sense that the FCC was losing control over the CB band. Despite numerous rule changes they had been unable to prevent it from becoming a de facto ham band, and worse, it was becoming a social media service with hordes of teenage kids taking it over in the hours after school and the evenings. Housewives filled the airwaves from the morning until the kids got home from school.
They raised the license fee from $8 to $20 in hopes that only serious users would apply but this just increased the numbers of unlicensed operators.
After the 1973 Arab oil embargo the license fee was eliminated in a last desperate attempt to at least know who was on the air but they eventually eliminated the license altogether.

It's a shame, that it was modified, now it's contraband (no PUN intended). The FCC's grip on technology has always made anyone operating radio over 155.3 miles (SSB?) a criminal. Really it's kind of a pirate rig!

A guess, but an educated one:
I would bet that the government moved away from CB licensing, because most of 'em are mobile. Most of the radios never transmitted from the same place twice. It would have been impossible for them to find those who ignored their law.
If they could, and there was money to be had in such fines...believe me...they would still be involved.
