      @@gedofgont1006 Anticipation makes a difference because it gives you time. He’s gotten much better at disguising his shots. There’s two basic ways of doing that, one is faking one way and doing something else, and the other is setting up the exact same way but being able to hit different shots from the same set up. One shot he’s gotten amazing at his hitting cross courts when under duress in the back of the court. Farag loves to cut off backhand rails, and keep his opponent pinned back, but since Coll can go cross court even under pressure, he has to play more honest.
      It’s a purple patch right now, everything working. Hope he stays healthy.

    Coll is playing so simple, he's not looking for nicks, he doesn't have any fancy shots, nothing complicate. But all his basic shots are right on the spot, almost every single time. And his anticipation is at his own level.

  • @YT-wg8vt
    @YT-wg8vt 2 роки тому +5

    At the moment, Ali hasn't quite figured out how to play this improved version of Coll. You could see the frustration in his play and his tactics. He even admitted such in his interview at the end, where he said he let the blown opportunity of winning the first game (where he had 2 game balls) affect him mentally in game 2 and, subsequently, the remainder of the match. Coll's ability to use height, on his cross-court lobs (either side) and especially in his lift down the back-hand side along the wall when Ali hits short to the front left, is now so consistent and spot on. Even yesterday, I was taken aback by his width and depth along the forehand wall. He was not afraid to play down the forehand side with Ali. Then, throw in his much improved short game to go along with his already well-known out-of-this world level of fitness and you've got a guy right now playing at the top of his game. As my son said during the match yesterday somewhere in the 2nd game, how do you actually game plan against this guy right now? Where are the weaknesses? How do you break him down?

    To me, Coll's most obvious predecessor is Peter Nicol. They are not quite the same: I would say Nicol hit the ball harder but less accurately. But both won by anticipating and getting to every ball so early that their opponents would still be recovering from their previous shot. If you can do that, you don't need fancy shots! I think it's best for squash if there's a mix of styles; messy nick shoot-outs with no real squash in between are boring too. For me the early 2010s matches between Ashour and Willstrop were some of the best ever due to the extreme clash of styles.

Willstrop used to display much of the same shot selection as Coll does today, most notably the lobs, counter drops, and fading straight drives, and he hadn't yet developed the windmills or extreme shoulder turn drives that he plays today now he's unable to rely on his movement as much.

    Stroke call at the end of the second another travesty, push your opponent into the ball without being anywhere near and you'll get it. Fully agree with Farag's irritation there, although basically every player does it at least once per tournament. Just judge the let at the moment of player-to-player contact, not a second later when ball and players have moved.
