Free hardwood flooring for the diy outdoor kitchen in the form of dead-standing ash trees is found in the forest around the cabin courtesy of the emerald ash borer. The ash trees are well seasoned and very straight so I will be making many things with them around the cabin, including a cordwood floor for the outdoor forest kitchen, planks for counters and furniture, arrows for target practice,
dowels, tool handles and more. In Episode 15, I'll level the cordwood pieces and fill in the gaps with clay or sand.

In all of the building you do, I can't help but laugh a little at your side kick, Cali. She is right there at your side or under foot much of the time. I think she is your inspector... I think you are a very patient man to be so kind to her and her love of chasing after her toy. Thank you for sharing so much of your life and hard work.
I don't think people realise the peace, serenity and calm of your videos comes from the outdoors in places like your cabin location because it is completely void of music, other people around, traffic, etc. If you add those things in, your videos are still the best videos on youtube because of your content, camera work and editing but they would loose their relaxing, calming and peaceful effect. Only when people realise where that relaxing, calming and peaceful effect comes from will they be able to find it in their own lives.

Carl Ross Noooooooo while I agree it’s that good, when TV has taken over other UA-cam channels it looses its appeal as being real. I use to watch a trapper in the Yukon for years then it was picked up for TV. No more youtube and he travelled the world and did only the TV show.
Another medium Shawn could look into could be writing a book. With his background, it does not sound like a longer writing project would not be out of the question. With his amount of followers on youtube, I think he would make a decent profit with it. The only downside would be if the book was popular enough to justify a tour, which would take him away from his life at the cabin.
I know I would buy the book.

hmm pole barn style with wattle and daub walls would be feasible to accomplish in the month or two left before things get down right chilly ... perhaps as a work shed for the foot vise and a future pole lathe and work bench with tools storage and (gstove) heater ;)

This is one serious channel that's a must-see, not just for the creative work and ingenious ideas, but also for the life and work values one learns from each episode. What good start with such a good music
What an fantastic idea for a floor. If I had a rustic home I wouldn’t mind that inside my home with cement in between the logs and some sort of lacquer coating on top for ease in cleaning. You are so inventive.

You take Lincoln Logs to whole another level! That is one of the coolest ideas for a floor way to go!!
The clay will hold moisture and when it freezes will expand pushing the floor around, a mix of sand and small stone be good for drainage

Awesome idea for the floor. When you showed the salamander it made me smile. I grew up in an old farmhouse in the country and we always had salamanders, red efts, tree frogs and spring peepers around the house or in the basement. Now i live in the city and never get to see them unless i go hunting or hiking in the woods. Thats one of the main things i miss about living in the country, all the critters. 😢😊

When I was a Kid in 1960 about 8 years old My Dad Built a Huge Log Cabin like you and with Outhouse and everything possible off the Land he bought in Splendors Texas, Your Place reminds me of it and it still stands today operable but upgraded to sewer system and water. I know how to use a chain saw and make logs and cut them at a early age. He spent three years building everything and I helped every chance I could. He built a Outdoor Kitchen also with a Earthen Oven Steel insert from a 1" thick culvert cut in half steel. That was heavy. Full old timey Wood Stove and we stayed there during the Missles of October. Everyone was pretty edgy then. Your place Looks pretty much the same. Excellent videos.

I love the floor design with the tree cuttings!! It is much more interesting than a flat boring floor lol. I'm anxious to see it finished. I'm glad your finger is healing well. Cali always makes me smile when I see her sweet face. My Granddaughter, who I live with, loved seeing Cali as well as the Salamander. She is 9 and very interested in many subjects so I had her hear what you said about the Salamander.

Your videography production quality is really great man. All your various angle shots, b rolls & drone cuts are really awesome. Has a bit of a les stroud vibe thats kept me watching for a while now. Your editing is really great too. I know how much you put into doing all that & respect you a lot for it. I don’t know how you can physically do all the stuff you do for the cabin etc, plus film it in multiple shots making sure it’s all in frame & focused then after all that edit the tons of footage together in such a perfect cohesive way. You have natural talent that normally takes a whole production crew to pull off. Keep up the good work 👍

Yay, extra episodes are always a treat. Love the wood coin flooring idea. It'll wear well since it's end grain, will last a long time. An idea I had was to add a layer of compacted gravel under the floor to raise it up and to drain water away from the wood. Then use sand in between the wood coins to lock them in. Was thinking raise the floor up to the level of those horizontal logs you wedged in so they act like steps instead of being a trip hazard. Anyway, looking forward to the next video.

Cali just loves it whenever you dig anything, so she has her varied kinds of play. It's hard to believe Autumn is only a month away! Like that floor idea! By now your finger needs a strong very warm salt bath for no less than 20 mins, when the rest of your fingers starts looking like raisins, you‘re done. Dry your hand and go to bed & let the air get at it, repeat for 4 or 5 nights! Thx for sharing!

I don't think it really matters if the floor will never be REALLY even. In the woods one is used to having to lift their feet when they walk over something always in your way when walking. Better then a mud floor on those rainy days for an outdoors kitchen.
We have a lot of beetle killed timber here in my home state of Montana. Sad to see.
