Love this guy. Such a modest and capable craftsman and no ”schtick” to his videos.
Wow, that was scary! I kept yelling: "support the roof, for goodness sake!" 😅
I did enjoy the Argosy project, can't believe it was three years😮
It will be nice to have a regular predictable series though, can't wait for the next one.👍😄
I kept yelling "stop kicking that!! it is supporting the roof!"
Yes good thing those 4 foot boards were still there keeping it in place.
Glad I found this series, my deck seems like a cousin of yours. I was going to try and tackle it myself, but I'm going to watch these before, I start with a plan.
Thank goodness you decided to renovate before it collapsed. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the series. Sounds like your buddy knows what he's doing.
Looking forward to the build videos. It was great seeing you and your dad in Austin last weekend. Thanks
Thanks for stopping by!! We had alot of fun at that show. I think my Dad slept for a whole day after that show!!!
Fantastic work, Andy! 😃
But yeah, it was looking pretty bad! 😬
We have a Brazilian hardwood called Garapeira... I have no idea if it gets to the US and with what name. But it's pretty heavy and termites HATE it. It's a fantastic wood for cutting boards and even for outdoor use. It should be a fantastic option to use there, but...
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I understand your frustration, Andy. I moved into my now 13 year old house 3 years ago. My deck is rotting away also. I'm in the process of replacing it with a concrete slab about 3 inches above grade to solve the problem a wooden deck faces.
Bill
You're extremely lucky that that roof didn't fall down on you. The more you took apart the more unstable the roof structure became I was cringing
So psyched for this build. Thanks Andy !
Held up by paint and luck. Wow that’s crazy! Lucky the ground didn’t settle more and even more lucky it didn’t all collapse from one of those Superman jumps lol.
I recall awhile back that you mentioned about tearing out the old deck. Wow, what a mess. Accident waiting to happen. Nothing worthwhile is done overnight, takes time to do the job properly. Thanks for the video
Well said!
@@AndyRawls I appreciate your Gal. 1:10. Keep up the good work
I totally feel for you. We bought a 100 year old home in Portland, Oregon in 1993 only 3 months after getting married. It was the house from hell with massive wet wood termite damage, oil furnace failures, 4 layers of composite roofing (only 3 is legal), water leaking into the in-ground basement (there's a reason you don't generally find in-ground basements in Oregon), etc etc etc. We had no money but we had a close friend that was a general contractor that we could trust to help us differentiate between must do's and nice-to-have's. Glad you've got that friend - they're worth gold so be sure to get him something nice when it's all over!😀
Wow, dude, you bought that house knowing about these issues? Damn!
@@idontthinkso666Alas, the home inspector missed all of it. We bought it thinking we'd just purchased an old but sound home. As we were to learn later, home inspection is a completely unregulated industry. We were fresh out of college, newly married and broke. It was an extremely tough period where my wife worked full time, I worked about 70 hours a week, and we were facing this mountain of house issues. We learned a ton about ourselves and home construction at that time and we laugh about it now.
It looks like the roof was added after the deck was built, and instead of building roof posts to the ground, they just set them on the existing deck.
You know I never even considered this but I think you might be right. It kinda makes sense the more you think about it.
I'd say with 100% certainty that Olivier is right. You can always tell by the stages in the construction. The next step--which thankfully they didn't do--was to close it in and make it a screened in porch.
Looking forward to the build. Thanks
Part of your audience turned their collective heads to the side and said, “yellow pages, what is he talking about” lol… I miss the good ole yellow pages
Haha! So true! I remember making money as a kid delivering the yellow pages.
I like a nice piece of ash, don't you?
Glad you got it done safely and beautiful. My deck is 26 years old and I am afraid to see what it looks like under it.
Whoever built that deck had zero knowledge of deck building. How it was even still standing has me baffled. I think using your buddy Travis is a very wise move. The lift the roof took was amazing with the temporary posts. On to a safer superior properly built deck.
… it’s in bad shape … drinking game
Fascinating! Thank you.
No I did not know that Andy! I hope you and the wife thank the Lord Jesus for allowing your little guy to hv Life with you! Hey he is in a way a Miracle Baby!
I am now a Finish Carpenter/ Contractor but I don’t do Decks ! However let me finish with this! I was a Police Officer 30 Years in a rough City! When I retired I was offered all these nice high paying jobs? Run an Academy , Teach , Run a Red Light Program (Administrator & Referee) , all 75-150 plus a year job?
But early in my career I held a little guy as he passed from this world to Jesus’ arms all because he was hungry? And made a dangerous choice to cross a busy road in front of me ( I did not hit him another man did totally not his fault). I seen so many little ppl die besides all the clowns whom I really don’t give two shakes about! So I knew I needed a hard, but satisfying job ? Carpenter! It’s been rough and great and now at 65 in good shape & health ? I think I will finish on the job!
Take care of that beautiful little family Andy! Great video series? Maybe I will do Decks? Or Sheds? Just an add on?
"HIIYYAH! That's how we do it". Strong uncle Rico impersonation 🤣.
Given the age and build quality, that deck has lived a good long life. It must be very dry there because I have buildings with proper footings, vapor barriers, etc., that are rotting after 20 years.
The new deck looks awesome in the background. I´m glad that the roof hasen´t collapsed on any of your family members.
Wish I could still work with my dad, he passed away a year ago. Enjoy your time with him. Great vid, thanks.
What kind of boots do you wear? I’ve been looking for a nice comfortable pair of boots for my shop
3 years for the Argues, but well worth it. When you get yours done can you pop up to Oklahoma and do our porch?
Great to see your content again. I thought you had stopped posting....? Or is that just he algorithm?
Andy i love your videos
Wow… that was a horrible framing job!
I like watch guy build stuff, me big happy when he big make things
👍👍👍😎😎😎kool
( Read this with a Kiwi accent ) In this video, a man inspects his rotten old deck, a deck so old and rough people get splinters from touching it. The man and his Father have a good look at the deck, before ripping the deck to pieces, ready to build a nice new, solid and rigid deck..
Great video Andy, it’s a miracle this roof didn’t collapse before this. Unbelievable how this was built..
Love the video can't wait for the next one
Hi Andy, I did enjoy the Argosy Project and will look forward to this one also at a much quicker pace! I am very glad you are getting rid of the dangerous eyesore of a deck. God bless and take care from your long-time California subscriber.
Take a quick look at the posts Jimmy Diresta has on his new old house and leveling post supports
Will do thanks!
I have used thermally modified wood and it is crap. Sorry Andy!
Just curious what makes you say that? I’ve had it in my deck for over 3 months now in the Texas heat and this summer has been intense 100 plus temps all summer. I’ve had no issues with it. It’s not warping, it’s not splitting and once you oil it the color is amazing.
The first thing I thought when you started to tear away the old deck was, you better support that roof first. I was waiting for it to come crashing down.
Over my years in the remodeling business, I've seen things you wouldn't believe unless you saw it.
Hey it lasted 50 years.
Renovating an abandoned deck....
Definitely enjoyed the video, Andy. Certainly is a big project!
Thanks Rick! Hope you’re doing well
Looking forward to seeing this build!
This is going to be a great series! Looking forward to no. 2!!
Keep up the good work
Thanks, looks fun
Love your work Andy. Keep it up!
Looking forward to the series 😀
Andy...just as a matter of clarification....When you are building a piece of your beautiful works....you don't call a dining room table a coffee table.....you take the time to call things by their proper name.
Being I'm a Professional Gardener, Turf Manager and hold a degree in Landscape Architecture, I take issue with you calling 'plantings' ....."landscaping". The term 'landscaping' is used to do exactly as the word suggests....scape land....it's moving land. To build a structure...a retaining wall, deck or raised bed is called hardscaping and when adding plants, shrubs and trees it's called softscaping, or planting. Installing a [proper] lawn needs to be completed by a 'Turf Manager'....
You might consider me a 'karen' by explaining these points, however by utilising one word to describe a host of different trades, you delegitimize a whole host of men and women who spend years crafting their trade.
And...between you and me...men mostly call building a garden as the generic term 'landscaping' because of a fear that gardening is woman's work while landscaping is men's work.....
when actually.....creating is anyone's work.
Wow, you have a lot to say about not much.
@@idontthinkso666 and it's people like you who stoke division.....you a Trumpist?....you must be so proud.
