    While in Lockdown, this has been a great project, while following your videos for guidance.
    I started with the cheap set up but I just didn't find it accurate enough for me.
    So I went with this set up
    However I found that putting a booser before the line selector on the right, really gives it a better feel.
    For the likes of out of the black, at the end of the song I play guitar only, then bass and guitar then when it really comes together at the end I kick on the booster, it really sounds great like that :)
    And for the song sleep at the start you can play the guitar only and then boost the guitar just like it songs in the song.
    So this is what I use
    Quincy burmount (thunderbird look alike > kokko Booster > LS2 line selector > Micro POG > DS1> uS600
    And then a behringer TU300 tuner send and return from the line selector < VOX 10 bass amp
    So i found this to really work, I also manged to get the US600 to work well - which I'm using as a PS6 (dive bomb effect like Mike uses)
    At the moment I have it at the end of the rig, I'm due to move it just before the booster as it sounded close to the sound.
    Give it a try :)

      Thanks Kurt, really pleased you've found these vids useful :) I love the booster idea! I'm going to have to give it a try, and yes the US600 is definitely a much more cost effective way of having auto divebombs!

      Haha thanks man, glad you're still enjoying them! Yeh I know what you mean - I've got a feeling that once the next video is made and I can hear it back myself, I'll prefer the 2 amps version but I'm going to try to get each of them sounding as good as humanly possible so it's fair.
      Might take me a while though because I want to film it in the style of my Muse medley, which requires the recruitment of a 2nd cameraman... the first being my tripod ;)

      Can this work with a Digitech Whammy instead of a POG? I noticed on the other method with two amps you need it to have to outputs.

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому

      mkfanforever58 yes the whammy will work just fine with this method (and is probably more fun!) - you can also get it working with the 2 amps setup if you have an ABY switcher. I give an example in this video: ua-cam.com/video/yArjQRJqUTI/v-deo.html

    Toby Wilding Hi Toby - I don't know why but UA-cam won't let me reply to your question directly. Yes, you could use the SwitchBlade+ by just not using both of the outputs - so if you have it on (for example) output A, that would have a cable going back to the return of loop B on the LS-2, but if you switched to output B on the SwitchBlade, where you don't have a cable plugged in, that would effectively break the loop, killing the bass channel.
    Hope that makes sense!

    Hey Alexander, thanks for the great vids, they have been helpful. Does the Boss LS-2 need a SEND connected in order for it to receive the RETURN ? (Provided the INPUT is connected as normal)
    I am after this type of set up but using 1 amp (My Ampeg Heritage 4 x10 rig).
    I want to use the LS-2 for mixing between bass and fake guitar channel and also to sum the 2 signals to go to my Bass amp.
    I want to use the EH Switchblade Plus (I bought one based on your previous vids), to switch between Bass, Guitar or both.
    The best I have come up with is :
    - Bass OUTPUT > INPUT TU3 Tuner > TU3 OUTPUT > LS-2 INPUT > LS-2 OUTPUT to AMP
    - LS-2 SEND A > INPUT SwitchBlade Plus (SBP) > SBP Output A > LS-2 Return A.
    - SBP Output B > LS-2 Return B ( This is what am unsure if it will take the signal as it will have no send B connected)
    If it does work, I can use the switchblade plus to toggle between my guitar options, and just leave the LS-2 on the A+B Mix setting, and use the 1 output to my bass amp.... Looking forward to your reply mate !

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому

      Hey Chris, thanks for the feedback, glad you're enjoying them :) Excellent question about the LS-2! Yes, it does indeed work if the sends aren't plugged in. I've just checked and it also works if the input isn't plugged in too! The way I set it up was:
      Bass > SwitchBlade+ Input
      SwitchBlade+ Output A > POG > Distortion > LS2 Return A
      SwitchBlade+ Output B > LS2 Return B
      LS2 Output > Amp
      This is easier for me to understand, as it's effectively using the SwitchBlade+ to split at one end, and the LS2 to mix at the other. Might have to do a quick video on this setup, because I really like it!
      Hope that helps!

    • @chrisdowner692
      @chrisdowner692 9 років тому +1

      Yes considering the LS-2 can work without the need for any Input or sends connected, this is a neater set up for sure. The Switchblade + is a pretty effective way to switch the signals and this is important considering the pressures of playing live. I did some more testing last night and my SVT Classic head has 2 inputs (1 input is -15db) and both can work simultaneously, so this is also an option for me instead of using the Boss LS-2 to sum the signals into one. The ability to mix A & B is helpful, however I could still achieve this by reducing the amp volume and increasing the guitar overdrive pedal send ..I also just purchased the Marshall Jackhammer to sort my fake guitar sound and hopefully this works well.
      My next consideration is how well a fake guitar will sound through the Ampeg HLF 4 x10 instead of an actual guitar amp (I also have the same Marshall guitar amp as you by chance) ... Any more feedback would be great mate

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому

      Chris Downer that sounds good - I'm assuming the -15dB input is for active basses, and the other for passive? Not a bad idea to use both to mix the signal in. You'd probably want to EQ the guitar signal as well as change the volume with the distortion pedal to have a bit better control (same could be said for this setup).
      I personally prefer 10" bass speakers to 12 or 15 because you get the nice punchy attack and high end clarity - this will help shape the guitar tone better than other cabs with larger speakers. Setting the amp EQ will be important, because you need to keep the bass sounding bassy, without rolling off any trebles and mids that are useful for guitar sounds. Aside from that, it will al be down to the pedals...

    Great trick! I know it's an old video and I don't expect you to reply, but in case you see this message: in this configuration (attached to the LS2), can I still use the tuner for what it is without making noise (like when it's used alone)?

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  2 роки тому +1

      Thank Umberto :) in this configuration, the tuner would kill the bass signal and the guitar signal would keep playing, so no it wouldn't work to silencing it all. You could either put another pedal before the LS2 to kill the sound (another tuner / whatever), or you could dial the LS2 to use the B channel only (using the specific setting), and then you'd be able to just have the B signal, which the tuner would silence. Not ideal I know. How that helps at least :)

    i once designed and built an instrument called a Batar (not to be confused with The Presidents' Basitar) which consisted of a guitar with the first two strings being bass strings and the rest being guitar strings...i mounted one bass pickup sideways above the first bass string and ran it into a bass amp with the guitar's pickups going through distortion into another seperate guitar amp...pretty much produced what this dude is doing with his rig, the biggest difference being the fact that the added guitar strings truly seperated the guit sound from the bass sound, giving overall more control over the seperation of the two...but damn that motherfucker was hard to play properly

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому +1

      ***** haha! That sounds amazing! Fantastic idea to install a bass pickup and send the signals separately but I can see why you'd struggle to play it as easily as this Royal Blood setup!
      Just an idea, but if I were to give that a go, I'd probably simplify it so I had one bass string tuned to drop D and 3 guitar strings, D A and D. That way you only need to bar anywhere on the fretboard and you'd have powerchord + bass!
      Funnily enough I saw a 2 piece band last week (guitar and drums) and the guitar player had it set up with 2 bass strings, 2 string gaps in the middle and 2 guitar strings on the other side. Nothing so clever as yours with extra pickups though! Having built guitars before I can imagine his neck won't stay in shape for long! Also, he 'got around' the playing issue by only playing a bass riff or a guitar riff at any one time...

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  5 років тому

      Yeah absolutely - I would recommend the LS2 for the 1amp version over the switchblade+ and MX400 mixer in the cheap setup video. The DS1 will work fine but there are loads of options for distortion at that price point so it's more a matter of preference :)

      @@AlexanderWright thanks Alex. New to effects so bear with me! Would i still need an amp simulator or an octaver befor ds1 for guitar sound. And will the LS2 do the job of the splitter and mixer in the cheaper set up? Thank you

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  5 років тому

      @@evertonI878 no worries at all :)
      You definitely need a +1 octave pedal before the distortion - you can use the DS1 instead of the amp simulator, or whatever fuzz / distortion / overdrive you can afford or already have. Different pedals will give different sounds, and it really is all down to preference.
      Yes the LS2 will take over from both the splitter and the mixer. The only other thing you'll need is some kind of kill switch in the clean signal path (Loop B in this video), so that you can stomp on it to cut the bass and just have the fake guitar sound. I use the boss TU2 because I got it second hand and was cheaper than the TU3. Any stomp tuner that cuts the sound should work though - the Behringer clone TU300 for example

    Hey Alex, great video! Please excuse my ignorance, as I don't know much about pedals, but I see you've used the tuner to act as a killswitch for the bass signal, but is there a way to use the tuner to kill all the signal (i.e in between songs/tuning the bass) and also another killswitch for the bass signal..?
    Thanks for the help, and again, please excuse me if this is a stupid question, I'm not very clever when it comes to pedals!

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  8 років тому

      Thanks Kieran! It's not ignorance if you want to learn about it :) I actively avoided bass effects for 12 years before forcing myself to learn about them, because I could never get them to sound good!
      I have that same issue when I want to tune and there's no easy way round it - to mute everything you'll need another kill switch after the LS-2. Normally it's best to have the tuner before any other pedals, but if it's in the clean bass loop, it should be fine. If you don't want to buy two tuners, then you could use an EQ pedal where everything is set to -15dB (or whatever cuts the sound), or you could get a volume rocker (looks like a wah but is just for volume).
      Hope that helps!

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому +1

      Maelin PTY Thanks for the great feedback! So what I understand is that you want to keep the clean signal, and instead of running an 2 distortion pedals in the same loop (like in the LS2 explanation video ua-cam.com/video/TtyQBC9DKaE/v-deo.html), you'd like to separate out again and blend 3 separate signals? The LS2 can only do two I'm afraid - the clean signal that is blended in has to go through one of the effects loop in order to be mixed. If you wanted to go up to 3, then you'd either need another LS2, or some other kind of mini mixer. Hope that helps!

For the other hand, the dry signal from the micro pog -> return A. In that way, if you set the "A - By pass mode" on the line selector, you would be able to kill the dry signal (clean bass) and keep the "Effect signal" from the micro pog. It would be possible? Awesome video sir,
    Out of curiousity, do you think that this would sound as good live as if you were working with 2 amplifiers? And if so, do you think it would work equally as well with a guitar playing through a guitar amp?

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому +1

      Thanks man, glad you're enjoying them :) I'm going to do a comparison video next so we can all find out!
      My initial thoughts are that a 2 amp setup will sound better, simply because you get 2 sets of speakers which were designed for a specific set of frequencies, I'm going to try to be as fair as possible in the comparison video though, because I know a lot of people (myself included) would prefer to lug around just the one amp and a few pedals, rather than 2 amps and a couple of pedals!
      As for the guitar amp, I think it could work just as well. It will probably make the guitar frequencies sound better, but I would personally be worried about the speaker's capability of handling lower bass frequencies at loud volumes, both in terms of how it sounds, and if it would cause the speaker some damage.

    What about tone response of LS-2 ? kills it the tone ? cuts it some frequencies?

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  8 років тому

      Not that I've noticed, but I've not investigated the technical side of the pedal's construction. As far as I'm aware it simply creates two loops that can be blended, and the loops themselves aren't affected by loss of tone (experts may prove me wrong!). Hope that helps :)

    What Boss pedal is the green one?! Where did you get it?!

      Douglas Wigg Acosta it's just the bog standard DS-1 guitar distortion pedal - it's just I spray painted mine green for no good reason!

    Would it be cheaper for the 2 pedals 2 amps or is this one cheaper?

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому

      MLG Bagel it depends on how expensive your amps are, but the base difference between the two setups is the Distortion pedal and the LS2 vs a Guitar amp. I generally buy 2nd hand gear, knowing that amps lose their value more than pedals, but if you're buying new, the 4 pedal solution is much cheaper.

    Where would a compressor sit in this chain?

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  4 роки тому

      It's all down to preference - in my opinion the overdrive / distortion does enough compression to not need it in the guitar channel (provided you never want to run that channel clean). Additionally if you're playing royal blood type stuff you're probably not going to be doing much in the way of varying dynamics (e.g. switching between finger picking and slap), so I wouldn't think it would be worth it for levelling out just the bass signal, but it would work if you wanted to do that. I'm sure it would work well before the LS2 if you wanted it on both channels as well.
      Hope that helps!

    Hey quick question. I was wondering if you know how I should set my Boss ps-6 for the fake guitar sound. I cannot seem to find a good setting.

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому

      Field Cate I had a Boss PS6 before I bought the POG, but I couldn't get it to sound very good at all - I ended up trying the Boss PS2 as well and it was the same. The settings I used were to put it in pitch shift mode (not harmonizer mode), and just have it an octave up. I can't remember what position +12 is on the Shift knob, but your manual should tell you :)

    +Alexander Wright Is it possible to use a Behringer AB100 Instrument Amp Selector Pedal instead of the BOSS LS-2 Line Selector or are they different?

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому

      Jamie Dean very good question! The do look similar but the functionality is different. The AB100 works 2 ways - either having 2 instruments, and you use the pedal to select which one you want to go to your amp (A / B swicthing is done on the instruments), or you have one instrument, and can switch between outputs (A / B switching done on the amps). The closest thing Boss do to this is their AB-2 pedal, but if you've seen my other videos, don't confuse an AB pedal with an ABY pedal! The main difference is that ABY can do both outputs at once as well as switching between.

    Can we use an other pedal than the micro pog ?

    • @guitarandbass1995
      @guitarandbass1995 8 років тому

      You probably can but considering the bassist from Royal a Blood uses the POG it would make sense to use one. Obviously depend on budget as these pedals get stupidly expensive.

      @AlexanderWright  8 років тому

      +guitarandbass1995 my thoughts entirely :) Although I'm having a lot of fun with the Mooer Tender Octaver for a cheaper alternative.

      @guitarandbass1995 8 років тому +1

      +Alexander Wright I still have the whammy but use it for guitar more than bass. It's the DT version so it helps with the low tunings. I'll play around and see what works. Was also looking at getting a Boss Harmonist and using the S bend to do those dive bombs he does from time to time :)

    Hey, quick question. I'm in a band playing my bass similarly to Royal Blood, but without the bass elements. (It's just going through a guitar amp with my micro pog) My question is, what is a solid way I can get a similar overdrive sound to them? I've been using a B2 multipedal with a custom overdrive setting, but it's a bit clunky at times. Any ideas?

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому

      Banish ForTwoTurns hey man, interesting to hear you're playing it as a 'guitar' only. I'm no expert on the actual setup, but I know he uses octaves to thicken the sound up (you could use the POG to blend in a tiny bit of bass signal, being careful not to destroy your amp). Another thing he uses is the Boss PS6 harmonizer to add an extra 5th to sound like power chords. If you're not playing the bass side of it, then power chords on the bass would probably sound better.
      Aside from that, I'd say distortion / overdrive is all about preference. I forget, is the B2 a bass FX one? Bass distortion pedals operate on different frequencies to guitar, so maybe a guitar pedal would suit you better in this case. Also, I can't get on with multiFX because I prefer the simplicity of the stomp boxes - and getting the right levels on my old Line 6 bass POD was a nightmare for me!

    • @BanishFor2Turns
      @BanishFor2Turns 9 років тому +1

      Yes the b2 was a bass effects pedal which is probably the reason It's not doing what I want it to. Any ideas on your preferance of an overdrive guitar pedal that could replicate a similar sound the the band?
      Also, the Boss PS6 seems interesting. I'll look into it

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому

      Banish ForTwoTurns well in the actual Royal Blood setup, people are saying he uses a Zvex Mastotron, but I've not looked into it. Because he probably uses high gain on his guitar amps, I'm currently looking into using a guitar amp simulator pedal, so stay tuned!

  • @BartoszZasieczny
    @BartoszZasieczny 7 років тому +1

    How do you record such sound? I'm used to recording bass using XLR output from my amp, but that does not work with similar setup (BigMuff Bass Deluxe, Bass Whammy, LS-2 and TU-1). Should I record 2 tracks separately - clean bass straight from amp output and distorted sound using microphone? And which microphone should I use? SM57/58 would be enough?

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  7 років тому

      I am no expert on recording - I just use a SM58 for these videos because I bought it as a vocal mic didn't want to buy anything else. If I was going to record it properly, I would probably do the bass and fake guitar sounds separately (D.I. the clean bass and mic up the fake guitar) for mixing purposes :)
      For clarity - I would probably record the clean bass take with the DI and then play that back through the pedal setup to record exactly the same take but with the other effects applied in a separate track.

    • @BartoszZasieczny
      @BartoszZasieczny 7 років тому +1

      Thanks a lot! :)
      I'll go for clean bass and *guitar* sound separately for mix - I am incorporating this style of playing in my band. The idea for this setup sounds great, especially as it is more "synthetic" sound than 2 amps & 2 pedals. When you have normal guitars playing in the background it sounds huge!
      Thanks again!

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  7 років тому

      Any time :) you're absolutely right - the extra 'fakeness' of the sound goes really well with real guitars, to fill out the sound - I bet your band sounds massive!!!

    i'm gonna redu the ABY Radial tone pedal demo today! Sorry for the long wait! Did you just get rid of the Switchblade + now that you got the LS-2? That's the only thing that's annoying about the ABY pedal is that it is noisy when stomping on the silver switches compared to the smooth flat no noise boss pedals when turning the off and on. I'm gonna upload that video to my channel on this name I use hear SoseBass 11/2 so if you subscibe to me just look for it to pop up later today when I get off of work and record it for ya. Peace~~ P.S I just ordered a Boss LS-2 and a Fulltone OCD overdrive/distortion pedal!

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому

      SoseBass 11/2 Hey man, no worries - I'm in no rush to get jealous of your gear! ;) No dude, I've kept the SwitchBlade+ for the 2 amp stuff, and actually you can send the ABY pedals output A and B into the LS2 A and B loop return, and mix it down there - if that makes sense? I agree about the pedal action on the Boss being nicer - plus you don't have to be quite so accurate. Have subscribed man - looking forward to it! :)

    • @TheyCallMeNoName34
      @TheyCallMeNoName34 9 років тому +1

      Ok sounds good. And wow I will have to try that with the ABY pedal when that LS-2 comes in. I'm gonna probably be struggling enough playing with the LS-2 as it is but running it threw the ABY pedal does sound useful. What would that benefit? Sorry I've had a long day at work and my brain is kinda mush right now all of a sudden haha!

    • @AlexanderWright
      @AlexanderWright  9 років тому

      SoseBass 11/2 Well it's not that useful, but if you're used to how the ABY works with 2 amps, it just separates the LS2's tasks out - the ABY switches the effects, and then all the LS2 does is mix them into one output.
      The big benefit is that you can get around the LS2 limitation, which is that it only has a certain amount of modes that it can do (because there's only one footswitch)
      A / B
      A / bypass
      B / bypass
      A / B / bypass
      A+B together / bypass
      I might have to do another video on it, because I find it hard to explain things without pictures! Lol.

      Alexander Wright so would I go from the Radial ABY then to the LS-2? I've been thinking of spilting my signals into 2 separate chains and just goin with a dirty chain and a more delay or tremelo reverb etc on the other.... but not sure. I just joined this other band where I'm just strictly bass. What would be the best way to use the LS-2 in my advantage for just rocking the bass amp only. And would me spliting my pedals in 2 separate chains sound like a good idea? Maybe then I can still also have the bypass mode on to where I can also just bypass both channels and be completely clean as well for an option. The only thing that would hurt me is that I like to use a sansamp bass driver at the end of the chain to give my bass amp a better tone and I'm afraid that if I separate the pedals into 2 different chains then I wouldn't be able to have my sansamp amp at the end of both chains to help with the tone and tone shaping.... also I use a 1 spot adapter and daisy chain to hook up my pedals and I'm starting to read and hear that I need to get a voodoo +1 are +2 are something similar to help give my pedals the juice they need because the 1 spots are not good and can A:cause feedback threw amp which I might have just a little but nothing to complain about and B: that the 1 spot daisy chain method means that all the pedals would be using and sharing the same output which could eventually and possibly hurt or damage my pedals. Any help or info on that and do you got one of those are something similar and is this a myth or reality?

      +Osmar de Melo Franco e Souza thanks man - I didn't when I made this video but a few people have pointed it out to me since :) I do like adding a separate sub octave pedal in loop B though, so I can control it with the tuner

    • @umberto3140
      @umberto3140 2 роки тому

      I have the LS2 and I am curious as to how one would do that. I cannot seem to find any combination for achieving the same result as shown in the video (but maybe I am dumb 😅).
      I can only see one possibility to mix A and B to blend the two chains together (the one with effects and the one with clean tone/tuner). Otherwise you either select A or B. Isn't this correct?
