OMGOSH!!! The nvram method worked for my Macbook 2011 - OS High Sierra is now installing as I’m typing this comment!!! I almost gave up out of frustration watching several videos for almost 3 hours and this is the only method that worked!!! It will take a little computer know-how using the log and terminal but he instructions were clear and you can pause the video at any point to make sure you’re doing the right thing. Before you do the nvram mehod make sure you’re connected to the internet and that the dae an time of your Mac is correct. You’re a lifesaver, Mr. Macintosh!!! Thank you so muchh!!! ❤😊

Dude - you are a GENIUS!! My 2011 iMac was failing miserably with reinstall OS after erasing the hard drive. I was freaking out, I have a buyer waiting for this because he needs specifically Garage Band on High Sierra to work with his recording equipment. I tried every other “fix” I could find on the internet, nothing worked. Called Apple Support which was a COMPLETE waste of time. 🙄 Then came you. And even tho the installer error I was having was different from yours, I had nothing to lose so I copied your URL and followed your instructions. I was very excited when I got farther than before (agreed to terms, etc) which I couldn’t have done without you…..but was sadly unable to finish the install. I think I may have performed some fatal error when erasing the hard drive, as I got this error: “Could not create a reboot volume for APFS install.” No idea what that means. Almost got there! 😢
I won an old iMac at auction and did a wipe of it because I didn't have the passwords and wanted it to have a completely fresh start, only then to realize that the OS wasn't going to be easy to reinstall... Thank you so much for this video. Worked perfect on my MacBook Pro 13 inch early 2011. I got stuck in recovery mode with macOS Lion and was not able to install it. I created several USB Boot-Sticks with different macOS versions. The Boot-Stick with High Sierra and change the URL was then a final success. Now back to life with a 1Tb SSD and 8 Gig´s of RAM.

September 2024 - 2010 Mac Book Pro - High Sierra. This method worked. Only difference between the video and my experience is after trying to install after altering the URL it did not work. I shut down the laptop, started again with Command + r and went to try again. It advanced past the server fail. Thanks for the great video.

Thank you! I have a MBA 2015 and I erased its disk (I just wanted a fresh install). Instead of Monterey, the recovery screen got me all the way back to High Sierra. I could just install the newest MacOS, but I wanted to see what it was like to use HS. Thank you for showing us how to fix this issue!

I have a question, for my Mac book (idk what it is 😅) but it says I don’t have enough GB for it and it doesn’t work (I used the sus link ) it said it took 121 GB (etc) but that’s all of my GB so it didn’t work.

I tried this method on my Macbook Pro from mid 2010. But after trying it said the image is damaged. In the log I can see a lot of ' MacBook-Pro ReportCrash[552]' failures. I am connected through Wifi. I tried it several times ( command+R, command+option+R and command+option+shift+R ) all leading to failures. I also followed a lot of ´making MacOS USB with Windows' and ´making MacOS USB with Linux', but they all failed as well. I have .dmg's for Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra and High Sierra. Installing Zorin OS ( Linux ) however is no problem. Thank you for sharing this method and keep up the good work. ( Liked and subscribed )

Did you format it to MacOS Extended (Journaled)? Because it seems like you did APFS.
I deleted something and it only shows 2 things in my start up disk and it’s blank when trying to install Monterrey

iMAC 27in 2017 SSD died, replaced new SSD prompted with the "cannot contact server error". Followed your steps and BAM BAM! it worked, thank you man. Saved me from hours of frustration.

Thanks to your video and the guy on Apple Forums that pointed me here I was able to start a High Sierra installation and I'm beginning to think this machine will be useable after all! I love it when the community helps saving all these old machines that can still serve in a way. This 2011 Mac Mini will play music as the heart of an old Seeburg jukebox that was beyond repair and that I adapted with a screen integrated.

I used the Fix #3 of changing the NVRAM Software update URL and it worked exactly like you mentioned! I was doing a factory reset of my iMac for giving it away and got stuck at this re-install stage after erasing my disk. Until I thankfully found your post. You saved my iMac! Thanks again.

Thank you so much for this video. Worked perfect on my MacBook Pro 13 inch early 2011. I got stuck in recovery mode with macOS Lion and was not able to install it. I created several USB Boot-Sticks with different macOS versions. The Boot-Stick with High Sierra and change the URL was then a final success. Now back to life with a 1Tb SSD and 8 Gig´s of RAM.

September 2024 - 2010 Mac Book Pro - High Sierra. This method worked. Only difference between the video and my experience is after trying to install after altering the URL it did not work. I shut down the laptop, started again with Command + r and went to try again. It advanced past the server fail.

Worked!!At first wasn't working, so I had to delete and create a new partition, and then I was able to follow this process.
Great video! Option+Command+R did the trick for me! Installed the latest compatible OS. Ready to rock n roll some more now!

The url solution in terminal worked great! I didn’t see it in the log file, but I typed it by hand with success.

Thank you! I have a MBA 2015 and I erased its disk (I just wanted a fresh install). Instead of Monterey, the recovery screen got me all the way back to High Sierra. I could just install the newest MacOS, but I wanted to see what it was like to use HS. Thank you for showing us how to fix this issue!

Edit: I got past that point now I’m trying to install and it says the OS X Base System disk is locked.

I have a question, for my Mac book (idk what it is 😅) but it says I don’t have enough GB for it and it doesn’t work (I used the sus link ) it said it took 121 GB (etc) but that’s all of my GB so it didn’t work.

I tried this method on my Macbook Pro from mid 2010. But after trying it said the image is damaged. In the log I can see a lot of ' MacBook-Pro ReportCrash[552]' failures. I am connected through Wifi. I tried it several times ( command+R, command+option+R and command+option+shift+R ) all leading to failures. I also followed a lot of ´making MacOS USB with Windows' and ´making MacOS USB with Linux', but they all failed as well. I have .dmg's for Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra and High Sierra. Installing Zorin OS ( Linux ) however is no problem.

This was awesome! It solved the issue I spent hours trying to fix. It was such a simple fix I don't understand why Apple doesn't release a permanent fix for this issue.
