Salubri the saints who were demonized by the wicked mages and betrayed by their allies I love this clan since it allows to play a compassionate vampire and be a small ray of light in the world of darkness
I think that is exactly why some people hate them. That they seem so obviously good, makes them stick out amidst the other clans. I personally like the salubri. I like the lore that states, Saulot is redemptive, but I also like the lore that says, some Salubri, really were soul eating monsters, or maniacal murderers, pretending to he saints.
It's actually kind of mind boggling that the Salubri were loved by everybody, and then their public image did a complete 180 when the Tremere (often described as being the least trusted clan) told everyone they were soul sucking demon worshipers!

I've played three chronicles with my Salubri, one in 1205, another in 1453 and the last was a Gehenna game. The quiet healer that witnessed her clanmates being betrayed, hunted down and killed, and so she became so angry and vengeful that she decided to go full Warrior caste mode. And only three centuries later she finally calmed down and saw that trying to spill more Tremere blood doesn't really make the pain any less, but instead it made her more susceptible to the Beast... So she decided to return to the way of the Healer, picking up the sword only in case of absolute necessity. Still, when she hunted a demon-worshipper, she was almost killed and fell into torpor for three centuries more, only to be woken up in the Final Nights. (There was also that WHAT A TWIST moment, when the coterie met Saulot posessing Tremere's body and Ahab by his side, so we found out that Saulot had indeed created Baali and couldn't care less about his three-eyed progeny; she managed to kill Ahab, but you can imagine the breakdown that followed). Still, after all that shit she mustered enough determination to carry on the legacy of the clan that might've never been needed by anybody, even by their own creator, but should that matter at all? The world is full of darkness and suffering, so *someone* has to do the job of healing and purging anyways. No matter how it hurts. Ah, the memories.
I agree with the assessment the end, that the Salubri we're just there to demonstrate how ruthless the Tremere are, and making them the only clan that is essentially "good" really rubs the salt in. Tbf, you can make a similar claim about the Cappadocians too. I really like the evolution of Saulots lore, too. The implication that he wasn't what he seemed, that he might have been the progenitor to the Baali as well. And then in 5e they totally spelled it out that Saulot baited and bettered Tremere. But for what? Did he take over Tremere from the start or did it take some time for Saulot to reassert himself and take over? I mean, as a powerful and old Mage, Tremere would've had tremendous willpower himself so maybe even Saulot would've struggled to overcome it. Or did Saulot actually decide he wasn't satisfied with Clan Salubri and wanted to wipe them out and start over?
I forgot which scenrio it was but its was from vamp the masquerade where one of the other options was “the eldest” 3rd gen came and ate the world to go beyond caine. There was the scenerio where saulot has taken over Tremere’s body and tremere was forced to bond his consciousness to his female disciple and childre.
Honestly having 3 eyes is too much of a tell when you have all the forces in this universe. If this was Saulot future proofing he might be one of the smartest in the setting.
Saulot allowed himself to be diabloarzed to counter Merket/Tzimisce when he would attempt to take over Tremere's body to cast the ritual Meerlinda's been working on to command all of Humanity using the true name of Humanity found in our DNA. And since Vampires are still at the end of the day, no matter how much they bitch whine moan and see themselves as better, human. Or at least have Human DNA. Tremere was going to use the spell to end Gehenna by telling all the Vampires (except him and the other ritual casters) to take a sunbath. Tzimisce takes over and says "be of me" then Saulot counters and helps the party be able to beat Merket.
Saulot also really aware what Tremere was really about. I believe Saulot wanted Tremere was going diabloriaze him and he counted on it. Saulot will take the clan Tremere over as his own.
Mahtiel and Rothriel's story is a real heartbreaking tragedy, as is her fate as a heartbroken shell of her former self haunting the place where he fell.
