Which free DAW would you recommend personally? 😃
Tracktion Waveform Free. It’s unlimited and has a nice quick workflow.
@@AudioTechTV Here's to hoping this one will stay free
Just like most people I was surprised the platform lasted so long with no cost. I appreciate them for letting me learn so much in daw form. I still have a lot to learn but Cakewalk gave me that opportunity to get my feet wet.
I was using it since Pro Audio 9 which came out in 1999. There are still times I wish Logic would let me edit clips like you can in Cakewalk.
Well put, you got it in one.
I've used Cakewalk all the way from Music Creator thru Sonar Platinum. That's over 25 years of client projects and music creation using Cakewalk exclusively and I consider the past five years of it being free as a nice bonus. Instead of paying for updates, I stocked up on many instruments and processing plugins. In all those years of paying for Cakewalk, I've been able to provide whatever my clients have requested with zero disappointments. And while it used to occasionally torment me with the always-popular Blue Screen of Death, switching to Windows 11 eliminated that glitch entirely. In short, I welcome Cakewalk Sonar back and greatly look forward to whatever improvements they introduce. The results I have gotten out of it have kept my many business clients happy and loyal. Switching to another DAW makes absolutely NO sense because of the literally thousands of projects completed in this program. Thanks for the video!
As usual, nice one. As a Mac man, most disappointed they've decided to opt to head in this direction: will stick with Reaper for now; no 'Reason' to move off it now...
I love the Bandlab Community and I love how you can upload projects and collaborate. I use it frequently to collaborate, however I really don't produce in Bandlab I just download the stems and I mix and master in Studio One and I do all my production in Studio One. Sounds interesting....though.
It would be too bad if it wasn't free anymore😢
It’s an extremely impressive free program right now. But I can appreciate that at some point they need to make money or at least break even from it.
You’ll be able to continue to use the free version if you already have it so you aren’t losing Cakewalk forever.
@@AudioTechTV If I already have the free version and at some point I want to install it on another computer, can I do
@@AudioTechTV yo is Cakewalk by bandlab can Able to update soon even it is not supported
@@AudioTechTV thanks for clearing that up
Yeah it is, I'll probably abandon the program when that happens. I'll probably switch to waveform free which I'm already comfortable with, or reapers "unlimited" trial
I'm all in on Cakewalk, so I pretty well have to pay whatever they ask, and can take some comfort in that I've been using it for free for several years, even before the sale to Bandlab through past discounts. I still have Cakewalk projects dating back to 2003 and it's nice to know I can still load them up. Having said that, I hope the new Sonar adds some new stuff to make the shift back to a paid somewhat justified. Thanks.
I was a CW/Sonar die hard from 1995 thru the Roland/Gibson/BL debacle. Finally bailed after Gibson & never embraced the BL era. I still have fondness for CW & wish it well, but this is like yet another round of "...Wait! We're changing everything!" I would not bet the ranch that this platform is around in ten years. I am aware that one could also say the same of PT, reaper, etc etc. Thx for the informative vid.
I used to use Sonar/Cakewalk until they stopped developing it then moved to Studio One which is very close to Cakewalk. I miss some things from there like layers within tracks, easy routing, midi fx, groove clips and others. They were also working on audio tempo tracking before Gibson canned Sonar.
As a long time Audio Tech TV viewer I started out with Zane's recommendation to use Cakewalk, but when then moved on to Waveform free when v12 came out. I now have Waveform Pro, the upgrades I've paid for have definitly been worth it. I still drop back to Cakewalk now and then, I like the way it does some things. However, if say I have to upgrade $50 for the new Sonar, it will need to really shine to get my money as Cakewalk workflow is quite clumsy in comparison to Waveform.
In the past, Cakewalk was probably a no-brainer for those on a budget and who couldn't justify paying for a DAW, with all the bills that come through the door each month. Now that people have to pay, I think there are two possible things that could happen. Some hobbyists may need to look for another free option. Others may be prepared to pay, but may start to reevaluate their DAW of choice. They may start to think, "Hay, if I need to pay for this then why not now start to look at other paid options, which could be better for me". Whatever happens, surely for the creators of Cakewalk they won't have a lot to lose, because, up to now, they haven't been making any money out of it at all.
They say there will be different price points. Maybe there will be a free version and then paid to get their samples?
@@JXQU3 The free version will be still available, the only difference is that you will be no longer receiving updates and there will be no support for it. And according to BandLab, the six months deactivation mechanism will be removed after the last bug fix update for "CakeWalk by BandLab" is released.
That depends of the price range. For instance, I'm not from US or Europe, so I don't receive in dollar or euro. If Cakewalk Sonar will cost, for example, 300$ (or €), the minimum wage of my country, I wont be able to buy a license, probably I'll buy a reaper license (60$) or start using the free version of Waveform by Tracktion.
Thanks for the update, much appreciated. My music production is a hobby for self-entertainment. I've used Cakewalk for about 4 years and am most familiar with its processes and procedures. I use it for "traditional" music, (blues, folk, country rock, etc). For a couple of years, I've been using the Ableton Live Intro version. I use it for more contemporary music (EDM, Techno, HipHop, etc). I would strongly suggest that whichever DAW you chose, learn to use it to its fullest potential. Almost all DAWs on the market are good. I chose Cakewalk because it was powerful and FREE! I chose Ableton because of the low entry-level price point and the numerous free and affordable lessons available on the internet.
As a hobbyist I'm switching to Waveform, I was going to anyway, looks cool)
It doesn’t take too long to catch onto the different workflow and once you do it’s a great program to make music in. Thank you for watching. Keep creating! 👊👍
I agree with your point regarding the UI, so I'm actually more interested in Cakewalk Next than Sonar. I hope it's a full fledged DAW and not just some web based DAW like Bandlab is.
I'm excited. You didn't mention the "graphic change" is updating to scalable vector graphics (!) - I work in software myself and that represents a large investment toward modernization by Bandlab. It's the first step toward modernization, actually! We can use it on 4k screens without blurriness or tinyness. Subscription or not, I'm all in and crossing my fingers for a bright future.
Up your game! The competition is tight...
Hi,
Just to add that the new cakewalk sonar will be working with W10 , Cakewalk by bandlab supported old os starting with win8.1 64 bits.
Sounds like some more bad news for home music hobbyists, but your coverage of the situation is balanced and fair as always Zane. 👊👍
Thanks for the update! At about 6:50, what exactly do you mean by a "more modern workflow"? Is there any video of yours that tackles this subject?
I mean a workflow that would be more similar to current DAWs that have been updated in recent years to make doing things and accessing things quicker/easier with less mouse clicks. I don’t have a video that tackles that subject. But maybe I can do one. I actually never thought of it so thank you for the idea. Thank you for watching. Keep creating! 👊👍
I work in the pro industry, and most producers can't comprehend all the options of Cakewalk. So they end up using a DAW that is crippled and has less features so that they don't get lost.
I support whatever Cakewalk is dishing out. I see they remove all the good plugins from the free version. In any DAW, you need a good track leveler/compression/expander, a master leveler/compression/expander, channel tools, equalizer, delays, chorus, pitch shifter, and reverbs. Cakewalk was the only one that had most of those. You could/can buy waves or somethings similar and be set for life.
P.S.
There's like 1% of professional super star producers that know how to crank out projects quickly. I am still amazed at how not-smart most of the top producers are. You get in a studio with them and it takes them 30-45 minutes just to configure the laboratory or decide what sound-banks to use. Cakewalk is one of the view DAWs that allows you to preview and rifle through sounds via SoundFonts. You can open up the midi control track pane and toggle the keyboard arrows and just try out sounds. You can't do that in other DAWs (without the sound engine dying). I remember I went to NYC in a well known studio and they were protools (all day). I got tire of the 1-hour setup times and decided to start bringing in my cakewalk box and we were recording within 5 minutes which is about how long it takes for m1cr050ft to load up sounds. I use server parts, so my RAM is 128GiB and I use U.2 SSD drives since 2006, and optane drives since like 2015. I would literally go to studios with my own box, because most producers are lolly gagging, and trying to figure out how to get their old equipment to load up. I've been doing that since the early 2000s. And here it is 2024 and the new modern producers are even worse. The same goes with video editors and camera men. I have a friend that uses 2 ARRI (alexa) cameras, and it takes them a hour or 2 hours to setup. And then the battery might die and then the equipment is over-heating. "F" all that noise. I'd bring my black-magic, magiclantern canon, or a DJI drone and get the setup done in 15 minutes. These pro producers are slow as molasses. They only use the name brand equipment to look special and ask for the higher prices, but people are catching on. They've priced themselves right out of market. This has been going on since 1999. In video editing, a good RAID setup is required, but most of those guys are slow and don't know of the current technologies. I know why UA-cam took over and hollywood died. I saw it play out in real-time. The professionals are no longer the professionals; they're playing catch-up. Even the new graduates don't know what's up.
You throw cakewalk at them and they don't have clue. Or ask a video editor about using ffmpeg or davinci. They're lost. They don't understand how electricity works, so they don't know have to mix or use polarity and equalizers. So, they have to buy whatever the salesman tells them. Its a weird time to live in. I've been recording since I was 12 in the late 1990s. I'd rarely meet producers that were capable. Even with all this free education and knowledge floating around, they are still way behind. Most of the so-called pro's don't have a clue how to mix, master, midi, mutli-track, and so the industry is filled with mostly niche producers that know there one and only setup.
Use what you can use.
I'm a basic Cakewalk user... basically only for playing tracks and tweaking existing tracks for my live shows. I'm afraid that I won't be able to use my existing program without upgrading to one of these new formats. Will I be able to use my present cakewalk... & if you think I might have a better option, please inform. I really enjoy your very easy to understand explanations. I'm passing your channel onto my musician friends....
I still have the installer folder I wonder if it will still load post era, as I need to clean reset my p.c???
My concern is they recommend an 8 core PC. I have a 4 core i7 3770 that has zero problems with Cakewalk. Is this new version going to cause me problems?
I figured at some point the free Cakewalk offering would go away. I can't speak for anyone else but one of the main appeals of Cakewalk was that it was a free program that was reasonably good. I wish them well, but don't really have any interest in purchasing a subscription or whatever they charge for their new stuff.
The good thing is that if you already have Cakewalk by Bandlab then you’ll be able to continue to use it without any further updates which is fine.
It will be interesting to see how they price it and what the demand for it will be like once it becomes a paid program.
Omg the timing I just installed cakewalk phew....
Yeah, it was just a matter of time. I've always said that sooner or later people will have to pay for using the DAW.
I've worked with Bitwig Studio lately and I'll probably move over to it. The great thing about Bitwig is that it runs
on Windows and Linux. One thing that Sonar will never do.
Thanks for this Zane. Am I right that the free version will still be available for a while? I have a bunch of songs I'm working to finish.
Yes. If you have the free version now you’ll be able to continue using it for as long as you like, they will no longer give updates for it though (after they release the other programs) which is fine.
Great Video Zane.
Cakewalk will probably price themselves out of the market doing this.
There are too many free DAWs that have similar or better workflow and features.
Cakewalk is not Protools and should reconsider their move to a paid DAW since their market is much smaller than AVID and since Protools use to be the de facto standard for the industry.
Protools is still here because of that, surviving the years they lost a large amount of their market due to update issues, pricing and crashing issues.
Although Protools is not the standard now, Cakewalk needs to understand that they never were.
well actualy they are about to do the same shit like gibson back in the day ! as for the " bandlab web thing turned into a daw ( if i understood zane correct ) : i tried it out and was very disapointed to not have all i need to work right there but to kinda klick here and then there to get there .... as soon as i decide either bitwig or cubase is cakewalk down from my pc. i am not gonna support their new insanity turning into some sort of protools
see i wrote to them and gave em an idea what they could do to earn money off of it but they did not listen by saying " there is to many on the market " well noo! because what i told em was something that is nowhere on the market to be found but well ... let em do the shit they are about to do
@@uniquetruth2097 you do have more options than those two.
Traction and Zynewave Podium are just two.
thank you!
Thank you for watching. Keep creating! 👊👍
Hmm. I have an eight-band license for Bitwig, I will consider it if you add the price competition.
Anyway, there is still LMMS.
Off topic: I noticed you did a video on using SSL controllers in Cakewalk. Will you be covering the new UF1 single fader/DAW controller? I'm hesitating because they specifically say they don't support Cakewalk. Hopefully, it's like the 8 channel UF8.
I am hoping to cover the UF1 soon. I can tell you that the SSL UF8 works alright for the basics but there are some things that are annoying like controlling the busses.
Hopefully when they start updating Cakewalk to this new Sonar product they will work on hardware compatibility.
Couple things, Lyric view has always been there it just didn't always work correctly. Secondly, I don't blame them for wanting to keep the foundation as it is. The last time they rolled out a new UI was the X series. X1 to be exact. The amount of complaints we had for changes done (where's my save button/it's now a keyboard shortcut) was massive.
If they want to continue to serve the old school user base that’s willing to now pay for it and not gain many new users due to an older workflow then I can understand keeping the workflow keeping the workflow the way it is.
Sonar has a studio based, great workflow.
I still use Sonar Platinum, so I’m interested what they will do next.
I still have Sonar Platinum but haven't recorded anything in years. In terms of updates or sound engine have I missed anything crucial in these off years?
@@andremiller1566Well, cakewalk by Bandlab basically is the "improved" sonar platinum. It has all features and another new stuff, but not big changes, just some little stuffs and bug fixes.
if we already have cakewalk in stalled are we going to still be able to use it ( i know no more updates or bug fixes). i dont mind that, but if it "stops working" then ill have to find a alternative of course. what about the bandlab app? i have a few collaborations going on in there, hate to lose that or the ability to share songs that way
Yes. If you’ve already downloaded Cakewalk then you can continue using it for free for as long as it works on your computer. So maybe do the latest updates while you can.
As for Bandlab and the app, I think that will be business as usual. They haven’t said that there will be any changes with it. Bandlab will likely remain as the free option but with optional memberships/subscriptions to give you some bonuses.
How will this affect projects I've already started?
You can continue to use the existing version for free and continue working on those projects. They will no longer provide updates to the program though. If you decide to upgrade to the new Cakewalk Sonar, you will be able to open your existing Cakewalk by Bandlab projects in the new version.
They said this would not happen in 2018 when they purchased the software from the court and set it free, now they think they can go the way of Datto and renege on an apparent promise as I understand it, what Datto did was say they would keep a software product fee then decided to turn around and charge for the same product. Bandlab may just repeat history and suffer the same fate
Love sonar, been using it from way back when it was called pro audio 9.
I won't have a problem paying a one- time license. But this monthly rent
Subscription thing. Nah, time to migrate.
I think/hope that the new Sonar will have a one time perpetual license option. I wonder if it will come with lifetime updates like FL Studio. That would be nice.
I will definetly be backing up my installation files for the free Cakewalk, That way I will always have the free version with me If this new cakewalk doesn't make sense for me
I am doing the same
Can you explain how to do that? I have the free cakewalk on one of my laptops.
The problem will be licensing, that works online only unfortunately.
BOOM!
💥
from what I have seen and read Cakewalk will still be a usable DAW, But not supported.
i would prefer the Sonar versions but it depends if its one off payment, if not then I'll look at Cubase 12..
Yes the existing Cakewalk by Bandlab will still be usable if you get it before the change happens. They wont be updating that version anymore.
Will the free cakewalk continue to work and run on my computer after the new cakewalk next and sonar come out? Just wanted to know since iv already downloaded the free cakewalk
Yes. If you already have it, you can continue to use it for as long as it will work. There won’t be any updates for it though.
@@AudioTechTV okay cool thanks :)
Sonar is not for Mac, so what is the advantage
Looks like I will not be upgrading my version of CAKEWALK and will only use it on my offline PC I am already happy with my old version of cakewalk
Why replace or upgrade if it works?
I've been using Cakwalk since early 90's, last purchase was Sonar Pro only to get enough recording tracks and the ProChannel Console Strip, rest that is included isn't installed, and only went Bandlab since it added some bugfixes to the existing code.
Think I update it with the incomming last fix and just stick to it.
As I understand it, there will be a subscription based model, so in case there is no purchase option available and I really need to update I just go for something more simple and faster, which most probably will be a Reaper license, seems to be one of the stable DAW's out there without to much stuff included.
Most DAW's are kinda overkill for my use anyway, I just need plenty of tracks and busses, VST3 support for external plugins and VI midi support so I can use the 2 virtual instruments I got a license for, iZotope's Iris Synth and SD3 for when I need a quick drum track.
Video support, loads of included plugins, included virtual instruments and what else they manage to stuff in I really don't need in my DAW, for video editing I prefer Sony Vegas and DaVinci Resolve anyway.
Thanks for the update. Personally, depending on the price point decisions, I don't have a problem with this and was expecting something to happen, given the undeniable viability of Cakewalk in a paid for market. I don't have a problem with the workflow issue but my main gripe has always been the compatibility of hardware with CWBBL and the lack of support for it. Perhaps now we can look forward to installing hardware in a plug and play state and not spend literally days messing around with drivers and Mackie controls 😅
I understand that some people will be unhappy but the quality and unrestricted usability of CW couldn't carry on as a free product.
I guess now it's all down to price 💰
BTW, as an actual DAW, Sonar was one of the most underrated to ever exist. Seriously.
The main issue with it was stability which Cakewalk never got quite right, but the actual DAW was great.
I am just so happy I still have a Sonar X2 in my cakewalk account, so I'll be able to use my Sonitus FX with the new Sonar lol.
I love those things, even 20 years later.
CWBBL requires online activation for initial install. SO I wonder if one can move to a new comp and still get it activated? if not, that is irritating.
According to BandLab, the six months deactivation mechanism will be removed after the last bug fix update of "CakeWalk by BandLab" is releases.
In other words, it will be activated permanently.
@@user-mf3hk2gt3h Ok. thank you for the help.
Subscription will kill this daw, even if it was cheap it will still add up being more expensive than say
a one time purchase of Ableton, Fl studio etc
Reaper costs 60 bucks and more stable and lightweight than sonar. You can still use cakewalk until your vsts stop working than change your projects to another DAW.
I might agree to pay a one-time fee but subscriptions are usually not the way to go. If the subscription price is more than $5 per month I will be looking for an alternative. If like me, you plan to use the program for years to come those monthly fees rack up. When you can obtain a free DAW with the purchase of so many hardware items it just doesn't make sense to spend a lot of money.
I'll pay for it it's great. It's my favourite daw by far.
Why do I get the feeling this was their plan all along to entice people in. Anyway, I'll only go with Sonar if it's cheap and non subscription. Otherwise, I'll go with a DAW with better workflow and a one time payment. Cheers!
Great video Zane ' as always
Alright, time to get Ableton
So to make it clear, will i be able to continue to use the current Cakewalk forever?
What is the meaning of "No longer supported"?
Will there just be no more upgrades and update, or will it expire on my PC and no longer usable, even if my PC is not connected to internet?
If you have the current Cakewalk downloaded and installed already then you will be able to continue to use it for as long as like.
No longer supported means that this version will no longer be updated. There’s no expiry for the current version. It doesn’t matter if your computer is connected or not, you will still be able to use what you already have.
New users will no longer be able to download the free version but current users that have it already will not be affected at all unless you need something in an update.
@@AudioTechTV Thank you very much for clarifying this!
i meet this free daw but no loger free ? 😢i need choose a another daw
You can still get it for free right now. If you get it now, while it’s still free, then you can continue to use it for free.
Or give Tracktion Waveform Free a try.
Any update
No real update yet. I got to check out Cakewall Next Beta in this video ua-cam.com/video/mppA8gX6LBM/v-deo.html
But no word on pricing or Sonar yet.
What if you had paid for Sonar x3, can it still be for free?
Well, my pedalboard came with a LE version of sonar X3. Thankfully i have the installer and my license+registration code. I still can install and using it because the installer is completely offline, unlike the Cakewalk by Bandlab version.
Glad I dropped the $60 and switched to Reaper
This was to be expected, I guess I will continue to use it until it gets outdated and then switch to Reaper.
Honestly, If they are adding prices to these new products, I think they should not exaggerate like other DAWs by putting the price tag above the average consumer. Let’s be clear, there are many people in this world who can’t afford such a price to make music. I believe everyone should have the opportunity to start music production and have a wide variety of features like cakewalk to explore without having to pay so much. In my opinion, they should have the same price range as Reaper, that’s why that DAW is still around after so much time!
I purchased Sonar by Cakewalk from versions 4 through 12 Pro, and while not trained to take advantage of all the features through each version, it was adequate for what I wanted to accomplish. When Cakewalk by Bandlab came along, I latched onto it immediately and ditched 12 Pro. Now that there is going to be a price associated with C by B, I will not be "upgrading." Instead, I will use the current version of C by B until it no longer exists as the free option, and once that option goes away, I'll just reinstall 12 Pro. I just don't use subscription models of software for anything.
I'm exactly the same as you! I'd only just upgraded my X3 Platinum when they pulled the support. Mat as well go back to what I've already paid for!!
I don't get involved with renting my software. Thanks Adobe for kicking that off, I think they were one of the first.
Reaper seems to get a lot of praise, might look at that.
I'm early days with DAWs and Cakewalk seems a bit overcomplex
Will see what the prices are, may consider a one off purchase is reasonabe.
Agreed
What if I downloaded it when it was free?
You can continue using it but they will no longer provide updates after the other two products are released
Hmm that's too bad. I understand completely that they need to make a profit off it but honestly the reason I've used Cakewalk is because I needed a daw I could use vst's on and couldn't afford pro tools, etc. at the time. If it's not free I'll prolly move on to one with a better workflow even if I'm somewhat used to Cakewalk by now.
I'm going to use Sonar unless it becomes subsucription
Switching to Cubase makes sense now.
They should reinstate Sonar Platinum and modernize the GUI so we can have better UX. More importantly, I think every music product should now be cross platform now.
I don't want the demo version to have only 8 tracks supported or to disable saving projects made in Cakewalk Next 😢
Will they support WAVES servers? My needs are simple. Had Cakewalk from early on. Straight forward. Descent support while free. Need to see how this pans out.
If you mean the Waves Soundgrid Servers, The existing Cakewalk can use them so it shouldn’t be a problem in the new Cakewalk Sonar.
I haven’t use Soundgrid in Cakewalk but I’ve seen other people use it. I don’t know about Studio Rack specifically. It may not work with Soundgrid as Studio Rack supports other brands plugins.
Cakewalk was my first daw, this was a daw that i loved, never hated how 'analogy' it looked, i actually loved that, my poor ass wont be able to pay a single cent, every plugin i own is basically an alternate free version of something, i am just a bit sad that cakewalk is losing support, and a bit disappointed because the only thing i didnt really liked about cakewalk was its at times, clunky workflow and thats exactly what they arent changing and now its not free.
It's like they are charging us for reskin of a free version with the free one losing support but oh well i do understand why. They have families, bills to pay and cakewalk was phenomenal. Easy could've been a paid daw and after sometimes, it will be.
You could make a song out of that opening line of yours !! ... "Cakewalk was my First DAW" ... #Challenge :)
@@Stephanie3XL This will be so weird in context of metal music 😂
I hope they don't change a thing on the new Sonar version. It is perfect.
Event if they change it, you can still use the old and free version.
My biggest gripe with Bandlab is that it doesn't have as many "sounds" built in without the aggravation of having to download so many vst plugins. Even then, I'm not able to come close to the sounds I had before. I was away from DAW work for a long time so BL was like starting over again. The previous DAW I used was Cakewalk Home Studio 2004XL to give you a point of reference as to how long I've been away. In 2004XL, they had a massive bank of midi sounds I could use - and I created many songs with it alone. Hopefully, one of these new ones will contain that massive bank of sounds again. Here's an example of a song (actually 8 shorter songs seamed together) that were created completely with the midi sounds within 2004XL - aside from the cymbals which I added. None of these sounds are in BL by default. It's called Storm Suite. ua-cam.com/video/v0FCTWwT5zU/v-deo.html
Will the free version I have still work?
Yes the version that you already have will continue to work but there will no longer be updates available for it. So if you’re happy with the current version then you have nothing to worry about. Just don’t remove it from your computer.
@@AudioTechTVsince the old cakewalk by bandlab is free, can i get it on other sites too?
@@jirehla-ab1671 if some other site hosts it illegally and provides a way to register it then yes you will be able to. If you’re comfortable with installing stuff from these kinds of websites then I’m sure you can find a lot of other premium software for free too.
Better not making it cloud based, cloud is slow n doesn't support ASIO tool for interface, we've been requesting pc app with kinda same design as bandlab, I'm glad we getting it 🔥
Seems that most of the commenters are saying Cakewalk would need to improve before they're willing to buy it and get up to the level of its rivals. I'm not entirely sure what aspects of Cakewalk they're referring to but it's an interesting conversation. I use Ableton and Cakewalk and while I think Ableton is better at some things, Cakewalk is better at other things.
Ableton Live’s workflow is a bit quicker at certain things but in my opinion Cakewalk is a better program. Ableton Alice just recently got comp recording. Cakewalk has had that for years.
I think people would like Cakewalk to become more compatible with modern hardware like Midi controllers and not have to rely on workarounds.
And the workflow could be a little more streamlined. But it definitely has excellent features already and just needs a little modernizing.
Thank you for watching. Keep creating! 👊👍
@@AudioTechTV Yeah and the comping in Ableton Live 11 isn't even as good as in Cakewalk. I agree with you concerning aspects of Cakewalk's workflow. It's not any big major things but a bunch of little improvements they can make.
If I have to pay for it....they better at least have a matrix view that is just as good or better than Abletons loop style and adding live looping abilities.
This I even had as a forum post for cakewalk by bandlab but now....seeing they are gonna get rid of it now....
There's no point now. 😢
When they bought sonar, they not only bought the rights to the software, they also bought the obligations assumed with consumers. one cannot be separated from the other. otherwise it would be very easy to break the word given
They actually did not ! I bought a Sonar Platinum lifetime license, then Gibson sold it. Of course I won't get any license for BandLab's new product, and it definitely sucks.
I think cakewalk should do what waveform does, continue to offer the free version and offer a paid version with more advanced features.
I am hoping that they will do something like that but their announcement didn’t make it sound like there was going to be a free version.
@@AudioTechTV yeah I agree, sounds like it's paid only, which is a shame. I'm probably going to abandon the software after that and switch to waveform or reaper.
"will be offered at price points designed to meet the needs of different customers"
As if there's a single customer out there who's like "Nah, it's free, and that's why I don't want it."
I hate it when companies try to spin raised prices like this.
I mean, if you can use VSTs, then it must be a desktop software.
Also it crashes regularly so if they charge for it, would that stop???
Pro Fools crashes regularly too and yet they sure do bend you over and stick it to you ....
Typical comment from ignorant people who just regurgitate internet hearsay from the X1 days 13 years ago.
I've already moved to Studio One which IMO is Cakewalk on steroids 😅. Its way more user-friendly and I've joined Sphere which for me is worth it.
I’ve used Ableton Live for 5 years and it really is fast and easy for creating but weak for scoring to video. I looked for a second DAW and considered Cakewalk but it looked too good to be true and I was proven right. Instead, I went for it and got Studio One Pro. Wow, blown away! Really like it but still getting my head around routing etc. I used Cubase for years before Live so thought of playing safe but I don’t regret Studio One at all. Brilliant concept.
I used to use Cakewalk before you educated us on Traktion
Once you get used to Tracktion’s workflow it’s hard to go back to Cakewalk. But if they end up modernizing the workflow of Cakewalk it could be a very competitive DAW with some of the big names.
@@AudioTechTV we appreciate you bro . Thank you for everything you do
if it was one buy for life time of updates then i would buy, if not i really might just buy fl studio
its fine to me if you already own cbb before getting discontinued, you're still allowed to use cakewalk by bandlab legally even new paid one released
but it would be shit if they restrict like using outdated free version as 'non-commercial only' or something but thank god it will never happen
i personally main lmms but it cant export midi with patches and vst3 usage is complicated(needs vst plugin called element) so i have cbb as sub daw(if i was adult and able to pay something online then i might have chance to buy reaper but i can't now so)
ngl imo foss softwares like lmms, audacity are kinda overhated/threated badly in mainstream communities
its true that they're weak and doesn't have much features compared to paid softwares but they're keep improving by contributors and can be forked if project is dead, also its very useful for poor people or teenagers who can 't pay online like me
another thing i like about most foss software are sizes, most commercial softwares take like 5gb or more while foss softwares are usally under 2gb(but theres heavier foss software like gimp and lighter commercial softwares like reaper)
So they're making waves , so to speak
Cheers !
I’m just speculating on the subscription thing. So maybe they won’t go that route. Hopefully they have seen that people don’t want them or at least give people the option to have another option.
That's pretty disappointing for me, I've barely got to use Cakewalk and it seems like a good daw
You’ll be able to continue using it as is but with no new updates once the other two are released.
Oh no.... I've grown with Cakewalk. Not going to be able to afford to pay for it. Oh well time to switch maybe 😢
You’ll still be able to use Cakewalk by Bandlab once they release the other two but they will no longer update it and anyone that didn’t get it before, will no longer be able to access it. So if you’re using it fine now, you should be good with the existing version for a few years at least.
@@AudioTechTV yeah boiiiiiiii..... thanks for cheering me up as always. Love the channel
Hate subscriptions. It's like a slow water faucet drip. Before you know its more money than you wanted to spend and you forget about it.
Ya, my poor disables ass can't do subscriptions beyond the UA-cam and Netflix family plans so I might have to learn Reaper. I wonder how much money Caldecott Music Industries lost when they bought Reverbnation? Also, it doesn't look like the NME publications acquisition didn't pay off as well as they had hoped as they are dumping portions of it. It still feels like a bit of a bait and switch
I think the subscription would have to be very small to have it make sense for anyone as you can get subscriptions for Pro Tools, Studio One and Reason already. Plus Ableton Live has a rent to own option. Lots of competition for them and with a very dated workflow, they will really only be getting the people that absolutely refuse to learn another DAW.
Typical, reel em in before charging. I've been a fan of Cakewalk since 2001 but luckily there are brilliant free alternatives these days. Personally I've been running Reaper free for the last 2yrs and it's awesome
can't you just keep your current version and not update it?
Yes. If you currently have Cakewalk by Bandlab then you can continue to use it after they make these changes. There will be no more updates for it though. Which isn't that big of a deal if you are currently happy with it. But after the release of the new programs the free version will no longer be available to new users. So if you got it now, you'll be good to go for as long as you want to use Cakewalk by Bandlab.
Yeah, I mean, Studio One, Logic and Reaper are beloved nowadays by their users. They've got some mountain to climb.
The biggest red flag for me is how they entered the forums with only one of those bog standard flowery language statements about company vision and blah blah, which for me only indicate they will pull the rug from under us at some point and are trying to convince us it's not gonna hurt when it happens. And this is concerning especially when none of the people involved in the project seems to give a straight answer when asked about pricing.
I absolutely despise subscription software and all that that implies ;)
ok
I just downloaded Cakewalk today. It's still free so far.
I think they canceled after bad pr? Idk.
Nvm :(
If it is subscription I am done with Cakewalk
If it's subscription only, then I will go to studio one.
Cakewalk by Bandlab is too good to stay free forever. I kind of expected this from Bandlab.
I expected it to happen a lot sooner. If they do some significant updates on it then it could be one of the top DAWs available right now. Thank you for watching. Keep creating! 👊👍
guess they'll lose a lot of their user base from the free version then...
