I’m in the USA and I’ve always been jealous of the cool vehicles they get oversees like the LC70, Hilux, Prado, DMax and more, but I’m slowly coming to the realization that the USA has some excellent overland vehicle choices with our full size truck selections. I’m thinking that a 3/4 ton with an off-road camper trailer is going to be the ticket for my family of 4 in a few years to tour the USA and Canada. Full-size trucks are very common in the USA, they have great support and maintenance networks, tons of factory options, lots of room, high payload capacities and high towing capacities.
The Diesel engine adds a lot of weight over the front axle. If I was building an HD truck for over landing I’d put the winch behind the rear bumper to help balance the weight. Especially if you are adding the spare to the back bumper. That leaves plenty of room for a winch, air compressor, and air tank in that space under the bed and behind the rear axle.
We love the Ram platform. We're on our second build with our half ton.

Couldn’t agree more!
the dual solid axles these things have is so awesome
Nice build, simple, clean, purposeful.

I remember getting a sticker from you guys when I was starting out. Still have it.
Looking forward to part 2…any issues with underbody clearance. I ran into an “issue” with the 2500’s giant rear differential!
Awesome lookin truck!
Hey! Much better now that those silly chrome wheels are gone!
Looks like a pretty nice setup. Did you say you don't have cruise control or just that it's not a "smart" cruise?
I can't wait to see the next part/s!
@mattschwartz would u go diesel on your previous ram/fwc build if u could do it again? And 2500vs 3500? Thanks @expeditionportal
Now with cost of fuel it might as well be a trailer home.
Couldn't a 5.7L Hemi half ton accomplished the same mission as your 3/4 ton Cummins?
It's so much nicer towing with a diesel. There is no comparison
