Yep, there are many ways to set the timing. The method you described is also used among Jawa and ČZ owners. We showed the most oldschool way to do it.

3.5mm to 4mm. I think 3.8mm timing Is the best seting. The engine with 3.8mm timing run smooth, and have enough power in all over the RPMs spectrum.
