My french teacher would always allowed us to choose between French and German subtitles. We chose German every time because we all hated French and just wanted to enjoy the movie. Looking back at it now, this was really dumb.

Another tip is to practice this method with movies or series you enjoy the most, especially those you've already known all dialogs in your native language.

I re-watched the Japanese sumo wrestling Netflix show, 'Sanctuary' with Japanese subtitles, and found it very easy to watch - but that was because I had seen it already, and there's a lot of physical acting. Apart from that, I'm still watching anime with English subtitles, but I've trained myself to listen to the dialogue while reading the subs. I also rip the audio from some episodes (which I've already seen) and put them on my mp3 player, and listen to them if I'm travelling.

Thanks for sharing your tips, Gary. I agree that watching a movie first in your native language can help, then watching it later again but with same language subtitles. Do you also remove all of the non-speaking parts and background music of the movie when you get the audio, or do you listen to the whole thing with audio?
