Glass and pastel is always a doubled edge sword. On one hand, glass is less likely to lift the pastel from the painting because of static electricity like Plexiglas. On the other, it has the highest risk of breaking and slicing the paper drawing. Museum conservators typically decided based on the pastel painting. If the piece is heavily fixed (i.e., has lots of fixative) they will use plastic under the assumption it will kept in a controlled temperature and humidity climate.
My pastel paintings are conserved by using deep frames to keep the Plexiglas as far from the pastel as reasonable to avoid any static removal of the pastel ( I live in a dry climate). The depth of the frame from the painting is anywhere from 3/4" - 20 mm to 1.5" - 40 mm - depending on size of painting. This always requires custom framing and occasionally wipe the frames with dryer towels to help mitigate static. So far, after 30 plus years... none of our pastels have suffered any issues, but a few would have been destroyed in a move had it had been framed with glass instead of plastic. We learned the hard way about how glass can slice paper art very easily if they are dropped or fall.

I've matted and framed many of my pastel portraits and didnt add foam. I just now looked to see if any pastel dust has fallen from them...nope! They have been framed over 3 yrs. I guess it's truly up to the person doing the framing. :))

Is it necessary to have the extra foam? Won't the space between the pastel and the glass be enough with using only the mat?

The extra space is for the pastel dust to fall into, instead of falling onto the matting.

Thanks so much for informative demonstration. I didn't quite get the name/blend of the tape you used?

Lis van der Geer I use artist tape, which it won’t peel off the paper.
