February 2022,.......Many thanks! I'm in Columbus, Ohio and my one buddy living down south of Athens Ohio, salvaged a pre-Civil War (power plant) portable steam engine. It was very tall, was mostly intact, but wasn't working. It sat on 4 very large spoked, iron wheels. It was sunk deep in a bog on a farmer's property, and the guy gave it to my friend, just for removing it. My friend researched it,,...and based on its design, determined it was pre-Civil war. My friend had established a reputation for salvaging old farm equipment, restoring them and using them at his property. All the machines he'd gotten free, because the property owners, wanted them removed. So he had winches, brute strength, various derrick like machines he'd construct, as needed on site, and would pull the old machines out of the peat bogs. He has a very early Case bulldozer. Like a 1900s era, & it was identified by the Case company, as one of their earliest dozers. Again it was dragged out of a peat bog,....my buddy said the grease was still in the joints and fittings. It was a hand cranked model. After a basic power washing, adding fresh fuel, and tinkering with it,...it started right up. He used it for 25 years on his own property. He found it in the 1970s. He also found a portable saw mill, from the 1920s, that he restored and used. It was mounted on steel skids, and could be powered by a PTO gear/pulley mechanism from a tractor. With large leather belts. My buddy retro-fitted it to work with a 1940s (war) Jeep. Rigged up some pulleys, to interact with the Jeep's PTO.
