This style compressor is know as an integral compressor, being that it is a one piece engine and compressor. The end with the exhaust is the power head, and the other end is the compressor end. Both ends are connected at the crank. Similar style compressors are still in use, such as cooper-Bessemer GMV and, more similar to this cooper, ajax compressors
