- The best food plot for deer is a food plot they actually eat and one that provides great nutrition at the same time. There are a lot of factors that play into deer feeding habits and preferences but if a hunter can figure out what food plots work best for their area then the reward can be huge.
Planting food plots for deer can be fun, rewarding, and expensive. Learning some tips and tricks for different seasons and varieties of seed can help reduce the risk of failure and maximize your hunting success. In this video, I share evidence of my favorite annual clover, arrowleaf clover, that attracts deer like crazy. I have learned over the years that arrowleaf clover is by far my deer's favorite springtime food. On any given afternoon in the spring you can find as many as 10 deer grazing on my arrowleaf clover plot! All of their heads are down and all of them are feasting! That is what hunters want to see!
I believe, based on my experience, that the best clover for deer in my area is arrowleaf clover. I specifically use Apache Arrowleaf Clover as it is an improved variety over Yucchi (another good brand) in regards to disease resistance. It also comes pre-coated with inoculant and fungicide which makes it very convenient at planting time.
Stick around until the end of the video for some tips and tricks to planting arrowleaf clover in your fall mix. I have learned a lot over the years and have made some mistakes that can help other hunters avoid. If you are able to get a good stand of arrowleaf clover you will come to find out that this just might be the best food plot for deer...ever! Shhh...don't tell the hunt club next to you! They will wonder what happened to all their deer.

I'm a simple man. I see a new Handy Hunter video, I watch it.
Glad you are on board! Thanks for watching!
Deer slamming it in the hot summer. It’s gotta be good!
Right?! And all through the spring when there’s a million other forbes and blooms to eat...they live in that arrowleaf patch instead.
Great video, great insight. Keep it up!
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
I remember a video a while back that you did on the arrow leaf clover. 2-3 ft tall and deer were still browsing on it. I tried about 5lbs worth but didn’t do that well. I was unaware that it needed to be inoculated. Now I know. I’ll give it another try. Thanks and keep the videos coming
You are welcome! It may take a little trial and error but once you get it going your deer will love it! They eat this stuff like crazy from the time it’s short till deep summer when it’s dead. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
Great video as always. I love arrowleaf. I have worked out a blend I really love that is almost all clovers, and they are "annuals" but reseed heavy. I have crimson clover, Apache, Mihi Persian if the soil is good for it, and Hairy Vetch. I am also adding white crimson clover to it this year. I always plant oats as well. I will also get a small bag of subterranean clover for under trees.
Sounds like an awesome mix! Great suggestion on the sub clover under trees. I need to try that. Good luck this season!
New friend here. Your father in law sent me over. He said we have a lot in common. Looks like we sure do. 👍
Awesome! Glad you stopped by! Keep in touch 👍
Great video! Do you lightly disc the following fall to re-plant that arrowleaf seed bank? Or just bush-hog and wait on the rain to give it good seed-to-soil contact?
I always disc as normal and thrown in my fall mix. The arrowleaf comes back up in the spring from the seedbank. You might get a little better stand if you throw your winter mix, like oats, on top and then lightly scratch the surface vs heavy tilling like i do. Either way you will get a good stand from the seedbank. Good luck and let me know how it works out.
You should post more. Specify your southern region in your handle. Your tips and ideas are very original and interesting. So many southerners are dying for information and almost all of it pertains to the Midwest and ag land.
Thank you! Appreciate the feedback!
Going to give it a go Apache arrowleaf
I planted a ton more in all my fall plots. Can’t wait to get back to the farm and see it exploding! You will love it!
Great video what county do you hunt in and do you own all that land
We’re in Dooly and yep we own it all. Very blessed!
Have you tried the arrow leaf with cereal rye? Or have you found oats to be better?
I’ve had cereal rye in mixes before with good success but in the end I prefer oats...because I’ve seen the deer just hammer it. You can do arrowleaf with either one just don’t overplant the grain. Good luck and keep in touch!
@HandyHunter. Hi HH, I just planted yesterday feed oats from TS just as you did in the past. What's your best guess on germination rates? 60% ?
At least 80%. Just had a subscriber test the germination rate the other day and he got 80%.
@@TheHandyHunter Nice! Thanks for the quick response. Oats and brassicas (from seed world USA (I live in Tampa)) were planted outside Tallahassee. Thanks again. Great channel. Have a good hunting season!
You too! LOL..i was just at seedworld a couple days ago. Good luck on getting the big one!
I wonder if this would grow good in Central Louisiana
I don’t see why it wouldn’t. We are in central Georgia so very similar weather. They love it!
@@TheHandyHunter Thank you sir and great video keep them coming
@@TheHandyHunter do you know if it will grow in the north if spring planted ? Central Minnesota...
I’m not sure. I would check with some of the local hunters or farmers up that way to gain their thoughts or experience. Wish I could help. Good luck!
What are you planting as your fall crop
I’m planting TS Oats and Apache arrowleaf in all my plots with a little cowpeas mixed in around my bow stands. Good luck!!
@@TheHandyHunter im doing buckwheat this year how do you think it will do in sandy soil is oats good for sandy soil as well i might mix it up
@Ojibwa62 x thank you
Good advice guys! I think you’ll be fine with oats in sandy soil but, like everything else, depends on the rain! Good luck guys and shoot me some pics of those plots...love to see them!
Do turkeys like it?
They love it!
Hey guys remember me? How's preston doing
Yes we do! How have you been? Preston is doing awesome. Growing like a weed and now taller than me! Keep in touch!
One thing I do to bulk up my small seed like clover is use a bag of chick starter or game bird starter granuals it works really well and you don't have to worry about the fertilizer sweating and making things sticky. The only thing thanks to the bidens & democrats feed has doubled now too so it's not as cheap as it used to be. But seed is so expensive you might as well give it the best chance possible.
That's a great idea!
