  • Picture an art critic, and you probably think of Jerry Saltz: Pulitzer Prize-winning writer on the importance of art in our cultural lives. At the top of his field, Saltz has a knack for making contemporary art cool and accessible in a way few critics have before. In a conversation with Michael Darling, Saltz looks at how visionary artists have documented and challenged our culture, our times, and our lives.

As the last art critic left who can stand the suffocating smell of hydrogen sufide filling the room after the rest of the major critics left the field in disgust, Jerry Saltz is deservedly now the public face of everything wrong with the fine art field. The wealth gap is a fatal disease for a civilization if left untreated, and the contemporary art industry is one of its most conspicuous rash symptoms. If you are Human and breathing, you are paying for contemporary art as an unwilling stakeholder by receiving its negative dividends; higher prices, taxes, inequality and environmental degradation.

The mindless pursuit of wealth is the death of art.

this guy is great but within a few minutes of saying England wasn't on the art map until BritArt (early90s) he mentions FRANCIS BACON as an example of a art Great...Bacon was from England in the 1960s. Just sayin.

I am a man. I paint women. It is okay to tear my works apart with ravenous teeth. Why? Because I can never know. And that's okay. Ignorance is a pathway to discourse. I ask in oil/acrylic, you answer in personal truth. Is that not beauty incarnate? Conversation is the wonder of art.

Great talk! Art with a political agenda is a form of propaganda.

Everything is propaganda then ,since there’s not art that isn’t political
