We're the creators, all of us. We, each of us, has the ability and freedom to create. However we want. If someone feels to think, feel, or say something about it, it comes from their perspective, their expertise, their background, agenda, karma, and motive. We can not let that stop us. Art is changing from being a luxury for a few elite people, to being a way of creating joy for ourselves. Same with singing. It used to be for others, and we were being judged. But our voice is inside OUR bodies. So clearly it is for us. It's actually a healing instrument. Use it. Same with our ability to create, whether we call it art or whatever. Thank you Nick for teaching what and how you do.
OMG, there were so many profound statements and ideas spoken by Jerry. There are so many quotes I want to write down and go back to over and over.......... You are right, Nick, this is a PHENOMENAL podcast!!!!!!!
Excellent! I'd never heard of Jerry Saltz until now... he's wonderful, funny, smart, humble, and real. I found some of his early art work and love it, and will be looking for his writings as well. Thank you!
Very creative both of you. I wonder what his birthday is? He sounds like an Aquarius! You must go through a lot of hell in life to pull your creativity side out. I love making art, I grow succulents, train dogs, raise four boys and at 55 years old found out I loved crayons 🤣 …… I love paint, pins, markers, tape, paper, oil, water, ink. Oh my gosh I love it. I’m a product hoarder. I want to try it all. I’m 60 years old now I haven’t made enough art to even speak to you two. But I can care less what someone thinks of my art this week. I absolutely love making art, I’m learning what it takes to make me happy in my crayons. I don’t have 24-7 to play but my life revolves around the hours I get to go into my studio, quiet in my space and make my art. I didn’t know I could go a week without sleep. I can! Just to make art. I don’t go out because I want to make art, I don’t want to sell my art I want to make my art. I want to stack it up! I also don’t follow rules, it’s my art I have no rules. I love this guy, I’ll buy his book today. I love you both. I didn’t need permission of course to make MY art but this keeps me excited to follow my ideas, I was going to anyways, but I’m not a big baby. I can play in my crayons if I want to. So I’m a little strange, god made me his way! He has never made a mistake, I’m what he wanted. I’ll give what I have. And I’ll make my art! Love you both. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻❤️🙏
February 2020 was my first gallery show and the world shut down in March. I continued painting throughout Covid. I just finished Nicks free week and joined the Studio. I’m excited to learn from everyone.
Having never heard of Jerry Saltz before, I am now a complete fan and have purchased both the books mentioned in this podcast. Just finished How To Be an Artist. And one of the things that impressed me so very much about Satlz is that he never once corrected Nick when misquoting the title. Nick kept saying “How To Become an Artist” - and since Jerry’s art is his writing I just know it made him cringe inside to hear his title misquoted :) All Jerry did was repeat the title correctly within his answer to Nick’s question. The book is written to artists. His audience is a group who already know their inner beings are creative makers, but also know it’s an incredibly difficult life. Jerry Saltz wrote a book to encourage and coach those artists. The title describes it perfectly. How to BE an artist is a book I’m going to give to a bunch of artists in my family for Christmas. Thanks to Nick for this interview which was very well done, even with the misquote. And thanks to Jerry for being his full self for our benefit.
Wow did I need to hear all of this today......thank you so much for this interview...love him what a gem. I'll be buying the book you discussed that he wrote. thanks
I listened to this the first time around, and was happy for the reminder to listen again. So many wonderful nuggets to enjoy and be encouraged by. I especially appreciate the push to hang tight and claim my spot in the great community of artists. I have a renewed gratitude right now for being part of it!
I propagate succulents. My husband begs me to stop. I’ve filled several 1000 feet of succulents plants. I agree the easiest to propagate. I do give them away at every Holiday and every time someone comes out to visit. It’s kinda a law, if you come out to my house you will take plants home 😂 good luck at the show.
Thanks for re-posting this! I saw the original video and bought his new book straight away, as I had loved the previous one. He is quite a character...and has a lot of great stuff to say!
Thank you so much for this video! I loved listening to you and Jerry. I enjoy creative quirky people with points of view that make me think. I will definitely order Jerry Saltz’s book.
Funny and very sad. Watching his ego swing from arrogance to self deprecation in one sentence is wild. His heart still needs healing for sure. Wish he would let go and work with you Nick!
Did anyone notice the video was cut out between 31:53 and 31:56 when Jerry tried to refer to the contested election of 2016. 2016 was cut out and left blank. Who did this? UA-cam, Art 2 Life? Concerning. Otherwise I am loving the interview.
If you build it they will come. Amen! Get out of your head and onto your paper. Screw what your head tells you. Do what your hand and heart and let your eyes guide you. Do you think it’s pretty, ITS Pretty!
Fascinating interview. What an intelligent, funny, self-deprecating soul. Must take an opposing view regarding Sean Scully. I love his mystical, mesmerizing striped paintings. Don't agree with Jerry's critical view of this artist's work.

Can’t wait to watch this! Right now though I’m on the way to give a tour at The New York Botanical Garden! 😊☀️A work of art of its own!🌸

Loved it then and now.. thanks for the replay ✨
I would love to see a movie made about Jerry. What an incredible life he’s had.

Buying his book now! Fabulous episode!👍👍👍👍

LOVE THIS IN SO MANY MANY WAYS!!!!!
Love Jerry Saltz' point of view! Been following him for years. Now, Get to work!
I fell asleep and yt gloriously served this up on my headphones-perfect pep talk for my subconscious 🤪
Funny and very sad. Watching his ego swing from arrogance to self deprecation in one sentence is wild. His heart still needs healing for sure. Wish he would let go and work with you Nick!
Fabulous …. So many truths.
Thank you Jerry for giving to us head on😅
Love this sent to friends
I look for these videos daily

There is no video cut at that timestamp. Jerry said and meant 2000, not 2016. Hope this helps!

FINISH THE DAMN THING. I need to write this in my studio. I’m so good at procrastination and not finishing ‘projects’…
Jerry Saltz ‘liked’ one of my paintings I posted on Instagram and it was thrilling! Have no idea how he found me - must’ve been “doom scolling”!☺️
So cool!
Not impressed by the Grand Canyon, yet fascinated by Picasso 😢
There are no others like me to commune with...lifelong belief. Lol
What is this guy's name I only have my phone so I can't see anything
Jerry Saltz

Failed artist writes book on how to be an artist.
Crapaction! Don’t take the name abstraction, name it yourself.
