I wish they'd tought reverse perpendicular parking in Massachusetts. I did teach myself how to do it after I got my license. And my first car at the time did not have a backup camera but it was small SUV it was easy to tell where the back end was.
I am at a loss for words for how thankful I am to have found your channel. I've been watching and studying your videos for the last two weeks and learned enough to feel safe, confident and in control behind the wheel of my first car. In fact I actually just passed my driver's license test this morning, went straight for it without ever having a permit or anything, because I learned how to practice effectively from your videos. I couldn't have done it without you. I just wanted you to know you're really doing a great public service and you're easy to understand videos are truly helping make the road a safer place.

hey i just want to say that the to-the-point repetition of information has been really effective in teaching me these things that my adhd brain finds "boring". most often teachers just heavily emphasize important information One time, and expect you to retain it as they continue on with more information. repetition in practice > slow heavy emphasis. thank you for all of your videos. it's rare that i find i'm actually learning, so this is cool to me.

Hey Rick, I Am Located In Gainesville FL & August 3rd I am Going for my road test at an tax collectors office which will have modified testing in a parking lot without the examiner inside of the vehicle . I’d really love practice on The steps I would have to take are : 1) QUICK STOP 2) BACKING SLOW SPEED 3) 3POINT TURN 4) STRAIGHT IN PARKING PARKING ON A GRADE
That was good but watch out while scanning in the middle of the intersection my comment on that is before entering into the intersection scan the area and after that when there was no one on the road just drive and reach on the other side of the road not to block it and not to put urself in danger
I am finding yr videos very helpful. I am giving my road test again and I hope I pass this time. I scored good but the downfall was the reverse parking which I did perfect once the 2nd time I looked at the camera and mirrors more. Also she told me I had to turn all my body for the 360 turn eg left side right side. Hummm
HINT: ALWAYS - "Before" actually backing up, give your horn a short tap to beep the horn to let those know surrounding your vehicle that your now going to back up...the horn alerts others nearby rather than silently just backing up.
That is a required technique for commercial licenses - truck and buses. My only concern in a parking lot would be scaring pedestrians and children. Otherwise, yes. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Rick. Question for you. At what point do you straighten out your steering wheel? Is it when you are almost finished backing up or when you are stopped and switching from reverse to drive?
Hi Emily Stewardson - Thank you for your comment and query. Straighten when you're almost finished backing up to avoid "dry steering." Dry steering is when you turn the steering wheels when you're stopped. It was more of a problem in the ole' days of lesser quality tires, but now with better tires, it's not so much of a problem. But it's easier on all the steering components too if you straighten the wheels when it's moving. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Thank you for that information. Yes, you can use a backup camera, but not as your main line of sight my friend. And yes, in the the state of Maryland, you have to do a 2 Point Reverse Turn: ua-cam.com/video/vrefrsJHXuM/v-deo.html And the 3-Point Turn is up to the discretion of the examiner. Well said Rick and I said before to you NJ allows the usage of backup cameras and parking sensors if the road test was taken on or after August 31st 2016. For some driving school they even offer road test service do they actually do it or not as part of their road test service.
Hi EpicThe112 - Thank you for your comment. I mentioned that briefly in the introduction, but still good information for those there in the Garden State. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest thanks Rick and for a driving school road test service does it mean that they do a mock road test before the actual one because it's sometimes Vague on the description on their websites.

What do you do if you can’t reach the back of the passenger’s seat? Everytime I try, I always end up, turned and up out of my seat. Is that allowed? Be out of your seat?
Do you have to stop after 1 vehicle length, do a 360 degree vehicle scan, and continue backing during the road test? Or there's no stopping and have to continue backing and looking around on a road test? I live in California.
Hi Nothing to see here - have a look at this vid my friend: ua-cam.com/video/AL3k_KFaHfA/v-deo.html And you don't have to stop every vehicle length, but pause and look out the front to ensure the car is still straight, do a 360° scan, and then resume. Parallel parking is no longer a requirement so they won't be doing that in the driving exam anymore. At least not in my city in Florida. It's mainly parking in and out of spaces, reversing and 3 point turns.
Hi Esmeralda Gems - that must be a specific requirement to your test centre my friend. The only 2 states that I know of that have a different requirement are MD and CA. @@nolahood3680 you'll do great, just breathe and relax, dont let the nerves get to you. Some tips for backing up during the test, after you put the car in reverse but before you start moving, you're going to want to place your right hand on the passenger seat and turn to look out the back window. You dont need to press the gas at this point for the test, just keep your foot near the break and let the car back its self up until the instructor tells you to stop The whole time you back up make sure you're looking out of the rear window! I took my test back in 2009 before cars had backup cameras so you HAD to look out of the rear window and I think they still test that way, so dont loose points because of using the back up cam! Practice looking out of the back window now so it's not a surprise during the test if you've only been using the camera. And as for turning when backing up, I've always heard all types of confusing things about how you turn your arms Opposite of where you want to go, FORGET ALL OF THAT. once you're in reverse and looking behind you just turn the wheel in the direction you want to go. If you're backing up and want to go left turn the wheel left, if you want to go right turn it right 🤗 Good luck on your test! You'll do amazing I'm sure!

It's unlikely that you'll have to reverse more than 1 car length, unless you're doing your test in California or Oregon. But you should slow or pause and do a 360° scan, because the traffic situation can change in a short space of time. If you don't do it, they probably won't fail you, just assign a couple of demerits. See this vid for automatic fails: ua-cam.com/video/bFBt7BWbm14/v-deo.html Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick
Yo guys I took the test and I got points deducted for scanning, I know it sounds dumb but in some states like Florida when you're doing the reverse test all you do is go back looking out your back window. Don't stop and 360 scan, make sure you look up the rules in your state.
Hi iSplash3s - did you pass your test? And you didn't get points off for scanning in your state, you got points off because the examiner doesn't know how to reverse safely. Examiners have discretion about what they do and don't give points for my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest yes I passed, she said I did great but the 360 scan wasn't what they were looking for when reversing 50 ft. She said that in Florida road test all you do is reverse like you did but without the 360 scan. I know it's weird.

@@smartdrivetest Hi Rick, thank you for taking the time to reply. Actually since you mentioned it, I think it would be helpful if you could make a short video on why it's important to choose the right lane when you're driving on the freeway. I live in CA and I travel to Los Angeles quite often because of my job. Traffic is bad and it's worse when you have a driver that's driving slow on the left lane which should be moving a bit faster. People start getting frustrated, tailgating, and having to swerve in and out between the left lane and the middle lane to pass the slow driver. Hope you consider it. Thank you!
Hi Cynthia Govea - Thank you for your comment and great suggestion. We will add that video to the list my friend. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Alright - this is the video you want my friend: ua-cam.com/video/9NRbMTST6-8/v-deo.html For backing without a backup camera, you're going to have to use the mirrors a bit. Also, as your backing stop approximately every vehicle length and look out the front to see if the vehicle is straight. Drop us a note if we can help further. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test on the FL driving test, you are not allowed to use any mirrors during the 50ft reverse driving. You strictly have to look behind you by turning your head, but I cannot seem to keep the vehicle straight.
You can use the mirrors, you just can't use them as your main point of observation. So every vehicle length or so, have a quick look in the mirror and make sure that you straight. Also, put a piece of tape at the top of the steering wheel so you know the tires are straight. Also, when you start, be sure that you're about 3' from the edge; that way you'll have some wiggle room to adjust as you're going backward. Cheers Rick

hey i just want to say that the to-the-point repetition of information has been really effective in teaching me these things that my adhd brain finds "boring". most often teachers just heavily emphasize important information One time, and expect you to retain it as they continue on with more information. repetition in practice > slow heavy emphasis.

Hey Rick, I Am Located In Gainesville FL & August 3rd I am Going for my road test at an tax collectors office which will have modified testing in a parking lot without the examiner inside of the vehicle . I’d really love practice on The steps I would have to take are :
1) QUICK STOP
2) BACKING SLOW SPEED
3) 3POINT TURN
4) STRAIGHT IN PARKING
PARKING ON A GRADE
Apolgogies for the late response. How did the driver's test go my friend? Cheers Rick
Hummm
HINT: ALWAYS - "Before" actually backing up, give your horn a short tap
to beep the horn to let those know surrounding your vehicle that your
now going to back up...the horn alerts others nearby rather than
silently just backing up.

Well said Rick and I said before to you NJ allows the usage of backup cameras and parking sensors if the road test was taken on or after August 31st 2016. For some driving school they even offer road test service do they actually do it or not as part of their road test service.

What do you do if you can’t reach the back of the passenger’s seat? Everytime I try, I always end up, turned and up out of my seat. Is that allowed? Be out of your seat?

Hi Nothing to see here - have a look at this vid my friend: ua-cam.com/video/AL3k_KFaHfA/v-deo.html And you don't have to stop every vehicle length, but pause and look out the front to ensure the car is still straight, do a 360° scan, and then resume. Parallel parking is no longer a requirement so they won't be doing that in the driving exam anymore. At least not in my city in Florida. It's mainly parking in and out of spaces, reversing and 3 point turns.

Omg rly I’m from Florida and I have to take my test Monday and I can’t back up for my lifeeee
@@nolahood3680 you'll do great, just breathe and relax, dont let the nerves get to you.
Some tips for backing up during the test, after you put the car in reverse but before you start moving, you're going to want to place your right hand on the passenger seat and turn to look out the back window. You dont need to press the gas at this point for the test, just keep your foot near the break and let the car back its self up until the instructor tells you to stop
The whole time you back up make sure you're looking out of the rear window!
If you're backing up and want to go left turn the wheel left, if you want to go right turn it right 🤗
Good luck on your test! You'll do amazing I'm sure!

In NY the road test didn’t allow you to twist your torso; you have to reverse by using the mirrors. NY actual does r teach you reversing. I may be wrong bc I never took a class but I never heard of it and we have a lot of crappy drivers that can’t park or drive forward much less reverse 🤣
Hi kennethsTutorials - Thank you for your comment. There isn't anywhere that I know that is different that this procedure for reversing. Who told you that my friend? All the best, Cheers Rick
I find it easier using mirrors
Hi Rick, are we allowed to put one hand on passenger's headrest when doing a reverse parking,?

Gonna be honest, i was always confused how to reverse a car because video games make them seem like your suppose to turn the opposite direction but this showed me that i was wrong and im glad

Do we need to turn on signals or emergency light while reversing ?
Hi Vijay Kumar Motupalli - you have to signal in the direction you're moving the vehicle my friend. Drop us a note if we can help further. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Rick,I got my G1 last December and I have to go for my G2 soon. I am having a hard time with parallel parking and I keep being told that I can not put my hand on the back of the passenger seat to reverse so I have to use my mirrors. If I do not use my mirrors to reverse, will I fail ?
Hi Carla - apologies for not responding earlier. How did the test go my friend? Cheers Rick
If we taking out from parking by reversing, is there is need to signal
Hi SACHIN PATEL - Thank you for your question. Yes - on a road test, signal every time you change the vehicle's direction. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Idk why but reversing stresses me OUT. Thank you for the video
Hi VanityAffair XO - Thank you for your comment. Yes, reversing a vehicle is challenging because our sense of place and space is completely different. However, if you master this skill, your overall driving will improve exponentially. I just really want to know...if ure driving in front if ure.steering is.left it goes left if its right it.goes right.. then wht if reversing... if ure steering is in left. Do the booty of ure.car.also goes to the left side?

This might be a dumb question but will the examiner fail you if u don’t stop every car length to do a 360 scan while reversing?
It's unlikely that you'll have to reverse more than 1 car length, unless you're doing your test in California or Oregon. But you should slow or pause and do a 360° scan, because the traffic situation can change in a short space of time. If you don't do it, they probably won't fail you, just assign a couple of demerits. See this vid for automatic fails: ua-cam.com/video/bFBt7BWbm14/v-deo.html Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest Thanks Rick!!
Hi, so my dads car has really heavy steering. For the road test, is it okay when I am turning the wheel a lot to take the hand off of the back of the seat for a second while I turn the wheel?
Hi Presto Car Talk and Reviews. - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your question. You can do that my friend. Also, have the vehicle moving when you turn the wheel - that will make it easier. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Do u fully turn the wheel backing up
Parallel parking pull over parking and back up parking is 90% chance you will get.
What if you have to do 50ft reverse driving on the FL test without a curb? I can’t seem to keep the vehicle straight and I failed on it because of it.
Does your car have a backup camera? Let me know and we'll help you out my friend. Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test No. The newest car we own is a 05 Toyota Camry!
Cheers Rick
In reversing.... if.your steering turn to letf.. where the booty goes on? This.makes.me.sad. its.really hard.for.me.to.do.the reversing pls help me to.learn

Would it be okay if a person keeps both hands on the wheel while reversing from a parking spot?
Hi Meganmooo_ - Thank you for your comment and query. If you have both hands on the steering wheel, it is nigh impossible for you to look out the rear window and observe correctly while reversing.
