Are yama michi 山道 and tozan do登山道 essentially the same thing, or is there a significant difference between the two that are of importance?

Hi!!! Actually it depends on the context. If we are talking about hiking then they mean the same thing. Although, most Japanese hikers I’ve known use登山道.
Meanwhile 山道 could mean mountain path ( trail )and it could also mean a road going to the mountains.
