I love that you reacted to exactly this song, Michal. Most reactors are distracted by the sand artist, but you werent. You took this in, and really listen to this masterpiece. Angelina has a lot of top notch performances, but this one is one of her absolute best in my opinion. It is just unbelievable how she, just becoming a teenager, does the best version of this song I have ever heard. I have heard so many versions and covers, but this is my top choice. And she does it live, no studio, no second take, or second chances. For instance, what she does right here, at 4:06, that little vibrato detail in the end, is not matched by anyone. Always enjoy a professional's take on Angelina's singing ability. Your analysis was very informative. However, Angelina is a singer with 1,000 voices so your analysis can only apply to the actual song you are reacting to. Her natural inclination is to sing jazz but her vocal abilities allows her to switch styles seamlessly. Happy 40th. Love your voice.

You have a new subscriber but BEWARE! This is a long comment. I hope you have the patience to read to the end. Thank you for discovering and reacting my favourite singer. Angelina re-arranged this song, both melody and lyrics, to more truly reflect how she thought the song should be sung. She does this with many of her cover songs. Her fans call it "Angelina-fying" a song. Your analysis of Angelina's performance has given me a greater appreciation of just how very good she is and I hope you will continue your journey of discovering her. It is a long road, with over 130 videos, but every one you hear will bring you delight and I guarantee that although you will often be surprised by her j=choice of song, you will never be disappointed by her performance.
My introduction to Angelina was on her first appearance at Norway's Got Talent and I didn't expect much from a 7-year-old. Just a cute little girl, all nervous, rushing the song in parts, hesitating and then stumbling over or forgetting her words and generally acting her age and doing her best to get through a childish song like "Twinkle, twinkle little star". What did I see? Well, it was a seven-year-old child, with wild hair and gaps in her mouth, where there once were baby teeth. And that was when the normal perception ended and things turned upside down. She confidently answered the questions put to her by a Judge. Declared she was going to sing a song by the legendary Billie Holiday. Gestured off-stage for the technician to start the music and then started singing. The body of the 7-year-old was still there but the voice wasn't. Or was it? I was surprised then and that surprise is still with me, some six years later.
I have followed her career since I saw that first video on UA-cam and in the six years she has been singing publicly she has mastered many musical genres, including Blues, Country, Disco, Jazz,Pop, R&B and Soul, EDM and Rock and covered songs first performed by many famous singers, like Adele, Whitney Houston, Nancy and Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Lana del Ray, Gloria Gaynor, Andy Williamns, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong and many others. What is more extraordinary is that she takes ownership of every song she sings while still paying respect to the original. You will notice that she never goes into unnecessary theatrics. Never sings those high or low notes unless they are absolutely necessary. Never projects herself in any performance which says "look how good I am". She just sings the song as she feels it is meant to be sung. And I'll add an even more extraordinary item for you to consider, to show how unique she is. She has the innate ability not only to sing a song as emotionally as the song deserves but to be able to communicate those same emotions to the listener.
As I have noted above, I have been following her career a long time and have listened to every interview she has given and every documentary about her and every performance she has ever given. What stands out for me is how a very shy and humble girl in her normal life, can be transformed into the perfect vehicle for the song she has chosen to sing, once she starts to sing.
Although the gift of singing and all her performances appear to be effortless, Angelina works very hard to ensure that the one she is going to record reflects what she sees as the correct way to meld both lyrics and melody. Most of her performances are recorded in her home studio, either with background music or a single guitar. Most are done in one take. She treats the whole thing as a hobby. As we would have said when I was young. "There is no 'side' to her" She is completely transparent to the world.
Perhaps you would like to go back a few years and work forward. By doing so, you will come to the realisation that she is "unique" and I don't use that word loosely. There is truly no other singer who has her versatility and sheer ability to communicate the emotions of a song to her listeners. I doubt there is another singer who works so hard to ensure that, when she sings the song, it is sung in such a way that her listener becomes enmeshed in the emotions

Thank you for your insightful reaction to our girl, you explain very good some of her talent, but this song does not really show who she is. Her other AGT-Champions performances especially Bohemian Rhapsody shows more of her, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is also a goodie worth breaking down.. She can do so much much more than this "simple" piece of music, even though it is beautiful. What is impressive is that Bohemian is her own interpretation, she did it herself, while Yellow Brick Road is Sarah Bareilles version "Angelina style"

Actually, she is 7 years into her career. she has been performing prolifically all over the world since winning Norway's Got Talent in 2014.
She has her heart in jazz but combine it with a modern sound, so I think that is why she is unique. And she does not belt more than she thinks the song requires

English is Angelina's third language, behind Norwegian and Farsi. I suspect that's why her pronunciation is unusual.
She has been speaking English fluently from a very early age. I don't think this is a handicap, it's an artistic choice.
Does she even speak Farsi?
@Willy S Okay I never heard her speak Farsi, have you? I heard her sing a little in Japanese so she knows a little of that.
@@artfartzy There are a couple of reasons to think Angelina speaks Farsi without actually hearing her speak it. Firstly, it is the native tongue of the three people that have been among the greatest influences on her life, her Iranian grandmother, her mother, and her uncle Mike Astar who is also her manager. Secondly, when she met the barefoot orphan in Iran she carried on a conversation with her. That had to have been in Farsi, it would seem. I doubt that a homeless little six-year-old girl in Iran would be fluent in Norwegian or English. I don't know anything about the educational system in Iran but would guess it is not like Norway, and the child was young enough that she might not have had any real schooling. Angelina's mom & uncle spent 11 years of their childhood in Japan, so they and their mother are fluent in Japanese. Her grandfather was Japanese. She may not be fluent, but it is apparent that she has an ear for languages, as multilingual children usually do. But then I don't know anything for sure. Maybe someone else can give you a better answer.

You say that she's using a lot of vocal techniques that these kids are using these days. I would actually contend that she is borrowing those techniques from some of the jazz greats that are from before your time, young lady, like from the 40s and 50s. I thought the same. Angelina doesn't conform to today's youth tendencies for musical embellishments or pronunciation. I was pretty surprised to hear the reactor say that as Angelina's style has always been more old school.
I always love listening to people that really know what they are talking about describing some of the things they are hearing from Angelina. I imagine someone with your expertise could fill books with all the stuff Angelina is going to show you. You have now heard her at 8 singing "fly me to the moon" and at 13 doing this song. You have literally a hundred amazing songs between those two. Not just 100 performances... 131 different song titles on record. Angelina sings so many styles and genres, and she will still surprise you even after you have seen her sing 50 times. At 14, she is still near the "beginning of her career", but she is already years deep in perfecting her craft.
I really hope to see you do more of her, because you are the best kind of person to be analyzing this master. I look forward to you hearing one of her more intimate settings where you can really hear all those details she packs in. - Angelina Jordan was born Jan 10 2006 in Oslo, Norway. She is currently 14
- She began singing at the age of one and a half
- At 2 or 3 she discovered Jazz through her grandmother and started studying all the greats from Jazz history with youtube videos.
- *Why Angelina always sings barefoot* - When Angelina was 6 years old, she was traveling with her grandmother and met a poor girl with no shoes trying to make money on the streets. They talked for a while and discussed their dreams. It was cold and the girl had scars on her feet. Seeing this, Angelina took off her shoes and gave them to the girl. The girl thanked her and told Angelina she would pray for her every day. That day Angelina made a vow to always sing barefoot until all the children of the world could have shoes. To this day, whenever Angelina is performing in public, she sings barefoot as a way to remember that little girl and to remind us that there are less fortunate people in the world that could use our help.
Angelina holds so true to this promise that she has sung outdoors in Norway, in december... barefoot. She has sung at a dinner with ex-pres Obama... barefoot. She went on AGT (possibly the biggest stage in the world)...bare foot. She made a promise at 6 years old, and has stuck strong to it for years. That takes a special kind of person.
- She has always been the driving force behind her own singing career. It was her that asked her mother to take her to Norways Got Talent, where she auditioned at 7 years old and went on to win the whole show at just 8 years old.
- In an interview after the show, when asked what she was going to do with the prize money, the 8 year old replied, "I would like to give it to orphans that need clothes and shoes"
- When Angelina was 9 years old she became the youngest published author in Norway, when she wrote a book about the story of why she doesn't wear shoes when she sings. She donated proceeds from the sales of the book to help children in need.
- The reason you may not have heard of her is because her parents are very protective of her childhood. After she won NGT, they did not want her to be thrust into stardom before she had a chance to grow up as a normal child, and get her education. They allowed her to do a few select shows (mainly private and charity events) with a couple public shows every year when she is out of school. Her mother said in an interview that they have turned down 90% of the offers that came in. Over the years since NGT, they have turned down offers from many major record labels for and even disney.
- Angelina has covered more than 130 songs and over 65 artists in the last 6 years. She always selects the songs herself... everything ranging from old classic jazz to modern pop. She is able to change her voice to match any song she sings and make it her own. (she can cover Amy Winehouse and Lana del Rey like nobody else)
- Angelina has collaborated with some very big names over the last few years... Quincy Jones, Mark Ronson, David Foster, Alan Walker and many more. All of which heard her and were blown away by her talent.
- Angelina has written three of her own original songs: "What is Life", "Shield" and "Oslo". (all are amazing...all can be found on youtube)
In summary, Angelina Jordan is destined to be one of the greatest singers to have ever lived. This is just my opinion, but if you listen closely to any of her stuff you will hear the greatness. She sings with a natural style. There is no acting, no showing off, there are no unnecessary runs, or big belty notes just for the purpose of saying "hey look at me sing". She once said "when I sing I go into a beautiful world in my head", and you can always hear the results of that. When Angelina sings it is pure soul, pure emotion, pure music.
Update: On Aug 26, 2020 Angelina's Manager/Uncle announced in an interview that they have decided on Republic Records as the best fit for Angelina and she is now signed with them as their "highest priority new artist". She has done so much already, but at 14 she is just getting started!!!

She changes her sound and voice every time she make a new song or cover. Often as good as or even better than the original. She has been my favorit singer since I first heard her on you tube 1,5 years ago. Before that saw her at Norway got talent 2014. That was unbeliveable.

First, I apologize in advance - I tend not to say anything unless I have more to say than most people want to hear. Sorry. 😐 I hope you manage to get through it and it’s not too painful.
Music has been a huge part of my life since the early ’70s. I’m a former low grade vocalist and mediocre grade drummer and grew up with music all around me in the home, at school, and in my community. And I really believe Angelina may already be the most gifted vocalist I have ever heard. As others have said, to get an appreciation of that you really need to hear more of her repertoire. I hope you do.
Some random comments on your very informative commentary.
Her vibrato and ornaments. She generally uses them much more sparingly than she did here. She has lived a good chunk of her life in LA and I think she knows what AGT judges and voters and audience members are looking for. She belted in all three of her AGT performances. Belting is just not a thing she does normally unless the song specifically calls for it (e.g. I Have Nothing, It’s a Man’s World). She isn’t about showing off her skills. She’s about picking and choosing and using them judiciously and as appropriate to convey the meaning of the song and project feeling and emotion to the listener (I’m Still Holding Out for You, Wicked Game are really good examples of this).
Pronunciation. I don’t think she generally chooses creative mispronunciations of words (like, say, Lewis Capaldi - who I adore - does). English is not her first language and I believe that’s part of it. That said, yes, I do think there are occasions when it becomes part of an artistic device but for her those occasions are highly selective, I think.
New cop of singers. I *really* don’t think her singing style is influenced at all by this. Her influences are the like of Billie Holliday, Etta James, James Brown. Her contemporary influences are the likes of Amy Winehouse, Adele and Lana Del Rey. She’s been listening to jazz since she was 1.5 yrs old and her first public performances were all jazz or blues standards (Gloomy Sunday, I’m a Fool to Love You, Bang Bang, Summertime, Fly Me to the Moon, I Put a Spell on You, Every Time We Say Goodbye etc). Jazz, Blues, R&B, Soul - that is the core of her musical identity.
Maturity. YES!! One thing that you can’t simply teach a 7 (or even 13) year-old is maturity. It is about the choices she makes to, for example, resist the pull to a “show-and-tell” approach with her vocal skills. She really is very judicious in her use of them. Her maturity is especially evident in her patience. She never rushes anything, and has been known to go out of her way to slow down orchestras that she is performing with (check out the rehearsal video for her performance of Etta James’ classic arrangement of “At Last”). Also, you can listen to “I Will Survive” and correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems to me that she significantly slowed down the intro to that song solely through the phrasing -- i.e. without even modifying the tempo.
Angelina also has three wonderful originals and I encourage you to check them out. “Shield”, in particular (Skavlan performance) is a brilliant, Bond theme-like tribute to her superhero family who protect her and look out for her. When this beautiful, talented, sweet, generous, overwhelmingly charitable child sings “Forgive me for all that I am” in this song it literally makes me want to cry every time.
Others will have discussed her bare feet and charitable work. And her recent signing to Republic Records as their “top priority new artist”. These are exciting times for Angelina and her supporters.
I think I’ll leave a separate comment with a list I have of suggested songs, each with a short explanation of it’s significance in Angelina’s repertoire. It’s not a request list. It’s more of a “roadmap” to guide you to the other nooks and crannies of her stylistic range. That said, I’ll be looking seriously at your Patreon and then I may well be sending requests your way!

Thanks for your reaction. She won Norwegian talents at the age of 8, and is predicted to become the next superstar! She is also known for being able to adjust the voice to which genre she sings. She has approx. 130 covers on UA-cam + 3 originals.

Angelina told her to “never give up.” In return, the girl told Angelina she would pray for her, and asked her to “remember me.”
She might as well sing in a bad cellphone microphone, without a microphone, or to collaborate with professional musicians. She does not need any autotune or digital aids to sing. It is real song in an otherwise polished world. She just sings because it's her passion.

Amazingly, her passion for music began at just one-and- a-half years of age when Angelina first saw Whitney Houston on UA-cam performing I Will Always Love You. Whitney - and later Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington - became her first major musical influences.
At the age of seven, Angelina auditioned for Norway’s Got Talent performing Billie Holiday’s Gloomy Sunday. She won the competition with the show drawing record TV audiences.

Another interesting point in the interview is that Angelina Jordan's appearance in "America's Got Talent" hung in the balance for a long time because the program is bound by long-term contracts which in the worst case can force a participant into a special management and record company.

This singer is from Kazakhstan she too is 14 years old. She is making her way through AGT. She just was voted through to the semi-finals. Her name is Daneliya Tuleshova. She is six months younger than Angelina and a foot shorter but every bit as big a voice. Daneliya is more of a Pop singer. She to entered and won her first competition. She started off with a bang as well as her blind audition for The Voice Kids Ukraine went viral. She sang 'Stone Cold' for the audition. Well that performance took off for the diminutive 10 year old. As off this day it has been viewed more than 59 million times. She won the competition and still is the youngest winner and was the first non-Ukrainian to win that competition. She also has been performing around the world since.Evan at 14 she is barely 5'0"tall. But she can belt with the best of them, but her real gift is conveying emotions. She has a way of making you feel every emotion she feels when singing a song.When asked by an interviewer how she could sing a song the way she does? Daneliya thought for a moment and said, " I go to a place in my mind where the song is true then I sing it." Anyway I'm going to stop now. Start with her viral of Stone Cold in 2017. Then maybe go to her latest of 'Sign Of The Times" the Harry Styles song. Maybe second should be her version of 'Rise Up' she sang on the Voice. That will give you a better idea of her dealing with a song that isn't a straight belting song.

Happy birthday. I'm glad you reacted to her. I was impressed by your technical understanding. This one is definitely not one of my favorites; it's like a three ring circus. Her remake of Bohemian, earlier in the competition, is much more brilliant (of course, it's a greater song to start with). I much prefer her when she choses the songs--so many brilliant covers of brilliant songs. Adele, Lana del Rey, Sam Smith, Rhianna, and much more. She's a genius, much more influenced the jazz greats than anyone else. She never strains and she's never in a hurry. She's also kind and humble. She just signed with Republic, home of so many greats, at 14.

Hi Michal happy birthday from a fellow Virgo, my birthday was last week Aug 23rd on the cusp, as for your reaction you instantly go to the top of the list as far listening to the entire song before reacting and for your very professional in depth details of what is taking place during Angelina's unforgettable performances I don't know how many songs you have had a chance to view of hers but take from someone who just discovered her at the beginning of the year she is the real deal and then some, she out does every artists songs with her covers and she can sing all genres, she just signed a record deal and I and all of her millions of fans can hardly wait.to see her live someday when safe again, but once again a great reaction and can hardly wait to see your next reaction and once again happy birthday and stay healthy and safe.

I think this is the worst of the three AGT performances. I don’t think it’s as stretching as the other two performances, and there is too much background noise. Also, Angelina only sings like this on AGT. If you listen to some of her pre-AGT stuff like her Witney tribute, or her own song Shield, it’s nothing like this at all.

Angelina in the passed few days has signed for elite producers Republic Records and is being fast tracked. Notable artists as of 2020, the Republic Records roster includes James Bay, James Blake, Kid Cudi, Florence + the Machine, Ariana Grande, Seth MacFarlane, John Mellencamp, Julia Michaels, Post Malone, Of Monsters and Men, Liam Payne, Black Sabbath, Hailee Steinfeld, Taylor Swift, Stevie Wonder and more. She is right on the edge of her dreams right now. We're lucky to have the 130+ YT uploads because from this point I suspect we'll not be getting many more covers, if any at all. Not bad for 14 and a half year old.
Since first hearing Angelina in Norway's Got Talent video, her native accent is clear in the pronunciation of words and I've wondered if that is why her sound is so unique to American ears. Loved your interpretation though since you are the professional. This particular performance by all three artists was stunning.

Thanks for the reaction and analysis. You can tell true Angelina fans, like I am, because we dislike having to watch Angelina’s performance diluted or drowned out by the other activity going on. They were fine, but Angelina usually captivates and mesmerizes an audience after the first few notes because of her voice and delivery. With everything going on here, this was a strange situation. I would really like to hear your analysis of Angelina in a more typical performance. However, as you’ll see, there is no typical for Angelina. She covers many different styles uniquely and beautifully. She has a special affinity for jazz and the vocal freedom it allows, but the bluesy, soulful side of her-combined with her unique voice-is unmatched.
You’ll get many recommendations, but to hear her ability to interpret lyrics, her low resonant register, and her musicality in phrasing, try her covers of A Million Years Ago or Stay. Either of those will show you her amazing voice and delivery, with just an acoustic guitar behind her. I’ve enjoyed music all my life, starting in the 1950’s. Angelina is the best I’ve ever heard.
I'm in my mid 70's. I agree, among female singers, she is the best I have ever heard. I remember when Barbara Streisand came up, Whitney Houston, Adele, etc. Those are/ were, phenomenal singers. But Angelina's tone is the most pleasing to my ears. And her ability to draw the listener into the emotions of the songs, is unequalled by any of the other awesome female singers I have mentioned. After listening to a good number of her covers, I also believe, as great as the other three singers I've mentioned have been, none of them could beautifully cover as many other great artists as Angelina. Listen to her covers of Adele, Whitney Houston, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Screaming Jay Hawkins, etc. Have never heard anyone as captivating and talented as Angelina.

What a night of disappointment it was for me when i watched Angelina being pushed aside that way.
I felt that the audience and the judges were forced to give to her a sort of divided attention, devoting their full support to the magical and awesome work of the sand artist Karina Simonova.
Each time i watched that video, i therefore closed my eyes and listened to Angelina with a full heart and a complete undivided focus.

Angelina’s performance in this group setting was perfect to me. She was respectful of her competitors and not an overwhelming belt it out because I know she can. However it might have been her downfall as well.

This was actually my favorite performance of hers on that show. It’s a little bittersweet, because you can tell the audiences attention is split, and they’re not giving the full credit to some of those amazing power notes she’s doing toward the end, as far as I can tell. Anyway, I just love how she sounds on this song, and it’s really the first time that I really fell in love with the song since the original didn’t do much for me.

Please do yourself a favor and explore Angelina’s repertoire on UA-cam. I don’t think this is good song to react to, because it is a collaboration with other performers, and as a result she doesn’t have the creative freedom that she normally does. Normally she chooses her own songs and creates her own arrangements. Please check out some of her earlier covers. You will be amazed as she tackles many different genres almost always equal to the original and often becomes “her” song. She also has 3 originals and two songs that were written for her. I’m going to subscribe in hopes that you do more reactions to Angelina.

Watch Tyler's audition on AGT when he got the golden buzzer and how he got started.Loved your eval. Having such abundance of talent in one place is overwhelming. Three car wrecksbwith brain injuries taught CNN me to slow down, separate comlications, and repeat as much as I need to "get it". In fact, "getting IT" together is a daily challenge that starts the night before. I appreciate all the critiques and learn something from all.
Angelina's change your pronunciation I would not call a new wave of young singing. Her forte is jazz, and she changes words to make them more soulful and jazzy.
Wow! You sure don't look like you're turning 40 and have two children. It's a pleasure to listen to someone who really knows what she's talking about critique such singers as Angelina Jordan--personally, I think she was robbed of a win on this competition and it makes me suspect that the things is rigged when a mediocre dance troupe wins against her. Your reactions are so much more insightful than just watching people say, "Wow, what can I say..., then ask for money" You truly know singing.
As others have mentioned: 1) nice analysis and attempt to go back through and really listen rather than just talk to hear yourself talk; 2) HOWEVER, as others have mentioned, and you will no doubt soon discover, while your analysis might be accurate for this song, and for most singers you would be able to apply it universally...Angelina Jordan isn't most singers. She's a true prodigy and seemingly can morph her voice into whatever she needs it to be, not to show off, because she never does, but to make the song she is singing into art. When she sings old jazz tunes, she sounds like a 40yr old torch singer. When she sings Adele, she sounds like Adele, when she sings Amy Winehouse she matches her note for note and vocal crack for vocal crack, she's even covered disco and country tracks and you would never know it wasn't the original artist...well maybe the original artists on their best day because of that amazing voice. Earlier in AGT she earned the Golden Buzzer for doing a Nora Jonesesque interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody which brought down the house and earned accolades from the remaining members of the band itself. Her voice is gorgeous, lush and smokey, but Someone You Loved was actually one of the relatively few times she's ventured into current pop tunes, although she did some gorgeous covers of Lana Del Rey and Rihanna a couple of years ago. And as noted, for a kick of fun it's hard to beat her most popular video -- 9 yr old Angelina channeling Screamin' Jay Hawikins with I Put A Spell On You; 3) Happy Birthday! 39th, again, I think I heard you say.

You have absolutely risen to the challenge or really as I can observe this is not even a challenge for you this is who you are. I would absolutely love you as a vocal coach for me personally. You bring such appreciative depth and limited lamens understanding to this performance. I just can't thank you enough.
It's always a pleasure to listen to such an informed and expert analysis. You have an outstanding ear and great understanding of the art of singing. I think Angelina is moving to the top of her profession, but in the same way that classical performers move to the top of their professions: she never compromises her best abilities to suit the largest audience, but instead inspires an audience that understands and appreciates her exceptional genius and talent.
God, I just hate how they mixed these three acts in a way that had the audience yelling over all her best lines. The show was great, but it's a singing contest, and the resonance of her voice begs for people to lay off.
You might enjoy doing a review of Angelina's fellow young Norwegian, Aurora. Given you have reviews Billie Eilish, who professes to have started singing after hearing Aurora, there's a serious connection. Aurora is also on the most iconic voices you will likely hear (completely incomparable), and a fantastic writing soul who messes with your emotions and sense of social consciousness. I suggest hearing her first as ONLY VOCALS, and the best example of that is the STRIPPED version of her song, Through the Eyes of a Child:

Hoping you give this one a reaction because I'm always interested when a vocal coach actually shows us how someone is doing what they do. We all know how great Angelina is. It's almost now to the point where you know there's nothing that she can not do. Well maybe a few genres wouldn't fit her style. But I'm sure she could do any of them if she chose to. But I'd like to hear you react to this young lady and get your thoughts on her style and vocals. She's extremely different from today's singers. Has a combination of old school classics mix in with some of the beautiful vocals of today. Yet she sounds like neither. She's more of her own style. Please give her a listen and hopefully some comments or a reaction. I'll be wishfully looking for it.

Here is my question for the vocal coaches who provide technical comments about what singers do to produce certain sounds. Do the singers know that is what they are doing and purposefully do it, or do they just know the sound they are going for and do what they need to produce that sound? I have been singing since before I can remember and can produce a lot of different effects with my voice, but couldn't begin to tell you how I am producing those effects.
Some singers just naturally fall into these techniques through play and experimentation. Some come to them via formal instruction, and they are the ones who can best articulate what they are doing. Of course it’s not necessary to name a technique to be able to use it!
@@MichalTowberVocalCoaching Thank you for the quick response. I guess I am wondering if professional singers or singers with a lot of training think of these techniques when performing. I find it hard to believe that a singer like Angelina thinks "I am going to lower my larynx and tilt my voice forward here, and then add vibrato here" while singing. They may be able to explain it afterwards, but I can't imagine anyone consciously making those decisions while performing. I would imagine they know the sound they are after and do what is necessary to produce that sound without even thinking about it.
That all may sound stupid, but the reason I bring it up is because a lot of voice coaches I have listened to break down performance speak like the singer is consciously making those decisions as they perform. I would equate it to driving to your local grocery store. I am sure I could break down every step (how hard to depress the accelerator, when to brake, how far to turn the steering wheel for each turn, etc.), but those things never occur to me while driving. I know how to get to my local grocery store, so I just get in my car and drive.
That isn't a knock on vocal coaches in any way. I am not a vocal coach, so I am curious.

A pity that it was not only Angelina :( A single violin almost never sounds good. And those sand drawings I could do without, distraction.
I actually liked the overall performance, though I agree that if the purpose is to focus on the vocal performance it would be much better on its own.
It was horrible. It was as if she provided the background music for the sand drawings. All the attention was onto the visuals on the screen. I don't watch this because I get so annoyed at AGT for doing such a stupid thing.
