You definitely need headphones for Tool. If I were you I start with a few from Aenima album. 46 and 2 , Stink Fist, aenima, just to make a few then go back a little and do some from Opiate, sober was one you just did, Prison Sex, yes Tool will probably be one of the best bands you will ever hear. You should absolutely go down the Tool rabbit hole. I thought they might be a little advanced for you. They are Progressive Metal, but really a category to themselves. Very intelligent band. Deep lyrics, interesting polyrhythms. The Pot, Schism, Lateralus, Aenema, 46&2, Jambi, The Grudge among many many others.
I agree with every thing you said but maybe move Lateralus to the end of the list so the reactors mind stays intact... in other words make sure he is ready for it
Their music is both startling but powerfully rhythmic, this is one of my desert island songs. 46 and 2 next please to have your mind altered
Hey Rob - Great Reaction... I’m a big fan but actually I haven’t watched the video for this song in a while. ~ FYI - The video is actual claymation & was done by the bands Guitarist Adam Jones. Prior to TOOL he did special FX work on a few major Hollywood films like Jurassic Park. - 🥂

Tool is my fav band. It’s cool you started with some early stuff, you’ll see more of their evolution. This is the album I was introduced to them on when it came out. But TBH they get so much more incredible.

Alice in Chains is one of the BEST band since the early 90's.....ROOSTER is the song of many great ones by them

I don't think so....Layne wasn't the addict he became when this song was released...Both bands started success around the same time.....doubt any fact to this!@@mparsons85

I'm 44 yrs old from The Bronx, NY & am a fan of music of all genres. I have been a TOOL fan since their inception in the early 90s....for many reasons. Their heavy sound in contrast w/ Maynards soft, melodic voice. But he can also hit those hard rock angry, loud notes & heavy metal "growls." They have a unique sound that has not & I think cannot be imitated. Maynard's lyrics are often metaphorical & very intelligent. TOOL was actually a band that for the first time has forced me to refer to a dictionary quite a few times to understand what's going on.
TOOL has stated that they have dabbled & experimented w/ drugs, but never at any point were addicted. Many of their songs pertaining to issues regarding drugs are about some of their many beloved friends in music & the other arts. SOBER is about a friend that feels he cannot be creative unless he's under the influence. And the part about "Jesus won't you whistle something but the past & done" is not about Jesus or religion. It's in the context of telling someone "Jesus Christ!!! Can we please talk/converse/discuss something else for once?"
Last thing, as in Maynard's metaphors & referring to drugs/addiction....the album UNDERTOW is all about that. "Water" could be drugs/temptation/relapse..."I'm back down...I'm all the way down...I'm helpless & beneath...the undertow."

Hey J, Actually you havent even scratched the surface of the exciting amazing music out there...Tool has a great different kinda sound, some creepy/talented videos, deep lyrics. Im sure most of us if not all has had these feelings of Just wanting to sleep/ or somehow stop thinking thru the bad and wishing to wake up and start over again...Thanks J. Peace

The music of this band is so otherworldly and unlike anything I had heard at the time it came out…it literally expanded my consciousnesses
People with the sickness of addiction only want two things: Drugs or to go back in time and never touch it. EVER.
The lines “ Why can’t we not be sober” “just want to start this over” hit SO HARD.

The singer of Tool, Maynard James Keenan, and the original singer of Alice in Chains, Layne Stayley were friends. I have bootlegs, that you can probably find on UA-cam, of Layne singing on stage with Tool. Maynard also joined the AIC on stage years after Layne's death and pefromed Them Bones and Man in the Box and was surprisingly close to imitating Layne's sound.
Their early stuff is a nice mix of grunge and metal. As their albums go on, they get much more psychedelic and progressive 🤘🏻😎

I hope you'll check out Maynard's (lead singer) other projects/bands as well. He's in a band called A Perfect Circle (I suggest the song "Judith") and Puscifer (I suggest "Potions" which also features Trent Reznor from another great band, Nine Inch Nails). Everything he touches is musical genius.

He wrote this about a friend of his that died from addiction. He is pretty much singing from the perspective of the drug/alcohol. The lyrics "I will find a center in you chew if up leave", "bring you up to let you down", and other lyrics. He is the substance talking to the addicted person.
Duuuuude!! The Tool rabbit hole runs super deep. You won't regret. Suggestion: headphones and lyric video.

I have to let you know, if you look up, O'Keefe music foundation, you and Amber will be so impressed with these kids they are 10 years of age and up they sing 2 of Tool songs. 1 is sober and 2 is 46&2. I was so impressed with these kids they do those Tool songs so good if not better. + 1 band for female Friday is called. The Runaways, song is called Cherry Bomb. Have a great day. Going forward with TOOL pull up the lyrics. Maynard has some very deep lyrics and you can't always understand what he is singing. TOOL is a band that is like no one else.

This is the best band in the history of mankind. All four of these musicians are masters of their art and every song will leave you deep in thinking about yourself and your place in the world around you as well as the spiritual universe we’re all a part of.

The Tool Brigade is finding you. :-D Tool music videos are always a mind trip. They won't always help you grasp the meaning behind the lyrics, and for some people they're a definite distraction. I would have suggested reacting to the live performance vid instead.
All of the band members are world class musicians, though I only place the drummer Danny Carey as true world elite. Yet there's an alchemy between them, making the sum greater than the parts. Tool is in my mind one of the most important bands of our time for this reason.
There are many incredible songs by them you could do reactions to. I would suggest Stinkfist, The Pot, 46 & 2, H (just "H"), Parabol/Parabola, Vicarious, Right In Two, Lateralus, and Aenima.
Introduce Amber to Tool - best of the best prog metal bands. My son is a drummer for a heavy metal band in Ottawa and this is a band we BOTH love!

This entire album is Shadow Therapy. This song is about mourning within the process of recovery, he's saying "why can't we not be sober, I just want to start this over why can't we sleep/dream forever" I just want to start this over. Once a person is in recovery, choosing to be sober is a type of loss, saying goodbye to the only comfort from your depression or coping with trauma. This album is like his musical diary, So many people can relate to these experiences, Prison Sex is a sexual assault survivor song, My personal favorite is Enima, about Mother Earth swallowing L.A in a massive flood. Learn to swim!!! 😎
Maynard actually says this song is about a friend of the band that thought he needed drugs and alcohol to be creative.
Recommend you stay away from the music videos (even the fan-made ones) until you're familiar with the songs. They're bizarre, have little to nothing to do with the songs, and will only serve to distract you from the music. Lyric videos are your best bet, as in many songs the vocals are low in the mix (on purpose).
Hold off on the song, Schism until you get familiar with their vibe because there's a ton of meter changes that will mess with your head. Try, The Pot next. 👍🏽🤘🏽😁

Tool is probably one of the most cerebral of hard-rock bands, music-wise. Time signatures especially - there was one entire album based on the Mandelbrot set in its time signatures!
Tool is amazing and they're videos are works of art! Need to react to Schism by Tool, the official video - one of the best bass guitar intros ever and two amazing performers.

Other great Tool songs include "Schism", "Stinkfist", "Forty six & 2", to name a few
You have to give Sevendust’s Face to Face a listen. Lajon’s style and talents on vocals are incredible.
The genius to the lyrics are that Maynard Keenan writes things with double (sometimes triple) negatives and the true meaning can be somewhat confusing. Here in the chorus it's "Why can't we not be sober?" The version you had here was a little cleaned up as the original uncensored lyrics are "Jesus won't you f**king whistle something but the past and done"
One thing a lot of people miss, multiple perspectives within a song. There are like three characters in this song. One is the alcohol ( the worthless liar), one is the addict (regretful) , the other an outsider hoping to help. Separation Of the lyrical characters helps to unweave the knots Tool tied you up in. Other bands do it as well. Slipknot. Manson. Many others.

This might be my favorite music video of all time (because of the video and the lyrics combined, but not because of the instruments and vocals, although I really like those also, just not at the "best of all time" level.)

Ohhhhh so glad you’ve chosen a Tool song. Definitely one of my favorite bands ever. I’d definitely recommend watching lyric videos with them. They’ve got some incredible music, and to be every album is different an incredible. I always go back and forth between Aenima and Lateralus being my fave albums. Hard to choose.

They are INCREDIBLE live. Maynard, the lead vocals, really doesn’t like to be seen, so he will often perform in shadow. If you like Tool, 46 and 2 is another great, but also check out the band A Perfect Circle.
Yes I saw them once and he did the majority of the concert with his back to the crowd. I didn't get it then but I understand it more now.

Ha, you started on one of their lesser songs. They are the rare example of a band that moves beyond their talent levels album to album. You can tell the difference and which album just by how the songs sound. Unlike say, ACDC where the songs are pretty much the same songs and arrangements album to album.
With Tool, their songs are musical and lyrical journeys best enjoyed as entire albums. That being said, every Tool fan have favorite songs.

I don't think about drugs at all. Knowing this band I think this song is about the pain of truth. The singer wished he could go back to when he was ignorant and happily asleep the the real world. This is one of my favorite bands and Maynard is my favorite male vocalist and they have so much great music. You may want to check out Aenema, Opiate, or 46 And 2.

Tool guitarist Adam Jones explained in an interview wtih Guitar School: "The song and video are based on a guy we know who is at his artistic best when he's loaded. A lot of people give him s--t for that. I don't tell people to do or not do drugs. You can do what you want, but you have to take responsibility for what happens. If you become addicted and a junkie, well, that's your fault.
The chorus refers to same old same old that the friend was trapped in.
Jesus won't you F--king whistle, something but the past and done" is actually referring to how this guy kept talking about the same old stuff over and over again, as in, "Christ almighty, can't we talk about something new???"
BTW a you listened to the “radio-edit” version of this. The chorus drops a few f-bombs in there.
