Great video! Trying to find a 240z project car, but they are hard to find in Sweden. So meanwhile I’m checking out some videos and found your channel. Informative and fun to watch. Thanks!

Thanks for the help. Someone put a Hitachi SU carb on my MG Midget. This video helped me tune it.

The 1st thing to check on SUs is for a vacuum leak at the throttle shafts. Turn engine on spray carb cleaner around the outside of SUs throttle shafts both side both carbs. If the rpms lower or raise your carbs need need throttle bushings. (VERY COMMON!)
The upgrade is replacing the worn brass bushings with sealed bearings installed. ZTherapy has all the carb parts you need. POINT BEING tuning SUs with vacuum leaks suck. Pun intended. :)

In a previous video I show my fix around the leaking shafts. Been there done that.

Good job!.... A few minor points:
    1. Valves and timing should be adjusted before adjusting the carbs as they affect carb adjustment.
    2. When the jet is adjusted all the way up , the top of the jet should be even with the top of the bridge. It's easy to pull off the domes to check this.
    3. If the needle if located correctly in the piston, when the jet is adjusted all the way up and the piston is resting at the bottom of it's travel, the needle should completely block fuel flow from the jet. If the engine still runs with the jets adjusted all the way up, either the jet or the needle are not correct. The shoulder of the needle should be even with the bottom of the piston, not the bottom of the groove in the piston.
    4. Since the choke mechanism moves the jet up and down relative to the needle, check that the choke mechanism is operating correctly such that when the choke is off, the jets return to the same adjusted position each time.

Yeah we can of did the really basics on the carbs we know about the jets and the needle adjustment. We could spend alot of time on all the steps for the carps. We don't really even go into float level adjustment. We all know what a pain that can be.

      Old Busted Hotness
Change the nozzles (jets). They wear past .090” and then the car runs way to rich. Changing needles or mixture adjustments won’t help as the nozzle hole is reamed out. Oo’er missus. Nissan still sell them although they are quite pricey:
      16355-25615 SU Nozzle $139.15ea
x2 = $280. Best “tune up” you ever bought if they are original 40 year old jets. SU’s rule. Peace.

@@alienpoker Ztherapy rebuilds the nozzles (replace the brass tube and orifice ) for $40/pair after you send your old nozzles or with a refundable core charge.

Steven Bauer Cool. Provided the bodies are in decent condition. Yeah, Z-Therapy do good work. I’ve rebuilt SUs myself, it’s not that hard. I can pay for new nozzles with the $$ I save.

Added this as comment to another thread, but a part number may help others, so it deserves it’s own post: Change the nozzles (jets). When the holes wear past .090” the carbs run way to rich. Two words - triple webers! I've run both on Datsuns and the SU's are better than a stock 2 barrel, but not much. Webers completely change the car, its like releasing its inner beast.

I do like the triple carbs but we want to keep it stock as much as possible. I'm thinking about hiding injectors in the su carbs and installing a cpu on the motor.

Think there is An Intake for Triple SU' s ,Which Would Be Cheaper Than WEBERS,Not Sure of Price,My Mech.in ATL.When I Had My 280,Might Be Aware Of Where Used Intake for Triple SU' s Would Be.Course U Would Also Need an Addit.SU.Triple SU' S Would Be Easier to Tune ,Than Triple Weber's.

@@edcain3676 I know this is an old thread but I have just changed my 260Z to triple SUs and also 6 branch exhaust manifold and I'm loving the improvement in the car. They are second hand SUs so I will be getting rebuild kit for them but so far I'm very pleased with the result and as for the cost it's 1/3 the price of triple Webbers, not to mention the now unique look of the engine bay.

#1. AMP gauge is screaming HELLOOO. #2. Carb piston ck done with the dampner unscrewed is pointless. #3. Float levels is the first place to start on carbs. #4. Book smart techz are the worst mechanicz im the field. #5 Get a balance tube that has a PCV before you blow your motor. #6 Your oil filter is not working due to high suction with no blow by crankcase. #7 Look up #6 lol good luck. #8 Love your song LEAH tommy tutone

YIKES!!! Your FUEL RAILS are missing and your aftermarket GLASS FUEL filter is being smacked by your throttle linkage at the fire wall. Hopefully this is a work in progress and the factory steel fuel rails and filter and fuel system has been returned to factory parts and specs. Im a Z guy and you have a 1st gen Z which is RARE and before you do ANYTHING else fix the fire hazard brother!

    • @oldbustedhotness5994
      @oldbustedhotness5994  5 років тому +2

Yes I did see that the fuel filter was getting hit by the linkage and is fixed. As far as all the stock fuel rail. Well let's just say it sucked. I have an electric fuel pump in back with fuel filter. So I just simplified the system. I wanted the cleaner look. Sorry if you don't like it.
