Are Coyotes Dangerous? My Coyote Encounter in Marin Headlands, San Francisco, Dec 2019

I was trail running in in the Marin headlands yesterday (SCA, Bobcat and Julian Trail). I was about 5 miles into an ~8.5 mile loop when I ran into some coyotes. I actually thought these were foxes at first. I stopped for a moment and shot this video.
I was on a bit of a time crunch. I didn’t really want to turn around and go back the way that I came, as it'd make my run longer. I figured these little guys would be scared of me and would run away as I got closer.
That didn’t happen. They just hung out on the trail and watched me intently as I approached them.
I made some loud noises and waved my arms around, but they still didn’t leave the trail… So I left the trail instead and started bushwhacking up the side of a hill.
They started following me up the hill to keep me in their view. They'd disappear from my line of sight for a moment and then reappear, coming around the brush. It was a little creepy. One of them got super close, within 2-3 feet of me.
At that point I was a bit concerned, and considered that rabies could be an issue, so I started yelling and stomping. The coyote closest to me got down on his front paws like a dog ready to play, but then I realized his hair was standing up and he was showing his teeth.
I was convinced that I was about to get bit, and was a little freaked as there’s no one out there and zero cell service.
I decided to back down. I ran into super thick brush, basically stomping over/through bushes, down the hill, and back onto the trail. I started running fast.
They didn’t follow me, but I was looking over my shoulder for the rest of my run.
About a mile down the trail, a bobcat passed in front of me, and at this point I was totally done and ready to be back at the trailhead. I was just waiting for a mountain lion to swoop in and finish me off.
Near the end of the loop, a tiny bunny crossed the trail and scared the hell out of me.

Having been raised on a North Texas cattle ranch before it became citified back the 1970s if you please, we constantly ran into coyotes and never had issues. Never feared them but always respected them as wild animals. Gave them their space.

I trail run in San Diego and see Western coyotes all the time. Sometimes we watch each other for a while out of curiosity, but then I just keep running and they run away. I also run with pepper spray in one hand and a stun gun in the other for personal protection, but that's more for humans than critters. The only wild animal I'm truly scared of in our local backcountry are mountain lions. I saw one once years ago, but it ran off too. Still, I'd never, ever risk chasing after one!

During all of my studies of coyotes I've found that they've been known to be very, VERY tech savvy, but never aggressive enough to kill a person. I blame the man's death on the obvious one on the trail. The man encountered 3 types of animals on the trail; he passes the coyotes fine, a wildcat runs away from him, but only 1 scared him.

Coyotes reside in San Francisco too. Around 20 year ago, a few were seen on camera crossing the Golden Gate Bridge from the Marin Headlands. I golf at Lincoln Park at Lands End, a wooded area on the coast near the bridge. There once was a big gopher problem there, not any more! If you play in the late afternoon, or dusk, you'll see the alpha male out looking for a quick bite. I live in North Beach and they reside on Telegraph Hill as well. They feed on the huge rats late at night that have lived here since day one. A coyote was seen near a children's playground in Golden Gate Park, so the Ranger's hunted them down and eradicated them. They are back and tolerated so far. Never think they are pets, or cool to mingle with. They are wild animals and are very crafty to get their prey. They'll eat our garbage too. Never feed them, just like bears!

I live in south Florida and came up with the best way to ward these coyotes off so they’ll never come back. First off, I never go for a walk without a few packs of firecrackers on me and a hood lighter. When I see them hanging around I start walking towards them, light the firecrackers and throw them in their direction….watch them run. If i see one in the back yard….more firecrackers get tossed at them. I did that for a few weeks every time I saw them and haven’t seen any coyotes around my street for over a year now. I have not had to pull my gun once….a pack of lit firecrackers scares the crap out of them.

There was a woman killed a few years ago by coyotes- in Canada. It is unusual for them to attack humans, but not unheard of. One coyote will lure larger dogs away from their yards to where the pack is hidden. They will stalk and grab smaller dogs and cats. Coyotes and wolves have started mating and they are much more dangerous than the standard coyote. They have no fear of humans and have the greater size. I would be wary of them. There is no way I would run alone without some kind of defense.

Those coyotes that killed here were said to be coyote Woolf hybrids in that area so they had that boldness and lack of fear like a coyote but power and size closer to a wolf. She was alone for a long time on the hiking trail and they did find her alive but because of her wounds she bleed to death on the way to the hospital.
On the other some my neighbors used to ha a coyote dog hybrid that was rescued as a pup. It was their most gentle well behaved dog. Totally safe with their cats and kids and passed away due to old age without any incident in its life. I loved that dog.

The topics of coyotes came up with a repair guy at my house a few years back. The topic came up because we were having issues with pets disappearing in the neighborhood because there was a bumper crop of coyotes and he told me that he was stalked once by coyotes when out hunting. There were several of them - he called them a pack, and they were very thin and hungry. They were not after him but the hunting dogs with him and they were quite aggressive - he had to yell and run them off several times, but they would regroup and stalked him again. He gave up on hunting and back tracked to the truck and left for the safety of the dogs.
I can imagine a group / pack of desperately hungry coyotes might be dangerous to humans, especially children and older / more feeble people in an isolated situation.

Coyotes are harmless to adults. Kids, cats, and lapdogs might have an issue. We have large dogs that get mauled from time to time in Texas according to a vet I know, but it's not common. I've lost dogs and cats to predators, but that's life in the wild. Best to know what you might run into before you go and be able to identify them.
All wildlife can be dangerous of course. I never thought much of the feral hogs being a danger until a lady in Anahuac, TX was killed and eaten -- in her driveway.

A lone coyote was at the beach area where there’s a rustic campground located across the street. My dog noticed him running up and down a wooed hillside trying to get his attention, which he had. Silas was transfixed by watching him. When I noticed it was running backup the wooded hillside. I thought it was a deer until seconds later it came down the hill and stood in the dirt road looking at us from across the street. Silas chases most everything, but it didn’t chase the coyote. It took off soon after and was gone.

A pack of coyotes killed a young woman hiker in Nova Scotia a few years back, so yes, they can be dangerous. One coyote might not be a lethal threat to an adult human being, but a pack of them is a different situation. I'm a dog lover, so I understand why people like coyotes. They look just like dogs. They're beautiful, but they're NOT dogs, and people should have a care. Take a stout stick walking and some pepper spray.

Until development started encroaching on their territory, it was assumed coyotes were skittish creatures. Now that more people are in their areas, their true nature has come to light. They're bold, confident and not scared by much of anything. They'll go out of their way to pursue and attack even large dogs and also people in broad daylight, rabid or not, alone or not. In other words, this behavior is not atypical and by no means indicates they've encountered humans before. We thought we knew their nature, but were sorely mistaken.

Two coyotes can take down a man, but even a good stick and a little focus can deter that (hint; jab, don't whack, then whack after a few jabs...) The coyotes just need to be one on either side of you, and if you don't have a stick or something better, then you have to try kicking and screaming. I once had to fight off and attacking dog while jogging, it was the focus and left hook that sent him running (he had already bit me once).

Coyotes are changing behaviors now, they are not afraid of humans like before since some know they will not get shot so they are extra dangerous. I confronted two so close within an arm's length and slowly walked backward. Be careful out there and definitely leave soon as possible if there is a pack.

There is a very densely wooded area next to a small River where I fish and camp sometimes. One night I was fishing for my dinner hadn't caught anything yet when I felt like I was being watched I slowly pretended to reach for my tackle box to get more bait and as I did I turned and scan the tree line around me. I saw one single coyote just by maybe 10 ft in back of me just sitting there watching me I started talking to it and told it I hadn't caught anything yet and when I did I would share it sat there watching me fish for a good half an hour it came a little bit closer maybe 7 ft away. I then hooked a fish and when I got it up I took it off the hook and I said here you go buddy and I tossed it about 3 ft in front of the coyote then nonchalantly turned my back on her and we baited my hook and started fishing again. She came and picked up the fish after it stopped flopping around whined at me as if to say thank you and trot it off into the trees.

I saw a video of one playing with a bigger dog in an Arizona neighborhood. Super cute, came when the woman called it though she wisely backed behind her gate when she realised that was stupid of her. Saw another one of a coyote playing with a cat, letting it get some "attacks" in. Obviously this one was raised in captivity. Then another wild one that played with a black german shepherd for years until she was run over by a snowmobile and the owner of the dog had to put her down. Probably wanted to mate with him.

That is the big question. I could only find one book on the topic. Generally, they don't harm humans. However, if sick or rabid, they have been known to attack. With dogs, coyotes can be like wolves...sending in one to entice it out where others are waiting to ambush.

I was walking on a “bike” trail (people and dogs walk on the trail too) along a creek and saw a coyote standing a few feet from the trail. It was dusk, just getting dark. I slowly approached the coyote and told the coyote it’s okay. I took out my camera and snapped a photo of the coyote. He didn’t even look at me but was looking in the distance. He was probably stalking a rabbit. 🤷‍♀️
The coyote wasn’t afraid of me and I wasn’t afraid of the coyote. I kept walking toward my house, occasionally looking over my shoulder to see if he was following me but he didn’t follow me.
I didn’t want to be out there after dark not because of the coyotes but because of the homeless people in the area.
