Butch Lindley was a well known and very popular southern driver that used to haul to Oxford, Maine to run the Oxford 250 in the 70's and early 80's. He was one of the best ever.
The sound of the suspension failing and hitting the wall was sickening to hear. What a shame that such a great driver was lost. Those were some beautiful late models, too.
Saw Mr Butch at Greenville Pickens Speedway when a child. They did rides with the kids once a year the kids piled in the car with the drivers. I actually rode with Butch sitting in passenger side window., remembering it all these years later. Butch was the deal !!! Saw his son Mardy run there also. Both were Greenville Pickens Speedway Champions. Loved Butch Lindley do what he loved to do.
Back then that angle of impact was almost worse than right front first. He hit so hard it’s insane. What’s even worse was the fact that it happened so fast he didn’t even have a chance to try and control the car- if he even could at that point.
t absolutely belongs here and everywhere it can be posted. Motorsports is a dangerous sport and all of us who partake know what could happen. Safety has come along way since 1985 and this probably would not happen today. This is a learning tool for all. You chose to watch it and as far as I can tell you were not forced to do so. What did you think the outcome was going to be? Granted the Heading could have been worded better.
I had not saw this video till now , my dad took us kids to kingsport speedway in late 1970s .Butch made some pictures with us , he was a super nice man ! He won alot of races there as well . That was the best racing I ever saw , looking back now as old man. ALL the big names raced there , was called late model sportsman.Alot of the drivers are gone now 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
A few of us that were there at GPS and saw Butch. Just hearing he was going to cup with Larry McReynolds, Hawkins Nascar Team which became Kenny Berstein, with sponsor Quaker State, but this tragedy happened, and he didn't get to realize his dream. He went out with his boots on ( an old saying you went you went out on the road with your boots on performing ) and he loved it and had in his mind about the opportunity of going to cup.
He was supposed to drive that summer with Larry McReynolds as his crew chief in the cup series . And he couldn't after this. He was a great on the short tracks
@@lordmatthewanunnahybrid1356 I watched Butch and would have loved to have seen him in cup. Tremendous driver and person. The car he was driving that night was owned by Neil Bonnett. Your comment about McReynolds and a few others brought back some memories and a tear. Be sure to read my story please
I grew up watching Butch race at Greenville-Pickens.I first saw Him race a 57 Chevy against guys like Jack Ingram,Red Farmer plus a lot of local Hot shoes. After moving back home I got to meet Mardy and shared with him my respect for His dad.I don't know why Mardy didn't make it big.
Saw your comment and had to say hello !!!! I too went to GPS, saw Butch run. Dad, mom & I sat in first turn, mid-ways up. My story is in comments. To add to that, I saw Mardy win his championship. Saw Steven Howard win his. I guess my fav two was Butch and Steven, both deceased RIP. Would love a hello. God Bless.
This is very similar to John Nenechek's fatal crash. As a race fan I am so glad to see the saftey improvements. There will never be a foolproof solution for a driver's side impact with a concrete wall. Soft walls do help a lot. Butch was a great driver. I heard about this on the Dale Jr. Download with Larry McReynolds today.
We were told here in Bradenton that his seat was mounted so as to put his head outside the cage. We had the same type thing when Dave steel hit the wall at Desoto that one was also fatal.!
How about mounting the driver's seat closer to the center of the car....maybe offset the engine and drivetrain a bit if need be - just a thought. This issue has been, well, a problem for decades - Joe Weatherly being one of the more prominent people lost. Same cause of death- high speed head impact against against an unyielding object (the wall).
What was that debris that was near the 15 at the end after the wreck? I am also surprised no one seems to mention this race would have ended sooner if the rules were different and the final five laps did not need to be under the green flag.
I have it a guess that Camaro has a 4 link solid axle in the rear, one or more of those links failed under braking causing the axle to set at an angle rather than straight which shot the car into the wall, a heavy impact regardless
nice guess. wiki says indeed it was a trailing arm that had separated. when i was a youngster back in the mid to late 70s i would go to see races at langley speedway in hampton, va. and when mr. lindley made his rare appearances at that track, the energy was electrifying. i saw regulars like tommy ellis and sonny huntchins, and even harry gant and morgan shepherd on rare occasions. this is first i've seen of mr. lindley's fatal crash. i remember that my friend's mom across the street was totally in love with this man. very sad that he died fairly young...i'm older now than he was at his death.
That’s right! It’s like every commenter thinks he died in the crash, but he laid in a coma for all those years before he passed. Very sad situation. He was a good guy! I’ve always felt so bad for his wife, having to deal with him in that condition for so long. RIP Butch!
rick and butch both were in a coma for many years. rick was from my hometown. watched him race many times. saw butch run right before this accident. so sad for both these drivers.
Yes, he was in a coma for a year I think. They transported him to NC where he lived and he never gained consciousness. The said his seat as mounted too far let to take advantage of the left side weight and his head was actally outside the halo and his head slapped the wall! 1986 I think!

Cleetus McFarland bought this track. It would be nice if he could do an event in Butch's memory
Turn three seams to be a problem at this track. There needs to be something there in memory of both Butch and David Steel there.

Glad your still around brother !👍
My Dad used to work with Butch at PW Bell Sign Co., in Greenville, SC. We used to go watch him race at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. Sad to see this!

He was going to tear it up with Larry Mac. Larry Mac may have never teamed up with Senior to help him win Daytona. Wowww.
What a freak accident.

Unfortunately I was at this race, can remember it like it was yesterday
His son Mardy is crew chief for the JRM No. 1 driven by Sam Mayer in the Xfinity series.

as a race driver(dirt modifieds)I know the risk I take everytime I climb into the car,it is dangerous and sometimes fatal
Ummm....ok
What was that debris that was near the 15 at the end after the wreck? I am also surprised no one seems to mention this race would have ended sooner if the rules were different and the final five laps did not need to be under the green flag.
trailing arm if you listen carefully just before he hits the wall you can hear it hit the track. No control of car after that.
Insane thing Dave Steele died in same way
He jumped the start so hard I wonder if that’s what caused something in the rear to break
yes
And he was supposed to drive a Cup car that Larry McReynolds built when he returned from this race down in FL.
Now his son Marty is Sam Mayers crew chief
Rip Butch
Good ole days
HE had been fitted to drive for Carolina Tool with Hawkins NASCAR team, The team which eventually became the Kenny Bernstein Quaker State car.
That was a Neil Bonnet Camaro Butch was driving.

***** rear trailing arm failed. No control at all.
Lindley Crashed In 1985 But Died In 1990

yes it is very dangerous i known butch all my life and his son mardy was a good racer
He died when his head hit the wall, same with Rick Baldwin.
Baldwin Was In Comma For 11 Years, Lindley Passed 5 Years After The Wreck
@@strike_not_found Yeah, I'm saying they didn't die immediately, they died in later years.
rick and butch both were in a coma for many years. rick was from my hometown. watched him race many times. saw butch run right before this accident. so sad for both these drivers.
Think the drive shaft broke
no the trailing arm broke put
ting it into the wall!
Wait did he die?
Easy Pete this crash put him in a coma and would die five years later after never regaining consciousness
Window Net Failed And He Hit The Wall With His Head
Yes
no, was in a coma for 5 years and never woke up. died in 1990 from pneumonia.
Drive shaft turned him into the wall
trailing arm broke.
Have the stock car mag telling bout butch. Spent a long time at home in a coma.
