WOW! You took me back in time. I use to work at Silver Springs (the Attraction) as a teenager in the 80s. Here's a little history, those monkeys are long descendant of the monkeys brought into Silver Springs during the filming of Tarzan starring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan back in the early 30s... 90 years later the monkeys are still thriving in the area. Back then they also had a speaker hidden deep in the woods that played a sound track of TARZAN yelling, giving the illusion that Tarzan was swinging through the jungle. Thank you for the awesome video. It's been a few years since I have been over that direction. We do have a few more crystal clear rivers up this way to explore... The Rainbow River (which too use to be an attraction in the 70s) and Crystal River (come swim with the manatees). Happy to hear you're enjoying this beautiful state.
@@davecassady7468 Correct on both. Here's another fun fact. Ross Allen use to live right behind the old "Six Gun Territory Attraction" which was just west of Silver Springs on Hwy 40 and his neighbor was Maureen O'Sullivan (Jane from Tarzan), That attraction is long gone. There's been quite a few movies made @ Silver Springs.
@@timfields6130 Ross's granddaughter Marthalynne Allen is on Facebook & is quite active on the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings FB group page. Marjorie once went on a rattlesnake hunt w/ Ross.
Really enjoy how the hiker/travel community embraces Florida in time. It's never anyone first option but cool how pleasantly surprised people get after taking a look around. Going beyond the stereotypes and discovering gems like Silver Springs with an open mind and heart is what it's all about. Great video, Kelly.
That was a great weekend trip and thank you for taking us with you. Now I want to go there it looked like a great place to have some nice outdoors fun. Stay safe and have a nice week ahead. God bless
So this past week, I watched your "camping out at the hospital during the hurricane" video. I also work for a hospital system - in Ocala! So I really enjoyed your video. Imagine my surprise when I realized this was also you! Now you're hanging out in my area! I live in the county to the west of Ocala/Marion County now, and I commute in to the west side of Ocala. However, I used to live just off of Baseline Rd (aka CR 35, the road that intersects with Hwy 40 in Silver Springs), literally less than a 5 minute drive from Silver Springs. You ate at Mojo's! Great food! Glad you experienced it. :) There also used to be a water park at the old Silver Springs amusement park called Wild Waters. Unfortunately, they closed it down a few years ago. Love going there as a teenager, and loved taking my daughters and then grandkids there, in addition to the park itself. I hope you visited the little museum while you were there. If not, plan a time to come back. :)
Those tostadas looked so yummy! I’m going to put that on my grocery list this week. James is a keeper, too! That’s super thoughtful. Looks like a great mini adventure
Nice!! I recommend Homosassa Springs if you're wanting to see manatees. There are also monkeys on Monkey Island. It's close to Crystal River as well which is great for kayaking too. Three Sister's Springs is pretty. Not sure how long you'll be in FL but our colder months of Jan. and Feb. are a really good time to catch manatees in springs and the runs. Kayaking the Weeki Wachee River could be a good opportunity to spot one too. Good luck!! 😁
Glad to see you enjoying my back yard! We live 1 1/2 miles up C-35 from Silver Springs, used to hear the concerts they had there from our back yard pool deck. We had yearly passes for the torn down Wild Waters attraction that our son used to frequent when he was a kid. Mojo's is the bomb! Some of those monkeys venture out and dumpster dive at night, seen them running across Baseline Rd {C-35} more than once.
The area you pulled your boat out is where we put in. You go about a quarter of a miles south and then you turn right for silver springs or left for the ocklawaha. It takes about 3 hours to get to the head spring, since your battling the current, but its an easy float back. Its a lot cheaper that paying at the spring. You should get to know the natives because we live here. If you want to see manatees check out crystal river, put in at the boatyard, then paddle over to the three sisters spring.
All those years ago when I was in Florida, I would have driven right through Ocala and that was the most southern place I was in Florida so I was right there and had no idea there was something this fantastic just off the main highway, had I only known ! . As to the camping aspect though when you were there, that would be some struggle to camp with that heat and humidity.
You are really close to where I grew up in Gainesville, we used to visit Silver Springs all the time and even did scout camp-outs there. It was not a state park back then (early 70s). They used to have "glass bottom boats" that were a main attraction. I was always told that the monkey's were brought in for one of the first Tarzan movies that was filmed there and they couldn't catch them when the filming was done. You should go a bit east on that same road to Juniper Springs (on the Florida trail also). Juniper Springs has a really long jungle type canoe run. Would need to be shuttled from the end since it is miles away down the run.
Kelly, I highly recommend trying "Captain Ron's All Natural Insect Repellent". It really works. NO Deet, made from all Natural Botanical Oils, it smells pleasant, and no chemicals. I do suggest shaking bottle up before each use to mix the oils and a little does go a long way. I do a lot of night fishing along mangrove covered coastal waters and it works. Repels No-See-Ums too.
This may be one of my favorite videos you have posted! Amazing video and such a variety of the critters there! On my bucket list for sure when visit a friend down in FL.
What a great trip ❤️👣. Love your videos they are always so beautiful. Stay clear of the monkeys. They have herpes. Your car camping was cool. I've hiked Ocala Florida trail a few t times and gone by Silver springs but never stopped in. Looks like I need to go now. 😎 Been watching you FT hike. I'd like to complete it but it's the wrong time of year for me. I hike June July Aug Sept mostly. Be safe ~ Mad Rat
I camp in my Subaru all the time. I usually don't have a bug problem so I sleep with the windows down and I leave my hatch open. I just use my Thermo Rest under me and unzip my sleeping bag and just pull it over me like a quilt. I also use a big down pillow. It's very comfortable and I have been doing it for 10 years. geek
Hey Kelly, awesome video. What a cool place to explore with super clear water and all the different creatures to see. I was really hoping you would see a manatee but like you said in the end, it gives you a reason to go back. Oh, and after 40 years working as a Park ranger in a camping park I agree that full moons bring out the crazy in people. :)
You need a Honda Element if you can’t get your Land Rover rebuilt! You should check out some of the conversions and build outs that people do with them. Some people call them Hotelements!
Crazy stuff happens in Retail when there’s a full moon too! Those love bugs just love you! Looks like the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland! The only difference is that the animals are real!
I just thought of something Kelly that may or may not be as common as it was when I was around the Daytona area and assume other cities in Florida also would have a similar theme. Pink Flamingos on peoples lawns and in one case I counted at least 25 of them on one persons small lawn ... " I have more plastic on my lawn then anyone else" status symbol ? LOL. I think sooner rather then later Kelly you will have to do a video of shots of peoples lawns and video yourself rushing through the isles of Walmart with a cart to the "Flamingo section" and feverishly throwing as many Flamingo's into your cart as possible. James may think you have finally lost it completely, but that's ok 😂
I literally live 2 minutes away from silver springs lol. they always tell you to make sure not to feed the monkeys because they WILL get aggressive and jump into your boat when you stop.
What an amazing, fascinating area! Over here, on the other side of the US, we hear a lot about "Florida", but from all the cool areas you've shown us in the last few videos I can see why people live there =)

Those lovebugs are annoying and they make a mess of your car. Next time you're at the beach, bring a plastic bucket with ya and I'll tell ya why. If there's seaweed floating in the water, then fill the bucket about a third to half way with water. Then place the bucket in the water and let it float there. Then carefully pick up the seaweed and shake it over the bucket and see what falls into the bucket. Sometimes you'll get baby Crabs, baby fish, and all kinds of baby sea life that will fall into the bucket.
