Imagine if we didn't have the thermometer or the character shivering and you just died. That is what i feel this stat is currently like. We can't feel what our virtual character feels, thus we need indicators. Or else people are just going to think it's a bug in the game.
The only reasoning I can find for this stat would be to better simulate the functions of armor (this case just the helmets). Health alone might not be a good indicator for the amount of damage you can take, as a shot to the head would do a lot of health damage in a more "simple game". When you have the WOBONE the damage caused can be better regulated as you can tank more shots towards the head without dying (from health loss) but you will eventually die from the shear trauma of being hit to the head that many times (while wearing a helmet ofc.). This allows the player to survive additional shots to the torso, legs or other areas without dying due to health loss because the WOBONE stat has taken the vast majority of the beating when the person was shot to the head and survived because he/she was wearing a bullet proof helmet. I don't know if I am making any sense, but that would be my logical reasoning for this stat - to simulate the effects of armor (helmets) better without messing with the characters overall health.
The skull breaking leading to death makes sense but the health rule I guess is to simulate repeated bran injury where your body heals but the brain takes longer? I am not so sure because that sounds like it could be simulated by slower skull regen. All I can say is perhaps they did it that way to knock out two birds with one health stat being skull fracturing and comas. While both technically have the chance to not kill you, they just treat it as that since you likely aren't waking up even if a miracle happens.
It's more immersive as a hidden mechanic. Recovering fully from a concussion takes a long time, and the concussed person may feel fine even though they aren't fully recovered yet

Concussion. If you get hit in the head with a concussion, it’s much worse than recovering from the concussion and getting hit again. If however you receive multiple concussions in life, it does lead to mental impairment and you can die from trauma/impact to the head.
@@grantfreeman5327glad to hear. If you research concussion online you’ll see that medical professions recommend not engaging in sport for up to a week after a concussion. It is why rugby/football players are removed from the game after a Head clash. You can take a knock to the head and be “stunned” without a concussion. It’s why in boxing the referee will let the boxer have a 10 count to sand up and then must respond to the ref and have strength in their hands before continuing. If they can’t do that, the referee must call the fight over. It can be confusing to those who don’t understand the rules why a conscious man who is standing has been deemed unfit to fight, but it’s about preventing them dying on the spot or permanent injury.
the 10 percent of health thing is really unintuative and unrealistic. so if you have full health, once your head health drop below 10 you die, but if you only have 10 health somehow your head need to drop below 1 for you to die, is this really "intentional" as they said???

your explanation of when head health is fatal is not accurate. i don't know where you got that quote about 10% of health from but it is wrong. in the head class there is fatalinjurycoef=0.1 which is applied to head health alone, nothing to do with global health. player head health is 33 so 0.1*33 = 3.3 therefore when head health is below 3.3 it is fatal. at 5:15 you say that the player dies because head health went below 5 when the player was at 50 health, that is not true. the player died because head health went below 3.3 because you shot the player when it already had 23 head health, if you repeat the test with the player at 33 head health it will survive that headshot. edit: I see what has happened now, the quote is a poorly-phrased comment from Geez which you have misinterpreted. What Geez meant was: When head health is below 10% of [maximum head health], player dies (global health becomes 0).
Hey Wobo, you do great work. I love you all day long, all day strong. FYI though, atleast on xbox the campground cabins windows are broken, I tried shooting zombies tonight through 1 window and 0% of clear + direct heads hots did 0 damage. About a week ago I had an issue with grenades and a gentlemen that kept begging me not to kill him. I unfortunately had a few grenades and I was desperate, fortunately for him, after I through 2 grenades into the window perfectly, he survived and still had enough fight in him to kill me. Either way, on xbox or atleast this update.... I am absolutely not relying on windows anywhere. Love you brother!
I dont think its confusing at all. Imagine you took multiple hits to the head. Sometimes you might feel fine but you are concussed. Protect your brain in rl. Protect it in dayz. It makes sense
IMO, the feedback is "getting into any form of combat is inherently [edit: potentially] lethal." As it is IRL, one punch can kill. Personally, I like it. :)
My friend accidentally 1 punch killed a guy we were teaming up with a good 4 years ago. He was indeed full health and kit. I assume now he proably had just gotten attacked by wolves and by the time we met up his health was full or close to it but his wobone must have have been in rough shape. Lol
I think the devs tried to implement some sort of backface deformation into the game. So when a bullet hits a helmet and the helmet stops it because of the energy the helmet gets dented in. I think they wanted to make that if you get shot into the head and wear a helmet that it damages the skull and not just the health bar. So the next rounds will have enough energy to deform the helmet enough to kill you or the sheer head trauma kills you. I think this is kinda realistic because most bullets have about 300 to 2000 Joule and the helmets are usually just made out of kevlar, aramid or metals and even if the bullet gets stopped the trauma to the head is still immense depends on what caliber
WOBO the legend of DayZ. Awesome content as usual. About this stat... Its realistic in a way, that you can break your skull irl. as well, but having no feedback is "meh..." as you said.
This is the reason why I always wear a motorcycle helmet and a ski mask. I was attacked by several wolves one day (7 of a pack of 10 attacked me) and noticed only my ski mask took damage. It makes no sense how their damage bypasses the helmet and goes straight to the mask, but it does.
The first thing that came to mind was the Deus Ex health mechanic. Each limb has its own separate health and downsides if they reach zero. If torso and head health reaches zero, it's death, cause you know, your important organs are there. If arms reaches zero, very bad aim, melee damage is heavily reduced and just bad combat performance. If one leg is heavily damage to zero, you're a slow limping pace, if both are gone, you're force to crouchwalk/crawl. So i think they want to imply limb health with the wobone, but can't fully do it like how tarkov or Deus ex does it better.
that's interesting, i once died in tisy back in 0.61 or 0.62 version, we were a group of 4, pretty much fully geared and full life, full blood, full stomachs etc.. there comes this zombie waving fists at me, hits me in the head and the screen goes black immediately. i thought i am unconscious, but he literally killed me there. i probably killed 50 zombies that day in a melee fight, all of the punches they hit on me must have added up to get me killed like that. i always suggested it was something like that you explained in the video, some stat or something that was reached my character could not take anymore. i always thought it might have been too much shock damage.
Though I agree it should be visualized for the player somehow, I think it's a good thing overall. Concusion and other damage to the head can easily kill you without previous warning irl as well, so it's good. I understand that sweaty players are not fans of "random" or hidden stats which they cannot abuse the shit out of, but that's how real life is, and DayZ is trying to come close to it, which I always welcome.
there should be more things in the game to weed out the sweats.. theyre thinking at a money standpoint though. wish they would make it harder to raid and add more kinds of walls for base building
Some mechanics that may or may not improve this. Firstly as your head bone stat (hereafter refered skull health) decreases, your vision becomes more and more blurry. Sounds become more muted and muffled. At low skull heath, (10-25%) you can't reload or craft. The skull health is more quick to heal from damage. Healing at the same rate as the other limbs if blood is high. Wolf bites and infected attacks cannot damage the skull if you are wearing a helmet, and will damage the helmet instead. Does not apply to all melee weapons. Melee attacks deal skull damage based on the weapon used, a good rule of thumb is that blunt weapons deal more than sharp weapons. Fists cannot damage the skull if the user is wearing a helmet. Explosions, and crashing a vehicle traveling at high speeds can deal Skull damage, regardless of helmet. Bullets only inflict skull damage if they do not penetrate the helmet, and they also inflict far less damage to the skull. Skull damage can only kill you if it hits zero, if the original condition is met, you are knocked unconscious instead. Not good, but not instant, unexplained death.
I got burned out and stopped playing Dayz when they added chainmail armor. Learning that this is a new intended feature makes me glad I stopped playing and will keep me from returning.
It's essentially concussion. The head needs far longer than other parts of the body, to fully recover. If concussion is not fully healed and treated then you can very easily die. That's what this stat represents. Hope that helps.
this is probably old legacy stuff that got forgotten and never updated You most likely sparked a design question in the DayZ team to know if they will keep it and how to feedback it if the do You have to remember that they are working on a 10 year old code AND script base, a lot of the team has left and that means a lot was forgotten to time
My only problem with this is they are trying to borrow the health and limb mechanic from tarkov when their armor system is borderline warzone level basic. They should wait to add this stat until they add a ui like tarkov where you can black a limb/break both legs and arms. Then this insta death makes sense because if your head/chest is blacked you should insta die from anything basically.
Dude you're totally right, like why would I die if I get shot in the head and why is it so weak it's not like it's my body's main operating system and it's only covered in about a half inch of bone
i think the hidden wobone stat represents unseen damage to the brain like internal bleeding, massive swelling, or the skull fracturing and sending the shards into the brain.
it's a concussion right? get bonked in the head real hard and the lights go out permanently. they should probably add and indicator for that or make you feel dizzy like when it's low
Has this stat been in the game for a long time? A group of friends and I have coined a specific house in Lavonia the "One Punch" House, because we were traveling down the road it was on one day, and as a joke one of us punched another one, and he instantly died. One punch to the head and he was completely dead. This would have been 3ish years ago now. but we never understood what happened. just *Thwomp* "... Im dead"
I knocked a full health guy out with 1 heavy punch a few days ago, I also found out I can press sprint aim with my fists and normal punch for a running punch without running l
Them constantly screwing with settings back and forth instead of adding new content or improving the game is why I stopped playing. Sad it's never changed, it could be so much more. Played since Arma, RIP
You ever hear how boxers and MMA fighters lose their "chin" after a time in their careers? It can even seem to happen between fights where suddenly they can't take punches like they used to, even from opponents with less power than those who've failed to rock them before? My conjecture would be it's to simulate that, for realism. Even the mystery of the mechanic could facilitate that, as it subtly incentivizes players who've been alive longer to avoid fights rather than to simply strategize around it.
Player dying when head health goes below 10% of global health is strange to me. So higher global health leads to death more quickly when the head is damaged? I have no idea what the devs are trying to achieve here.
Only sense I can make is when at peak health, you'd be able to withstand and recover from a head trauma, But, lower health will decrease your ability to recover as your body is already struggling to recover in other areas? Kinda like peak health and catching a flu wouldnt effect as bad as having a underlining health issue and then catching a flu. Hits you twice as hard as would mean taking more care?
We really just need a head trauma icon. Something to indicate to the player that head stat is low the same way we get a broken bone icon when bones are broken.
I think i have an easy way to ain this baded on my PVP sniping encounters, This is definitely to prevent people from helmet spamming during sniper encounter Basically its possibile to survie an infinite number of headshots if you have like 50 assault helmets stored in your base and you can just keep peeking out at the raiders and getting headshotted for hours until they get bored and leave and plenty of food and god tier camping spot but qith this new stat none of that matters one bullet can kill you at full health if yove already taken 20 308 to the head over the last 8 hours This new stat means you have maybe a maximum of one full assualt hslmet before you die instead of like 20 and 5 hours of healing
They should make it so you had headaches if your head bone damage was low and it would alter your vision to let you know how in trouble you are, I think that would fix the confusion about it
I’m definitely not a game dev and don’t claim to know better than the devs behind DayZ, but in my opinion it seems redundant and frankly arbitrary to have a hidden hyper-sensitive health bar for your skull that is not only smaller than every other bone stat but is also reactive to your health bar unlike any other bone stat in the game. Seems like a bit of computing power the servers could be using for something else entirely
hi wobo! cool video and useful to me that im creating a mod that touch that "Brain" stuff :p , a question where is it possible to apply those Wired/Highlighted stuff for player? in that sort of debug mode? is only a thing applicable on Client? thanks
if health regens faster than bone health, in theory if bone health is say 10.0001% yoru health and your health starts regening and thus the total bone health while still low drops below 10% total i assume that doesnt kill you
I think this is supposed to represent your character getting a brain bleed, a lot of who get brain bleeds don’t know they have one until it kills them, with the only symptom being an intense headache, I think the devs didn’t want to put in a brain bleed statue effect so they just made it an instant kill. It could also represent something like irreversible brain damage, with the impact killing the player scrambling something important. I have never encountered this knowingly so I can’t comment on it’s effect on gameplay.
Considering there is already a literal brain hit box designed to insta-kill you when shot in the head, this stat seems very redundant to me and probably shouldn't be in the game.

@@WOBOwhile I think this is intended to somehow replicate either concussion or maybe brain injury/bleeding, I had another random unrelated thought....is the heart attack coding still in the game, or has that been completely removed?
@@johnnygeorgopoulos4072 Still there last I checked, but looks to be just legacy code now
Imagine if we didn't have the thermometer or the character shivering and you just died.
That is what i feel this stat is currently like. We can't feel what our virtual character feels, thus we need indicators.
Or else people are just going to think it's a bug in the game.
I have had the blurry vision/ unfocused vision after two uncons from gunshots. As well as being hit a couple of times by zeds.
And hospitals kinda don't exist you'd have almost no chance of survival
There must be some kind of indicator, such as head injury. I've already died from this several times and felt perplexed
Yeah like the concussion symbol in Siberia mod!
It's more immersive as a hidden mechanic. Recovering fully from a concussion takes a long time, and the concussed person may feel fine even though they aren't fully recovered yet
@@creamcorn999just shut up please, no one wants to randomly die of a heart attack or a brain hemorrhage for the sake of "immersion" either. imagine having a 0.001% chance of taking a step wrong snd twisting your ankle.. how immersive 🤡

The game is so old, yet we still need to explain the basic stats and mechanics. That shows once again how detailed it is😮

it does not make any sense, specially the 10% part, so like, if wobone stat is at 9 and my health to 100% (somehow) I would die but if my health is a 20% and my wobone stat is a 3 I would stay alive? You have more chances of surviving when you have low health, that is stupid
my thoughts exactly
Never though of that. Keeping lower global health increases survival chances in some cases vs head shots. The devs should look into that
Concussion.
If you get hit in the head with a concussion, it’s much worse than recovering from the concussion and getting hit again. If however you receive multiple concussions in life, it does lead to mental impairment and you can die from trauma/impact to the head.
damn i learned something
Makes perfect sense if someone crushes your head you should be dead bars. The wolves one tap is crazy thoo
If a wolf 1 taps your face....your done. Seems realistic to me.
Ive never been tapped by a wolf and had plenty attack me without a helmet ig im just lucky?@@realSOLowKEY
I’m surprised after 2500 hours. I’ve never had this happen to me. At least that I’m aware of.
I’m around 4000 and I’ve only witnessed this maybe 3-5 times
I had to think about it, wolves.
the 10 percent of health thing is really unintuative and unrealistic. so if you have full health, once your head health drop below 10 you die, but if you only have 10 health somehow your head need to drop below 1 for you to die, is this really "intentional" as they said???
This makes alot of sense... Glad you brought this to light.
*Bone health needs to be added to the stats where health blood food and water are*
Thx for the update, im teaching a friend the game and hes enjoying it so far but we had a wolf run in which was intensified bc we leaving a mili zone and the howl sound bugged and cut off almost as soon as it started, would have been hilarious to try to explain this to him if it happened, luckily we made it to a house outside about 1.3km away and we got there right as the wolves caught up on us and we mag dumped our pistols into them until they ran off, so far thats the closest hes seen to combat in dayz, hes gonna have alot to learn and i will definitely send him your way someday
I was attacked by wolves a couple of days ago. what I don't get is how they hit you on the head only. you'd think they'd do leg damage first at least.
or that they would go for the arms like in red dead
Maybe its to simulate concussions/head trama? Kinda like how u can slip and hit ur head and just knock yourself out or if u fall at the right angle and hit ur temple u can die, somtimes u just get unlucky
that was my thought also - but the 10% of health rule makes little to no sense though
I feel like its a little much especially with the six punches can kill you
@@rebelbro1207 there are many cases of people dying from only one punch IRL. Any amount of head trauma is dangerous

Very true, very true.
Gonna use this as a excuse as to why I lose melee fights against freshes despite shooting them multiple times
your explanation of when head health is fatal is not accurate. i don't know where you got that quote about 10% of health from but it is wrong. in the head class there is fatalinjurycoef=0.1 which is applied to head health alone, nothing to do with global health. player head health is 33 so 0.1*33 = 3.3 therefore when head health is below 3.3 it is fatal. at 5:15 you say that the player dies because head health went below 5 when the player was at 50 health, that is not true. the player died because head health went below 3.3 because you shot the player when it already had 23 head health, if you repeat the test with the player at 33 head health it will survive that headshot.
edit: I see what has happened now, the quote is a poorly-phrased comment from Geez which you have misinterpreted.

Crazy , thanks for all you do for the community 🙏
IMO, the feedback is "getting into any form of combat is inherently [edit: potentially] lethal." As it is IRL, one punch can kill. Personally, I like it. :)
This would simulate your skull literally breaking and not being able to hold the squishy parts it contains imo
Good point. This could be the reason for it to exist
Yeah I don’t think it’s outrageous… people have been one hit killed by punches…
@@jeffheyer7783 +1
Me and my friend have been encountering wolves with no howls pretty often
2:54 is an awesome transition
Me and friends would get so anxious and usually upset bc we all knew this was a thing but we couldn’t help but thwack each other every now n again
Transition in the hunting pub was very cool
that's interesting, i once died in tisy back in 0.61 or 0.62 version, we were a group of 4, pretty much fully geared and full life, full blood, full stomachs etc.. there comes this zombie waving fists at me, hits me in the head and the screen goes black immediately. i thought i am unconscious, but he literally killed me there. i probably killed 50 zombies that day in a melee fight, all of the punches they hit on me must have added up to get me killed like that. i always suggested it was something like that you explained in the video, some stat or something that was reached my character could not take anymore. i always thought it might have been too much shock damage.
It would be pretty cool to combine a low wobone stat with some sort of concussion type feedback, this sort of feels like a half implemented feature
It likely is to represent blunt damage or cave of the skull or something, as for why its hidden and unable to be avoided idk.
What you going to do, splint your cranium? 😆
I think the bone stat acts as survivor wear&tear. Stops people living "forever" essentially. That's just my guess.
Well just when you think you know everything lol Thanks for letting us know Mate much appreciated
They should add a headache icon that gets darker the 'worse your headache gets'
Literally happened to me the day after the update released I was confused how they did over 50% damage in one hit
It's essentially concussion. The head needs far longer than other parts of the body, to fully recover. If concussion is not fully healed and treated then you can very easily die. That's what this stat represents. Hope that helps.
this is probably old legacy stuff that got forgotten and never updated
You most likely sparked a design question in the DayZ team to know if they will keep it and how to feedback it if the do
You have to remember that they are working on a 10 year old code AND script base, a lot of the team has left and that means a lot was forgotten to time
Wolves have NOT howled when attacking me and my friends 5 times in the last week. I believe it is a bug
My only problem with this is they are trying to borrow the health and limb mechanic from tarkov when their armor system is borderline warzone level basic. They should wait to add this stat until they add a ui like tarkov where you can black a limb/break both legs and arms. Then this insta death makes sense because if your head/chest is blacked you should insta die from anything basically.
very good vid as always!
Dude you're totally right, like why would I die if I get shot in the head and why is it so weak it's not like it's my body's main operating system and it's only covered in about a half inch of bone
This finally explains those “Wolves can one tap you if you’re running” theories I think.
i think the hidden wobone stat represents unseen damage to the brain like internal bleeding, massive swelling, or the skull fracturing and sending the shards into the brain.
I wonder if all this “extensive testing” that the gunplay behaves exactly the way it is “supposed to” as well
Awesome love the dayz videos definitely helping the community
it's a concussion right? get bonked in the head real hard and the lights go out permanently. they should probably add and indicator for that or make you feel dizzy like when it's low
The only time I think I have encountered this bug is when I get headshot or I headshot another player. Usually with pistol calibers.
Has this stat been in the game for a long time? A group of friends and I have coined a specific house in Lavonia the "One Punch" House, because we were traveling down the road it was on one day, and as a joke one of us punched another one, and he instantly died. One punch to the head and he was completely dead. This would have been 3ish years ago now. but we never understood what happened. just

I knocked a full health guy out with 1 heavy punch a few days ago, I also found out I can press sprint aim with my fists and normal punch for a running punch without running l
Thank you for these videos WOBO.. You make the best dayz content always keeping me up to date :))
Them constantly screwing with settings back and forth instead of adding new content or improving the game is why I stopped playing. Sad it's never changed, it could be so much more. Played since Arma, RIP
hmm maybe head bone stat damage should have a concussion affect/effect e.g. ears ringing and/or blurry vision idk
It’s either simulating your skull, and it cracking being your death, and or simulating a concussion. Back to back head trauma will kill you.
Player dying when head health goes below 10% of global health is strange to me. So higher global health leads to death more quickly when the head is damaged? I have no idea what the devs are trying to achieve here.
They should add a concussion symbol for when this is in effect.
Only sense I can make is when at peak health, you'd be able to withstand and recover from a head trauma,
But, lower health will decrease your ability to recover as your body is already struggling to recover in other areas?
Kinda like peak health and catching a flu wouldnt effect as bad as having a underlining health issue and then catching a flu. Hits you twice as hard as would mean taking more care?
I see this stat as "concussion", an icon when it is low would be welcome
They really need arm breaks added back and this bug fixed. They cant call this a feature when it had been a bug for so fucking long.
He just said in the video, it was never a bug.
Such a dumb game mechanic, but thank you for shedding light on it wobo
They need to add broken arms to this game. The amount of times I shoot someone in the arm and it does absolutely nothing is ridiculous
PS4 player here. Just had this same thing happen with wolves. No howls or nothing and one bite killed me.
They have a bone head bone stat, they need to have a head wrap you use like the split to do what the splint does for broken legs
We really just need a head trauma icon. Something to indicate to the player that head stat is low the same way we get a broken bone icon when bones are broken.
I think i have an easy way to ain this baded on my PVP sniping encounters, This is definitely to prevent people from helmet spamming during sniper encounter
Basically its possibile to survie an infinite number of headshots if you have like 50 assault helmets stored in your base and you can just keep peeking out at the raiders and getting headshotted for hours until they get bored and leave and plenty of food and god tier camping spot but qith this new stat none of that matters one bullet can kill you at full health if yove already taken 20 308 to the head over the last 8 hours
This new stat means you have maybe a maximum of one full assualt hslmet before you die instead of like 20 and 5 hours of healing
They should make it so you had headaches if your head bone damage was low and it would alter your vision to let you know how in trouble you are, I think that would fix the confusion about it
This is a great idea, taking codeine pills would help this stat increase too.
Ahh this is why my wobone was tingling today
Should show the stat. But I think it’s like a trauma stat. Like I can’t be beat in the head and eat and it heals me completely.
hi wobo! cool video and useful to me that im creating a mod that touch that "Brain" stuff :p , a question where is it possible to apply those Wired/Highlighted stuff for player? in that sort of debug mode? is only a thing applicable on Client? thanks
if health regens faster than bone health, in theory if bone health is say 10.0001% yoru health and your health starts regening and thus the total bone health while still low drops below 10% total i assume that doesnt kill you
The good old “wobone” got me a few times, haven’t had it happen to me since .60 update
Maybe it simulates accumulated damage like how you can die from one too many concussions.
Explains alot lol thanks as always wobo
so cheaters can now one shot you with rubber slugs?
Lost a 3 month char to the bone stat almost a decade ago. Still hurts :/
A good way for the devs to branch the bone stat mechanic to simulate traumatic brain damage
It would be nice to get a bone update lol I like the mechanic overall if it works and can be healed through medicine
