Day Two of my Backcountry Camping canoe trip of the Serpentine Loop in Kawartha Highlands. Although this canoe trip can be completed in a day or two, I took four days to go out and explore this area of Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park.
This was the first time visiting Kawartha Highlands, a provincial park located north of Toronto, in Ontario Canada.

Kawartha Highlands is the largest provincial park south of Algonquin Park and offers a unique backcountry camping experience.
In this video I paddle from Rathbun Lake to Copper Lake. Along the way I traverse two portages, check out a nice waterfall, cook on the open fire, try my luck fishing, film a very nice sunset and share it with a beaver who came to visit my camp.

Ah, there is but I just didn't film them. They were set back from the rest of camp.

Definitely worth it Larry and its nice that when you make a reservation you book a specific site. I could have easily spent a couple nights on both Copper Lake and Serpentine Lake (next weeks video).

Well Jason, this video seals it... I'm definitely taking the boys there next season :) That is a beautiful lake and campsite, I can picture that site being amazingly beautiful on a full moon! Were there any decent places on that site for swimming?
Yes, the one side was open to the larger part of the lake and I think it would be a good place for a dip. The shoreline was mostly rocky but it didn't look like it would be hard on the feet.

How does it compare to Algonquin? Because Algonquin is hard to beat.

Not sure which ones. I mostly wear Fjallraven pants. They're not water proof but dry super fast.

Why do you carry 3 paddles
Great question.
I always carry 2, or at least always carry a spare. This is a new canoe that I just built this summer to my own design. So I'm still testing it out in a variety of conditions. Its handling really well. I've been packing a double blade/kayak paddle (which is why it looks like 3) in case I needed it in strong winds. So far I've only used the double blade once and I don't think I need it. On the last day of this trip I had some really strong head winds and white caps but stuck to the single blade. It was scary, I was afraid, but the canoe performed well with the single blade paddle. On my next trip I've decided to only bring two canoe paddles. A much easier carry.

Funny you should ask... lol. Its holding up really good but I just put on skid plates at the ends. The rocky shores (especially here at Kawartha Highlands) were really wearing it.
