- MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! A special gift for you this Christmas Eve!.. This video is something of a spinoff and/or sequel to the [HOW RAILROADS WORK Episode 4 - The Buffalo Line] Video..
We pick up where we left off at Renovo to see what's left of the once massive PRR shop operations there.. With a new power plant looming in the not-too-distant future, the days may be numbered for what's left of this historic property..
We'll follow a loaded coal train off of the RJ Corman at Keating sporting (2) new AC44C6Ms including #4004 in the Altoona applied special black and gray paint scheme.
And speaking of fancy paint schemes.. From there it's onto Lock Haven, Avis and Newberry Yard in Williamsport to catch some North Shore and SEDA-COG rail action featuring 4 of the 6 North Shore Railroad's Heritage schemes..
Juniata Valley
Lycoming Valley
North Shore
Nittany & Bald Eagle
PLUS Switching at High Steel Structures and a Lycoming Valley interchange move to the NS at Northumberland Yard which will make up future Trains 11A..
CORRECTION: On the last song the artist and song title are wrong.. It should be:

Sorry for the slip-up but what can I say.. I had to have this present gift-wrapped for you so that you could enjoy it on Christmas Day!... Didn't have time to proof-read everything
TRAINS SHOWN IN THIS VIDEO:
1. RJ Corman
2. NS 632
3. Various trains around Lock Haven and Williamsport.
SIZE DOES MATTER.. So Watch it in HD!!
no more 10/11a for a few yr, h53 gets the cars from Enola for all the NSHR rr's that are near Northumberlnad (Norry).
20:58 theres also Stainman in the middle of the yard that cuts up steel rails to put in the cars. i rem the guy we talked to when i worked at LVRR his nick name was booger. so we called them booger cars.
26:55 CP River/CP Linden/CP South Linden all at each end the the Y.
around 31:00 all the passenger cars are in norry along pa 147 right at the borough line in the nshr yard area i think. 32:41 the tiny Newberry RDG station was to your left in the lot with the concrete blocks.
they closed Depot St xing and now a NO horn ordinance is in place. all cuz 1 a hole complained the crews blew their horn too much everytime they were switching tracks at howard st xing.
34:21 outbound LVR1 is no more. NS wanted too much for LVRR/NSHR to use their tracks from Muncy-Norry n back. So h45 comes up from Norry in the late afternoon brings cars for LVRR n drops them off at the siding at S Linden for the LVRR guys the next morn to get. the outbound cars from LVRR to NS are at CP Muncy. what an interesting way to move cars in and out of newberry from ns trains.
very nice ending with Candy Cane Lane! Its a staple in the community.
I opened up my Christmas present early. Thank you very much. I loved it.
That's Ok.. It's the kid in all of us!
Why on earth would 2 people give thumbs down???????
Don't like NS I guess.
Love the flames on 4004... very cool. beats solid black by a mile. Merry Christmas, AC
Merry Christmas, Jim.. I haven't forgotten you.. It's just been a very busy last few days but I'll be in touch either today or tomorrow.
Wow, that was really a great video! Cool seeing the slogan "Bee Line". I remember seeing some yellow locos a few years back near Cincy with that slogan on them. Anyway, Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas, Brian.. Thanks.. Did Jim tell you that we've been talking about my trip out there in 2017?
We have ridden our Ducati multistrada to Renovo a number of times, stay at the sportsmen restaurant and hotel !! 144 north and south from there is a great road !!! 😁😁😁😁🏍🏍🏍🏍🚂🚂🚂🚂🍺🍺🍺 Merry Christmas everyone
The 130-car coal trains originate in Clymer (Indiana County). Their loads are readily identifiable since the cars are loaded using front-end loaders, resulting in uneven load tops. NS delivers a 130-car string of empties to RJCP at Keating, and RJCP takes them to Clearfield. From there they are run as 65-car trains over a two-day spread from Clearfield to Clymer and return. Once the 130 loads are back in Clearfield it's off to Keating for a run down to Baltimore and export overseas.
Why two 65-car trains to and from Clymer? Well, the 14-degree curve at Cherry Tree can't handle much more than 65 loaded cars coming down the hill from Fleming Summit (it's only a 0.8% grade, but apparently that's enough). Too much weight pushing the cars down the hill onto the curve puts too much stress on the outer rail of the curve.
Thank you so much for that inside look at this operation Master Sergeant.. And thank you for you service to our great country.. Air Force Desert Shield/Storm veteran here.
thank you for the info I used to work at the Rushton mine in Clearfield county.
At 20:40 I live in those apartments behind those tankers it fun cause I get to see them move them around 😀
Wow, That old Arby's sign was Awesome. I haven't seen one of those in a long, long time!
Nice thanks for sharing merry Xmas to you as well
awesome video. sweet catch of NS #4004 & #2106 Juniata Valley switcher. very cool. Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays.
Thanks, Phil.. Merry Christmas to you too.. But you left out the RJ Cormans! lol
And the Lycoming Valley and the North Shore!! Making a little too merry are we!! lol Happy Holiday
Trains21 you're welcome
NICE NS 4004
Merry Christmas! Great catches!
Thanks.. Merry Christmas to you too!
Enjoyed everything about your video... music, non train, in depth of the towns, oh and the trains, Thank You. Dick.
7:51 answer to your question? 4; 2 in front and 2 DPU at the rear. BNSF/NS joint trains to South Georgia routinely have around 136 loads and they use that set-up [although I have seen 2 and 1]
Fantastic video Trains21. Lots of great stuff to see. Great catch with NS 4004 and the other AC446M! I managed to see 4002 and 4004 together in NJ when they were sent here on their first assignment after being released into active service. Love the scenes around Lock Haven yard too, those CR boxcars and that Juniata Valley switcher, pretty cool that it's got the PRR Keystone on the front.
I have to say that while the entire video is awesome, I think my favorite parts are the Nittany & Bald Eagle unit switching High Steel Structures, and Newberry Yard. Awesome PRR coaches at 31:44, and I LOVE the paint schemes on Lycoming Valley engines 2011 and 2017...doesn't get much better than that.
Again, fantastic video. I apologize for not commenting lately, been pretty busy...looks like I have some catching up to do :-)
No worries.. Work and/or school must sometimes intrude.. But I thank you for such a thorough and informative comment.. Yeah, I saw that you caught the 2002 and 2004 in your goodbye 2016 video.. A dirty little secret, I had NO IDEA that the 4004 was there.. I stumbled on to it!
That Juniata Valley switcher is an ex-Pittsburgh and Shawmut and I liked the NBER too.. The Williamsport SEDA-COG area is awesome for railfanning, especially in the summer.. If you haven't been out there yet, make it a point to do so..
Also, nice as the Pennsy coaches were, they blocked the view of a new (used) LVRR SD40-2 in blue and yellow.. The only way to get a shot was to trespass so I took the loss that trip.
Merry Christmas!
You, too B!
I used to work for a cable company out of South Williamsport.
Cool, then you remember Summer Street.
Trains21 I didn't do much up there but pick up or drop off cable reels or strand for jobs. Mostly worked in South Jersey. The company built the system down here. Didn't get to see much of the town up there.
Cool RJ Corman Catch! They have another interchange point at Cresson, PA on the PITL so I've seen it too once or twice.
Yeah, I know.. I'll eventually get out there and catch em' in Central PA.
Merry Christmas 🎄
And a very merry to you too sir.
Brrrrilliant😎! A few weeks back I asked for some industrial switching and you have delivered wonderfully👍😊😁😀😍 Howzat for understated? I will probably watch this for hours in the next few months. The way you take us on tours is excellent. I will probably never get to Pennsylvania (have wanted to go since I was 14 - Penn Central days - and am quite a bit older now😫) Anyhow excellent as always and Happy New Year.
Happy New Year to you as well, but never say never.. You may get here one day.. I'm rootin' for you to!
Really, really good, your country really is very beautiful, I really like these videos, the landscapes, the cities, you show the American cities where you walk!
Thanks!
Thank you, Neto!
Awesome video! I was in Renovo in October of 2006 to watch a football game at the high school (the school I lived was playing them). I remember a coal train going by in the middle of the game.
Cool
Great video! Nice to see some railfanning in this part of the state. I'm over in Mill Hall and I've caught a few trains going into Lock Haven but I haven't had much time to sit along the tracks for hours with my camera and tripod. I love that you included driving through towns in your videos, it definitely makes your videos different. Also they must have fixed those signs at 15:10 quickly because I never noticed them.
Thanks Erik.. Yeah, those signs caught me by surprise!! I was like, "What the -- !!"
Those NS units remind me of dragons.
Just realized that I replied to the wrong comment.. What can I say, I've been editing all day and now I'm making rather merry!
Understandable and lol.
This video popped up in my feed again so I couldn't resist watching it a 2nd time. I can't wait to do some railfanning next spring/summer. I've been thinking about heading up to the renovo/keating area and chasing a train down the buffalo line to lock haven.
Thanks Erik.. Just do some research though.. Not a busy line these days.
Excellent video. I enjoyed the visit to North Central, PA and the information on railroading in that area. I've never been to Renovo, but I have been to Lock Haven and Williamsport although not recently. I'm glad to see there is still some industry up in that area. Lastly I enjoyed the Christmas decorations at the end, those folks did a great job of decorating.
Thanks Bill.. Actually, there's quite a bit of industry in the Williamsport/Lock Haven/Avis/Northumberland area.. So much, that NS runs a pair of dedicated trains (10A & 11A) there 5 or 6 days a week to service the region.. Christmas decor on Summer Street is a long time tradition.. So much so that parking on the street is not allowed during the season when the lights are up..
Born in Mill Hall, on back road to Beech Creek, on Bald Eagle Mountain in 1940. Lived just a few feet off the PRR .Watched steamers all day long as soon as I could walk..Still love all the trains.I like to see front to end of the trains.Show just a little of railcars I'm off to find a video with all the train.Wish I would have found these videos before. This video I like. Thank you
And thank you.. I wish I had your memories of this line.
It was nice to see a long coal drag with only 1 car containing graffiti. Great video as I enjoy almost all of your videos. I like to see the engine types posted at the bottom of the screen. Great post production work. However, not too keen on the music. Thanks.
W Rusty Lane in eastern Tennessee (Witherington Place Railroad)
Thanks, Rusty.. I'll certainly take everything that you said to heart!!
I'm really enjoying all Your Vids , most educational and not boring , Yes and I appreciate the commentary and the music , makes for a most interesting Vid/s , And If I haven't told You before I hail from Tasmania , ( Australia's 7th state ) ( , no trains down here , have to go North to see trains and not many of the either ) !
Thanks, Danny.. Never been out your way but hopefully will some day..
when I moved from Renovo to Lock Haven I lived in the Gardens apartments Right behind the LH yard you should come to Williamsport PA during Christmas time I'ma record the train this year but they have a Christmas Train it's So cool and would be an Awesome catch to add to your video collection
Thanks for the info.. I'll definitely try.
good job
Thanks, Sean.. Merry Christmas.
Great musinc choices, thanks! They never seem to be so "hard rock" that they interfere with the main item..the video . Congrats!
Thanks, Ken.. I thought they worked out good too.
See loco 2011 they lock with a padlock? Sound like somewthing they will do in my valley
Nope, that's how most locos are locked but they're not off-the-shelf locks.. They're made specially for the railroad.
Awesome video and great pick-up on some vintage PRR.
Thanks Jim, Glad you liked.
The views of lavishly decorated homes in Williamsport are to die for!
I'll say.. That footage wasn't actually part of the video in the beginning.. I added at the end as bonus footage.
where coal going??
I worked for NS when I lived up there too on the MOW gangs
Cool
And Merry Christmas to you my friend :-)
:-)
Yeah, I guess they do in way!
I hope this could be a new paint scheme.
I think only the first (5) AC44C6Ms are getting it.
Ahh, well that's a bummer.
Nice video! What’s your recommendation on catching some action here?
Nowadays it's difficult as there's not much action on the line.. Maybe find somebody who knows the area you're railfanning and see if they'll chaperone you.
+Trains21 Ok. Thanks!
nowadays No trains go through Renovo I grew up there
it's a town that was Built around the railroad though when was this video taken trains21
This is amazing!!! I had no idea there were other people that were into railfanning around my area!!! Also, what spot was that where you were racing the RJ Corman locos?
Thanks.. The RJ Corman locos were shot at Keating, just a few miles railroad north (compass east) of Renovo, though I'm not sure where your "area" of railfanning is.
Oh I guess just I just mean the buffalo line north of Lock Haven. It seems as though no-one is too familiar with the trains up here
Understood
Music makes a great change , keep it up !
Thanks.
What's the significance of the 'DC to AC' on the side of 4004?
These locos were converted from DC traction to AC traction
+Trains21 I see AC and DC locomotives working together in the same consist. How can they do that without frying the traction motors?
Is old PRR 2106 a NW2?
It's an ex-Pittsburgh & Shawmut SW9.
