    100 Chain
    Material: In this Video I am using the materials from www.nienhuis.com/us/ The Original Montessori
    A chain of 100 consisting of 10 segments of 10
    A chain of 1000 consisting of 100 segments of 10
    A box containing labels:
    1 to 9 in green
    10 to 90 in blue
    100 to 900 in red
    1000 in green
    One 100 square
    Ten 100 squares
    One 1000 cube
    100 Chains
    Presentation:
    Invite the child
    Put a small mat close to the supply beads and get a tray on the small mat (put a felt mat on the tray so the beads will not rolling around on the tray).
    Take the child to the chain cabinet and Introduce him to the hundred chain
    Show him how to hold the chain with two hands carefully.
    Take one hundred square from the cabinet, take also a small container with arrows for 100 chain. This container has green, blue and red arrows.Take a counter or a bridge. Put all of them on a tray
    Bring all the material on the tray to the floor mat
    Take out the one hundred chain from the tray to the mat (don’t have to be straight)
    Point to the first segment, invite the child to count the beads or ask the child: what does it look like?. The child say: 10
    Tell him that you are going to fold the chain and see if you can make a square
    Start folding vertically, as you fold, you count, : one, two, three…ten
    When finish folding, take a hundred square and compare it, say: let’s see if it the same, say: yes, it is the same.
    Ask: How many times did we fold the chain to make a square? The child should answer: 10
    Say: 10 times 10 is one hundred, interesting!
    Invite the child to hold the left end of the chain and the guide start unfolding it, very slowly until it is a straight line.
    Place the hundred square at the right end of the chain, above the last segment.
    Take out all the arrows from the container and organize them in color (so we can see the numbers) but not in numerical sequence.
    Tell him that we are going to count.
    With your finger start counting the beads start from the left. So you count one with your finger and then look for number one on the green arrow and place the green arrow to the corresponding bead.
    Continue counting and placing the green arrow to the beads.
    When you get to ten, look for the blue arrow 10 and place it on the corresponding bead
    Continue counting 11 - 19 without placing arrows.
    When you get to 20 you stop and placing the blue arrow to the corresponding bead.
    Continue in this manner, invite the child to count and place the arrows.
    When you get to 100, place the red arrow. Invite him to see the number 100 in the red arrow
    When done
    Invite the child to read the numbers on the arrow 1 to 100: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, 20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90,100 and read backward 100 to1 the same way.
    When done, mix the arrow (according to the color) and invite the child to do the exercise
    When the child finish, invite him to put away.
    Stack the arrows according to the color and tie with a rubber band, put the arrows in the small container and put the container on the tray. Hold the chain carefully with two hands and put it on the tray. Put the bar on the tray. Bring the tray close to the beads cabinet and put everything back to their place.
    Note:
    Depending on the child, very soon you can continue to 1000 chain.

    Indirect preparation for squaring and cubing: When placing the 100 chain next to the 1000 chain, he will have a sensorial impression of the square of the numbers (square of 10) and the cube of the number (square of 100)
    Indirect preparation for multiplication: 10 times 10 is 100 and 10 times 100 is 1000
