Keep going. I walk 5 miles most days with plenty elevation gain. I’m 59 and have dropped 21 lbs . Admittedly I do intermittent low carb but I enjoy a glass of wine at weekends. 👊😎👍
hey there Paul I was looking in the description for the calorie counter I dont know if it's free but could you tell me how to find it? I can't find it in the description??? could you please help me out here?
20 years ago I was a meter reader for a local electric utility. The walking was very intense most days. The job had the incentive if you finished your work for the day you would get paid for 8 hours an only work 6. So not only did you walk a long time but it was a very intense walk. Found myself jumping over hedges and fences to save time as much as possible. I can tell you it’s incredible what walking can do for your body. I could eat large amounts of high calorie food without worrying about putting on weight. My legs were so strong it felt like they were made of steel.
I had a similar job walking job on a big hospital campus, 13 buildings as a courier walking from one building to another all day. I bet you always had people asking you "are they hiring?" I did. It's kind of a dream job. You're always outside, it helps you stay in shape and as long as you do your job you stay "under the radar." Your employer leaves you alone and you get paid. It's a good life. No need to worry about calories with all that walking.
You must have good genetics and a pretty fast metabolism. There's no way an average adult doesn't put on weight if they consume a large amount of calories by simply walking which amounts to about 1,000 calories for three hours. Diet is the one thing we need to control for weight loss purposes.
A half hour to an hour walking outside with ideally some hill walking involved is the best thing you could ever do for your physical and mental health. I've been doing that every day for the last 3 years. It becomes addictive , part of your daily routine.
Agreed I much prefer walking outside to using the treadmill. Weather circumstantially dependent obviously, and living in a northern Midwest climate weather definitely is a factor for large portions of the year. For one thing actually walking outside is even less joint impact than the mechanical treadmill style of walking in my opinion. But the fresh air scenery and again at the proper times of year sun exposure are all hugely beneficial as well. I never would’ve thought I would do this but I ended up following my wife’s lead and using a walking app with a financial incentive component in order to keep me motivated and honest. ( step bet ) there isn’t a chance in heck I’m going to allow myself to lose money over being too lazy to get my walks in! And let me assure you it does provide sufficient motivation because I have allowed myself to lapse and not be in an active game and invariably when I compare the number of steps I’ve taken it almost inevitably is less when I’m not enrolled in an active game.
@@FUKuViacom Agree 100 %. In fact when you are doing it for awhile , you forget about the weather. I'd go out regardless of wind , rain or snow. I'm lucky in that I live in the countryside in Ireland with a few nice hills to give that bit of resistance you need. I think it does have to hurt a bit to be effective. A leisurely stroll won't really give you the benefit.
Ditto ... I'm 60 and have been consistently working out for 40 years now ... I used to not take walking seriously now my wife and I swear by it. We walk 6 days a week, 5 miles per day. Still have my muscle and only use 30lb weights at home. Never lost weight like this ... true story--after 2 weeks of walking this way my wedding ring fell off and it had been stuck on my finger for years unable to move.
I'm 50 years old and over weight. I just gave up all sugar and started walking between 30 and 60 minutes per day. I feel better than I did 10 years ago!!
You can take that to the next level of you combine your new habit with cutting out absolutely ALL factory made food, even the so-called healthy stuff. My life improved RADICALLY when I made the decision to make from raw ingredients every single thing I eat. I sleep for seven to eight hours straight nightly compared to waking up every forty minutes or so for years. I can walk long distances while ONLY breathing through my nose despite the rigour and sweat. Something impossible not long ago. Reactions to certain foods I preiously could not eat have disappeared entirely. Should add that I had quit smoking altogether as well. Haven't touched or even been curious for p****graphy for ages and I certainly do NOT regret losing that pathetic vice. Although the beauty and charm and intelligence of women only ever increases for me. Barely drink any alcohol whatsoever perhaps at Christmas with family or Easter with friends and never more than one or two drinks on a given occasion. My mind is clearing of so much clutter and emotional spiritual mental gunk so now I wonder how I even managed all those years with my old worldly habits. Even after two whole years I STILL feel like I am improving by the week. Had I only known how good this would feel I would have started it ages ago. Now I read the Bible daily and listen to beautiful uplifting music and podcasts. I have discovered prayer between us and our Maker. Prayer is so much more advanced than meditation. In Prayer we connect with a God who is outside of ourselves and greater than us yet loves us and knows us more intimately than even a mother can love or know her own child. In meditation we are only connecting with ourselves and an impersonal universe that can neither feel nor hear us the way the true God does. My personal relations with family, friends, neighbours, the opposite sex and even strangers has improved from night to day. I thank the Lord Jesus for this miracle of mercy he granted me. My prayer is that more people will discover the good life our Creator wants to give them if they would only be brave enough to try.
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and ckd 2 months ago. I started almost eliminating carbs and processed food from my diet, I ate mainly eggs, fish and vegetables, twice a day and started walking everyday. I start at 6k steps per day, now I'm averaging 11k steps. My creatinine and blood sugar was tested last month and the doctor was astonished at how fast it went down, Its almost normal now. He said i was his first patient to went back to normal in a month,. He asked me what did I do and I said LOW carbs and 10k steps per day. My weight during Christmas season was 98KG, when i got diagnosed. I came back 2nd week of February and I weigh 80kg. Now I'm 76kg and I'm planning to go down to 70kg by incorporating bodyweight exercises if my tests result goes to normal.
Not to mention the digestion and mental health benefits - low stress on the joints . I thought walking was for old people but it’s actually an amazing tool
Damn.. funny I found this. I started walking like 4-5 months ago. Overweight. I was losing 0.8-1kg per week with proper diet. I went from 89kg to 72 now, I am 160cm. It had ups and down but yeah still. Now I am starting to see the muscles in my legs, I feel swollen compared to before. Everything u say is right. The only problem with walking is time. You need to devote a lot of time to see results. I am walking minimum 1.5 hours a day at 6.5km/hour pace plus some exercises with weights and some stretching so like I need at least 2.5 hours a day but still. Anyway awesome...
@@StoryMonster way to go, time can be an issue, the fact you do it is great, what would you be doing anyway? You're investing in health, that can only be good. I listen to podcasts when walking, breaks up the walk, not all the time but sometimes you need some easy listening to change it up a bit, sometimes listening to nature is perfect, sometimes the road noise is distracting so I put my AirPods in etc. Depends. Love your commitment.
I avg ~30K steps/day walking, starting every day with a 2 hours walk outside, I moved away from running 1h/day because I noticed a few things: 1) I got injured every once while running, which caused it to be less effective (and more painful) 2) When I run, I can't do anything else, focusing on podcasts throughout the 1hr run is basically impossible, but when I walk, I can actually learn using audio 3) The calories/distance is not significatly lower when I walk, and it's not like I run >2X my walking speed So yeah, it takes me 2x longer, but: + I burn more calories (more distance overall), + it's less 'wasteful' as I can focus on podcasts / audio books + it's more sustainable (less / no injuries) + as walking is not high intensity, I lose less muscle mass Only downside is less cardiovascular endurance, so I still do HIIT and calisthentics
I think the key is the zone 2 area, which for most people is more walking them jogging. As long as you can finish your sentence without taking a breath and comfortably breathe through your nose, then you're good. May it be a walk or a jog, that's the zone where you can keep it up for hours and not get hurt.
I also notice that whatever injuries I have, they disappear with walking. Sore knees, sore shoulders, sore back... all get cured when I walk day after day. I like walking in the big city to look at young hotties, too.
Fundamental body function. I don't prioritize "looking super fit," simply "health maintenance and avoiding obesity." Weather permitting, my main daily exercise is multiple walks per day. The walks are first priority, and sometimes all I do. Time permitting, secondary priorities are spine, range of motion, and core. So, dead hangs (pull-ups if I feel like it), leg raises, different stretches, basic yoga, sometimes squats & lunges. Sometimes I do other things, but that's commonly it. The rest is diet.
This is good. I started playing golf again. I am 60 now. Carry my bag and walk 18 holes 4 days a week. Started off weighing 220. 2 months later down to 193. My waist was 40 inches but now my waist is 34. I feel like a kid again. Now I can walk 36 holes a day. Feels great.
Dang bro that's awesome I play golf to but I can't walk the course yet and swing 106 times in 18 holes of golf...Think I need to start walking around the block and start off slow then start walking the golf course later thanks for the motivation that walking works and you can have fun also how's your golf game has it went down since you have more energy
@@louismfrancojr2462 you can't walk the course because you're apparently taking the long way. Start hitting the ball straighter and you'll walk the course in no time. Lol
Iam in addiction though 18months clean and sober. I started walking a year ago doing 10.000 steps. I do 15 to 30.000.steps most days I just av 2 days of in the week just to rest my body. This is helping me not just with my addiction with my mental health as well.
The 1st tip was the best. Wake up 30-120 min early, use the restroom, have a glass of water and go walk for 30-120 min. Then any extra movement throughout the day is just bonus steps.
You’re absolutely right I ran a lot of my adult life and started walking at 15% incline on a treadmill for average 30-45 min and feel fabulous not exhausted and wake up the next morning feeling like I lost a couple pounds and my body is humming so to speak thanks for the reinforcement advice!
Great video brother. I used to beat the hell out of my body running all the time. In the last year, I’ve switched over to walking in the mornings and the evenings and I’ve shredded FAR more fat than I ever did running and my body feels WAY better too. Thanks for all the videos and inspiring everyone. ✊🏻
I did a video on why walking is better than running for fat loss, this is exactly what it was about. Sure you burn more calories running the same time but it wears you down over time where walking makes you feel better over time!
awesome to hear. It sounds counter intuitive, but most good things are. I did my first walk yesterday and was drenched in sweat! Im making it a 30 day challenge and have a suspicion this maybe a game changer.
@@summondominion Yeh some people seem to have lost their grip on reality. I want to be able to run with my teenage sons if they want to go training for 45 minutes or whatever. Not: nah son, I'll walk and catch you up.
@Simon Taylor i personally dont run, i only sprint and usually do so with a parachute or do hill sprints or stair runs. I do this 2x per week. Walk one hour a day 5 days a week and lift weights 3x per week. In better shape at 40 than i was at 18
Love walking! At the gym, I would bump up the treadmill to a 13 incline and 3.0 pace, and walk for 45 minutes, burning about 500 calories. Around my neighborhood at home, I have mapped out a route that equals exactly 1 mile, and I can walk and keep track of my progress. Great video!
I've switched to walking laps around the block when they closed most of the gyms due to covid preping for a show. Never went back to the treadmill again. Nature, scenery, and there's no temptation to hold on to anything because there is nothing. Dropped below 6% bodyfat for my last show.
I started walking a flat track and after a month I lost 4lbs. Then I got info on another channel about using a back pack while walking. I walked the same amount on month 2 and I was shocked with the difference. 2nd month with back pack with 20lbs of old books I lost 9lbs. 13 total for 2 months. It is awesome!!!
Years ago I bought the Powerwalking book written by the late bodybuilder and actor, Steve Reeves. He wrote this in 1980 and if he had access to an internet, he would have started a revolution. You have this right, walking will make one leaner if done with intensity.
This guy speaks the truth... I have experienced it for myself...Seriously. I lost close to 14kgs within 2 months. Everything improved...from my mood, stamina, sleep, and more. But key factor is to control of your calorie intake and consistency. Started with an hour walks to two hour walks only because I really enjoyed it after a while(with music as my inspiration and momentum). And lots of water to flush out and burn fat.
@@sanjam11 Hi Monica, I was 113kgs then... I was on a lower carb diet(instead of zero carb as felt it wasn't as easy for me to get through my day) also avoided sugar. Did a little weights to kinda tone up. Hope this helps.
I love walking and am consciously increasing my steps continuously. However, if your circumstances allow, I’d take walking outdoors anytime over the treadmill. It has so many additional benefits (natural light exposure, stress relief from being out in nature, fresh air, etc). We just moved to the coast and walking on the beach is also a great way to increase the intensity of your walk - especially on the softer sand. Great tips overall!
Great content! I recently started taking 1-1,5 hr walks in the morning. I wake up at 5 am and bring my dog for a nice long walk. It’s my alone time as a mom and I look forward to it every day! Love that it is low stress, enjoyable and that it does a lot for your body. Feels good to have those 10k steps under my belt every day, everything else is just a bonus.
Ahhh… exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you! I did a HIIT program/gym in the past and always felt wiped out, injured and hungry (I’m 51). Gained some weight post surgery and thought I needed to go back to something intense again to lose it . However, I just started walking at a high pace/incline and it seems to be much better for my body and with intermittent fasting its burning fat fairly quick.
Your experience is exactly the same as mine in finding walking (+incline for intensity) as the most sustainable and efficient means of cardio. If you missed Paul's key words here it is:- "I look forward to my daily walk.....not caring how many calories the machine calculates".
I did 4 miles yesterday and just came back from doing another 4 miles! With doing 3 steep hills after my walking! This vedio was so helpful Paul! Thank you 🙏
Dude this is so crazy to me how walking has been the key to life physically that I needed this whole time, I’ve been awful at cardio and hated walking, I would always park the closest at stores now I park far away on purpose and take walks, and I noticed when I was walking a lot when my family visited me is when I lost some nice belly fat, so I will absolutely apply this, an increase in walking and not even worry about running.
💯 Paul's content helped a ton with my weight loss transformation. Thanks again Paul, 6 months later I'm still hovering between 178-185 and maintaining my 100lb weight loss.
Great jokes about wife and mother, I was at 305 years back, started Atkins, walking and light weights at home, I found a trail close to home with some steep inclines, it was tough at first and I only got halfway to the top, after a couple of weeks I was able to get to the top, a good hour or better walking, I dropped down to 230 and my legs were solid, I used to feel the muscles in my legs, I couldn't believe it. I have since stopped and my weight has come back over the years but walking definitely works and I need to get back on the program.
This is really motivating, because it's simple to get started and then slowly increase. I used to walk a lot in my job, but now I work from home and get very little incidental walking in. But adding a 30 minute walk into my morning is something I can do, and can build from there. Thanks for sharing this, Paul. Have a great week.
Watching this video and reading the comments is really opening my eyes! I always hear people say it (i’m hearing it a lot more since i have depression) but i was always hesitant because its an ‘old people exercise’ and it didn’t seem like it compared to the weightlifting i did in the gym. I’m gonna give this a go tomorrow! Thanks so much man🙏🏾
Been walking on a hiking trail for approximately 7 months now after 30 years of no physical exercise. I never felt better and it has become an addiction. Will not exchange it for anything. The secret is just to show up every time. Don't worry about the nitty gritty. Just get dressed and walk for 1 to 3 hours 4 to 5 times a week. Your whole life will change!
Thank you for the inspiration to get walking again, Paul! I listened to this yesterday, cleared the toys off the treadmill tonight and walked for 40 minutes. First time in along time. Only did 1.6 miles, but at 63 ya’ gotta start somewhere. Thanks again!🏃♂️
Exactly right! People wasting their time smashing cardio all day long and stressing their bodies out. Walking while listening to an interesting audiobook. Heaven😍 Great video!!
I started walking and every day hit 20000 steps, recently upped it to 22500 and now upping it again to 25000. I'm 5'-10" and in January was 210lbs, now I'm down to 185lbs. I'm in a calorie deficit and follow intermittent fasting. I still get some junk food every now and then, but I'm enjoying the balance right now. I only have my junk food at the weekend if I've hit my steps every day that week. I think it's sustainable and it's working well for me. Consistency is the key. Nothing happens over night.
I try & walk a minimum of 4 miles everyday(1 hour of constant quick movement) lost 27 lbs. in 3 months. I added a ruck with a 25 lb. plate last month, to burn 2-3 times more calories. Starting get more muscular with everyday! 8 lbs. to goal. It works folks, & the sunshine & fresh air adds even more health benefits. Great video Paul
I was part of a team where we where documenting a 62 year old man taking part in a full marathon. He almost had to amputate his leg due to diabetes at the age of 56. Then he decided to turn his life around . He was the only senior citizen who completed the marathon in 6 hours . That inspired me to start walking. It's an amazing lifestyle to have.
That's very motivating. To he clear, are you saying that walking, primarily as an intervention, reversed his diabetes or rather improved his health in a big way ?
I'm looking forward to the weather warming up so I can do 2 things. First, get my pool open. I burn a ton of calories treading water in the deep end or splashing around with the kids. Second, I take walks with my toddler around the neighborhood. We stop at all the mailboxes and he tells me what numbers are on the side of them. I get exercise and he learns something. Win/win. Plus, our 2 mile treks insure when bedtime rolls around, he's tuckered out.
@@MM-li8nk It's estimated that because of the resistance of the water and using your whole body to stay afloat, you burn approximately 3xs the calories of walking. Treading water for 20 minutes is like walking for an hour. I'll take that trade any day.
Yup I completely agree 100%. I have lost a lot of weight twice before in 2018 and 2020... usually with Keto diets and running/high intensity exercise. This time I did away with all the diets... I just started walking instead.. initially only 5,000 steps a day and within 6 weeks I was doing 20,000 steps a day minimum. I've lost in 61 days 20.1 kilos (44 pounds). I eat more normal than ever and the only thing I do different is intermittent fasting now which I almost accidentally fell into once I realised that by cutting out sugar and unhealthy carbs my hunger went away... and I would not get hungry until 3pm most days... so my window to eat is 3pm to 7pm... but more importantly I don't count macros anymore and just eat what I feel like. What is more amazing is that I am losing it at a much quicker rate than the previous 2 times.. even though seemingly I am doing much much less (feels like much less effort). Walking is just a part of my life I enjoy now and if I don't walk I feel like something is missing.
I've just started on the 5th of January. Trying for 10000 minimum. All I can say is I'm 2 stone down in less than a month and loving every minute of it 😃 The energy i have is unbelievable.
The step count aspect is really the most critical one. Bumping up from a leisurely to a brisk walk burns more calories mostly because you get more steps in the same amount of time. Conversely, you can get the same number of steps in less time. I used to run in my 30s, but gained weight since then when knee problems made me back down. But your videos where you constantly plug walking have been a real lifesaver to me. With a current 7-8k steps/day target, while tracking macros and calories, and lifting weights, I’ve been able to lose weight that I had lost hope of doing at 57 years of age 🙂
Back in college when I was an intern I would on average walk about 10,000 - 12,000 steps in a day for 6 months in 90 degree weather. I went from a waist size 32 to 26.
I started walking on the treadmill at the gym about 1 year ago for 30 minutes, 3-4 times a week. I constantly increased the incline and speed over that time. (Now I am at 7.0 incline at 4.1 speed.) I also did 15 minutes of elliptical 3-4 times a week after the walks. And i do some light-moderate weight training 5-6 days/week. I am 52 y/o and in the last year, I’ve probably lost perhaps 40 or more pounds. I am 5’9”, 153 lbs, with a 31” waist and I am in very close to the best shape of my life, especially if you factor in my age. Obviously, eating right was the biggest change I made but the treadmill walking, as cardio, played a HUGE role in my transformation. Walking is SO effective as cardio and SO easy on the body- it’s really the perfect cardio. In the last couple months I have switched from 30 mins intense walking and 15 minutes of moderate elliptical to 30 mins of intense walking, 10 minutes of light/moderate running and 5 minutes of elliptical. My goal is to keep increasing my cardio level little by little…. It’s insane. I have a resting heartrate in the low 50’s! And I bet it gets down into the 30’s at night. (At an earlier point in my life when I did about this much cardio, i did have my heart rate measured by a cardiologist one time. He made me wear a machine overnight. He discovered that my heartbeat went as low as 29 bpm during the slowest portion of my sleep.)
I've always enjoyed walking but never really made it a daily habit until recently. I'm taking an hour to an hour and a half walks in the evening and I'm really enjoying it. I've tried so many types of cardio, including what everyone on Instagram was pushing for a while which was bodyweight circuits. And to me those can leave you just as sore if not more than lifting weights. Don't want that from my cardio. HIIT seems so not ideal for anyone over 40 no matter how much some people like zuzka light love to say it's the best type of exercise as you age. Long walks are awesome and it helps with so many things, even just to clear your mind.
Absolutely brilliant video 👍 I started going on morning walks to supplement my new healthy eating. You hit all the main points , change it up , keep it going 👌👌 Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
Hippocrates was spot-on when he said “Walking is a man's best medicine” - as research has demonstrated it's effectiveness in everything from reducing blood pressure and inflammation, to improving memory and cognitive function to increasing lifespan.
Very true Zen Warrior. I do a hilly forest or grass trail walk every day with one of my greatest friends...who happens to be a Dog. We live in hilly Wales, do walks between 90 minutes to 3 hours a day, with the occasional hike or mountain trek of 4-6 hours. Low pulse, low blood pressure, fast recovery and maximal fitness off relaxed walking up the steepest slopes. I'm in my 60s and feeling great...so can anybody.
I started walking 3 miles a day while carrying (2) 35 lb dumbbells. You can't believe the endurance you build in a couple of months. Doing curls and over head presses while walking has made a tremendous difference, just be careful cause you can hurt your back.. start light and build up.
I'm doing this too..not with 35s!! But with 10#s. About 3-4miles in morning, at a brisk pace. Really gets up the sweat and I feel great. Going to bump up to 15-20lbs now lol
Watching this while on crutches post hip surgery after having to walk a mile on crutches yesterday and waking up hurting. Feeling pretty jealous of you all walking your way to 10% body fat! Definitely adding this to my list of post crutches goals since i hurt my hip trail running! Thanks 🙏👍
Im 4 months late to the party, but I love this idea. I work from home (real estate investor). Can totally work literally all day walking and talking. Will start tomorrow.
I started walking every morning.first day was 30mins.now I do an hour or more...I used to weigh 106kg,Ive had elevated cholesterol and blood pressure..had mild to moderate anxiety.now,2 months passed.im at 93kg,cholesterol levels normal and blood pressure level normal.Stopped taking my anti anxiety meds.Feeling great. For the first time in my life,I can see my ab muscles.Still hoping to lose more weight and become healthier🙂.Hoping to motivate others to do walking💯👍👍👍
I’ve been walking a month myself now and feeling great. Dealing with the same as you mentioned and this really inspires me, thank you for sharing and congrats! 😊
30 years ago I had a summer job landscaping and I used to use a walk behind mower 5 days per week. I was a big lifter at the time and was probably 220 lbs and 16% body fat. Simply walking that mower a few hours a day got me down to around 205lb and maybe 6 or 7 % BF I recall. It was the leanest I had ever been. Just lots of walking with some weight training a few days per week
This video provides valuable insights into utilizing walking effectively for fitness goals, emphasizing the simplicity and accessibility of this exercise method. The speaker's tips and encouragement offer a practical approach to achieving desired results, fostering a sense of gratitude for the accessible and sustainable fitness strategies shared.
i can attest to this. its all very true. i walk at a 11 percent incline at 3.8 - 4 speed. 5 min warm up everyday then hit the gym and at the end do 25 min of the same intensity. this is the leanest ive ever looked and i feel great. at first it was hard but your body adapts to anything you throw at it.
47 YO, for me it seems around 15K steps a day is where I start to lose weight. 10K is not enough. I'm already pretty active. Agree @5:15 - you need to find out what works - some people it might take more than another. On average, it's about 2250 steps per mile, at 3 mph = about 1 1/3 hours to get to 10,000 but it varies a little depending on stride length. Joining a hiking group can be game changing. Being around other active people will help. Limit time with friends with the bad habits. Start making new friends with good habits. Remember being normal in America means being fat and unhealthy so you have to actually be "not normal" - but if you surround yourself with healthy people, it will appear normal - until you go to Walmart of course. Good info, thanks for posting the video.
It really be that simple... People make it complicated... Thanks for making it easy and simple! I’m on a weightloss journey and I’ve been using the treadmill and calorie deficit to accomplish the bulk of it! 💯👍🏾
I walk 20 minutes in the morning after starting the coffee machine, 20 minutes after lunch and 20 minutes after dinner. It's quite effortless, enjoyable and I find no excuses not to do it. It keeps me active throughout the whole day and I get an hour of walking in. Every 3rd day I weight train at the gym.
I’ve lost 48 pounds in about five months from walking. From 238 pounds to 190! I started walking a little over 3 miles every morning bumped it up to four bumped it up to five and would mix and six and 7 mile walks periodically now I’ve been averaging about 6 miles every morning at a pace of about 3.8 mph! I walk a little over an hour and a half every morning! I don’t count my calories but I do monitor them!
the video starts at 1:15 My takeaways: 1. Track your current daily steps as you may dramatically underdo 1.1. He used to get up every day and walk 30 min 2. Start adjusting the amount of time you walk every day (e.g. an hour a day, even in a shopping mall) 3. Adjust difficulty, treadmill top incline as fast as possible without either running or touching it, same for outdoors 3.1 you may walk much longer than running or jogging, the overall calory burn will be higher 3.2 High-intensity cardio requires recovery time and it is injury prone, walk isn't
I found this video at the perfect time. I live beside a small mountain/hill, it's uneven ground and high intensity for half of it. Takes 1hr 30mins to complete the loop track. This video has motivated me to finally start using it. Thanks!
Thank you for the video. Had my gall bladder removed one month ago, January 11, 2021 and added 10 pounds since. Fairly athletic, love riding my bike, hitting the weights but hate running. Walking is a doable alternative.
You got my sub. I'm 63 and have arthritis in my knees so running or jogging is out. I try to brisk walk 1 hour a day and exercise lower body muscles daily to strengthen hams. My biggest obstacle is calorie intake. I like your analysis and break down of what works and what don't
I’m a great fan of walking. In 10 months I’ve walked nearly 1100 miles. Definitely nowhere near 10% body fat! Would be happy with 20% 😀 Also walking is great for your mental health too 😉🚶🏻♂️
Hi, because: 1. resistance training, lifting weight training, is more important if your goal losing fat. You must do it as well. Its should be your priority. 2. Your body adjust for the calories you lose on cardio and as time passes each time you do the same amount of cardio your body lose less and less calories from this activity. 3. When you build muscles then your metabolism getting faster so you burn more calories. 4. You must eat less then you burn during the week so need to follow how much you eat. To conclude ,cardio is good but resistance training of any form is superior. Good luck

I love this! People want to focus on what ever exercise seems the most efficient and hard-hitting, but really, the best workout is the one you stick to. And I love walking. Yeah! Keep convincing people that walking is good for you!
Hey Paul! I have also only have been walking to lose weight for 3 years now and I am smaller than I have been in 20 years. I walk 20 miles a day 6 days a week and on the 7th day it’s anywhere between 12-20 miles. I feel so much better now at 43 than I did in my entire 30s. Thanks for the video
@@PaulRevelia you are correct!! I work with dogs. I also have a side business, where I walk others dogs for them. And I don’t have a car since the start of the pandemic, so I have to walk to get anywhere I need to go. I am very strict on myself and don’t allow myself to go home until I have at least 20 miles for the day in. I am going for a 300 mile week this week 👍
Just getting into walking as my main daily exercise! I’m able to get up early consistently as I’m not dreading an early morning run or workout. My feet are a bit sore but no pain in knees, ankles or hips. I’m able to think, pray and talk to myself. I’m not starving like after a run or HIIT workout so I don’t eat a bunch. Love it! Always kinda thought I’m too young to be a walker (32) but it’s way more sustainable than running.
I’ve gotten down to 12% body fat after 11 months. Trying so hard for that last 4-5 pounds on my lower back. Feels impossible to get there! Thanks for the video Paul!
Add a couple of light (2-5 lbs) dumbbells and do arm and shoulder exercises while you walk. Do 25-30 reps of each exercise. Increases caloric burn, builds/tones upper body muscles which will continue to burn calories long after your workout ends. Also improves your shape, increasing the “V” which will decrease the appearance of those love handles. Builds, burns & shapes while you walk, maximizing the benefits of walking without increasing the time commitment. Keep up the great work!
YES!! Great video!! Been preaching this for years! When people ask "where do I start"...walking. I'll be referencing this video now! Thanks Paul! Subscribed!
I go to a gym. And started lengthing my time and intensity on the oleptical and I walk on the treadmill afterwards. In about 40 or so minutes of the combination of doing this in the last 2 weeks or so. I've lost 3 or 4 pounds already. I left weights to. But not heavy weights. Just lots of reps. It's amazing just how fast you can get in better shape just by making minor adjustments at first. And also I changed up my diet to. The results are starting to show. I wish I done this sooner
@@PaulRevelia Yeah, and gets your core strong. It's from my military training really. I've been injured but it is what I do when fit. There's 3 sand bags in my training pack, which is always ready. To get fit after injury I've lessoned the weight but will be back up to full weight before long. Take care.
I lost a bunch of weight several years ago...walking with 2 lb dumbbells...pumping my arms.....doing curls etc....but ultimately...it’s what you eat....
Been going out early in the morning even when it's below freezing with only a t-shirt, shorts and sandals. Depending on the temp outside, the shorter or longer i can stay out there. At 20 F, i can stay out there for 1/2 hr walking usually up hills and also sprinting and doing push ups. The great thing about walking in freezing temp is that you'll be spitting out mucus and will basically never get sick. Yeah, i do take cold showers also.
Good video ... as a runner since the age of 12 to 60 who then got hit by a car and had to switch to walking I can say it's been good in that I now listen to more podcasts and not fast music and have be able to do each day with almost zero chance of injury .
Over the past year I have walked an average of 6 miles per day. I am 10 pounds heavier and that weight isn't muscle. Moral of the story: What and how much you eat is more important than how much or far you walk.
I lost 77lbs over 18 months mostly due to diet, walking while playing golf, and swimming. The diet is roughly 2500 calories and I cut out chocolate/crisps/biscuits/sweets/soda which I ate for years on a daily basis and blew up to 231lbs.....now I'm 154lbs. The walking during golf made a huge difference, pushing the weight of a heavy golf trolley up hills etc definitely helped lose more weight during the process too.
This is the most logical and safest advice regarding weight loss and general health and living well. 21st Century people just need to walk more to wake up, to socialize, to think etc. And 100% agree about the treadmill. It can be intense AF and the recovery is almost seamless with the rest of one’s day.
Having a treadmill makes it so much easier, like there is no excuse to not get in all your steps. I got one for free off of facebook marketplace and it has helped me hit 10,000 steps every single day.
Nice, getting one for free would certainly be awesome! Currently looking at the brands available, hoping to find a good one (hopefully at a reasonable price) soon.
@@ambogogolata8249 look on Craigslist. There are always treadmills for sale in a reasonably large city [300,000 or more] and probably in some that are smaller.

Hi Paul, my name is Don, I am from Australia, 16 months ago my weight was 117kg, as of now I am 76kg which is a big achievement for me, I have been on keto with 1 meal a day and sticking to it throughout, following your Videos I have started walking 10000 steps a day and also 30 mins on the echo bike for 30 mins on low pace everyday, I still have the energy for it, My question to you is, I would like to shred and bring down my fat % as low as 10%, do I need to lift weights for me to achieve my goal or walking and echo bike is sufficient ? enough? Thoughts and ideas to achieve? My timeline is mid December to achieve under 10% body fat, currently I am 23% body fat, My second goal is to shred as much as I can Thanking you in advance
Great video as always! Coming from an athletic background I always preferred HIIT for cardio even when trying to lose fat. However, ever since I started walking to supplement fat loss, it definitely worked better for me. Being a big guy I feel it also helps me retain more muscle mass whilst cutting (most likely due to improved recovery)
I've come to enjoy the mental relaxation as much as the physical benefits of walking so much so that I'm up to 9-10 miles on my longer walks. I walk at least a half a mile backwards and uphill daily and suspect that my butt's getting rounder.

@@paolooo79 1000 to 2000 kcal extra stands for a large amount. With that, I could double my intake and still lose weight.
In the last few months twice I was walking 15 km a day for a week. Have not lost a gram.
@@fatskelton are you eating more because you're walking more?
Thank you for sharing your thoughts
Until you get mugged or ragged by some spray dog, where I live it is safer to use a treadmill for your daily routine
I'm 50 years old and over weight. I just gave up all sugar and started walking between 30 and 60 minutes per day. I feel better than I did 10 years ago!!
So happy to hear that!

Congratulations

Damn.. funny I found this.
The trick is to do something that we would be consistent. Walking worked best for me than Jogging.
I avg ~30K steps/day walking, starting every day with a 2 hours walk outside, I moved away from running 1h/day because I noticed a few things:
1) I got injured every once while running, which caused it to be less effective (and more painful)
2) When I run, I can't do anything else, focusing on podcasts throughout the 1hr run is basically impossible, but when I walk, I can actually learn using audio
3) The calories/distance is not significatly lower when I walk, and it's not like I run >2X my walking speed
So yeah, it takes me 2x longer, but:
+ I burn more calories (more distance overall),
+ it's less 'wasteful' as I can focus on podcasts / audio books
+ it's more sustainable (less / no injuries)
+ as walking is not high intensity, I lose less muscle mass
Only downside is less cardiovascular endurance, so I still do HIIT and calisthentics
wow that's a lot of steps, several hours worth for sure. I do love the time spent walking is also conducive to other activities.
If you’re running I would suggest just sprinting in short intervals. You’ll get the most out of it. Then you can walk for the rest.
Also easier to controll hunger, if you run alot you also eat alot
The most underrated exercise ever. The benefits are amazing.
I’d agree
Definitely. Especially w/a podcast on or Audible book. You can go forever.

I only have my junk food at the weekend if I've hit my steps every day that week. I think it's sustainable and it's working well for me. Consistency is the key. Nothing happens over night.
20k is the sweet spot for me. Sometimes go for around 25k, then dial it back to 10-15k the next day so my feet can thank me haha :)
Do you weight train too? Also what's your maintenance calories?
I’ve maintained low body fat for 2 1/2 years just by walking great video
That's awesome!
Amazing
Im also an advocate of walking outside instead of on a treadmill, but the treadmill works just as well if that's what people prefer.
It's an amazing lifestyle to have.
that's an amazing story!
That's very motivating. To he clear, are you saying that walking, primarily as an intervention, reversed his diabetes or rather improved his health in a big way ?
Walking in nature for 5+ hours each day is a game changer for me both physical and mental aspects
Love it
You must be retired. With 9 children and wife and full time job I don’t have 5 hours to walk in a day.
Soon as the weather warms up I seem to naturally lose a bit of fat just from the increase in time spent outdoors/activity.
Sounds great!
oh wow, never thought of treading water. Can you elaborate on the calories thing? :)
All I can say is I'm 2 stone down in less than a month and loving every minute of it 😃
The energy i have is unbelievable.
Hell yeah that’s awesome
I walk not just for health but I do it to refresh my mind!
Trust me it helps!
yes for sure I love walking for this reason!
With a current 7-8k steps/day target, while tracking macros and calories, and lifting weights, I’ve been able to lose weight that I had lost hope of doing at 57 years of age 🙂
happy to hear that!

Legend
Back in college when I was an intern I would on average walk about 10,000 - 12,000 steps in a day for 6 months in 90 degree weather. I went from a waist size 32 to 26.
i have found the same thing, in college I was walking campus all day and couldn't gain weight! Got a job and all that changed!
He discovered that my heartbeat went as low as 29 bpm during the slowest portion of my sleep.)
wow that's low!
Fantastic
Thank God no diet was involved. Just walking. That’s the most amazing transformation EVER!!!!

I started walking 3 miles a day while carrying (2) 35 lb dumbbells. You can't believe the endurance you build in a couple of months.
Doing curls and over head presses while walking has made a tremendous difference, just be careful cause you can hurt your back.. start light and build up.
wow that's impressive!
I'm doing this too..not with 35s!! But with 10#s. About 3-4miles in morning, at a brisk pace. Really gets up the sweat and I feel great.
Going to bump up to 15-20lbs now lol

30 years ago I had a summer job landscaping and I used to use a walk behind mower 5 days per week. I was a big lifter at the time and was probably 220 lbs and 16% body fat. Simply walking that mower a few hours a day got me down to around 205lb and maybe 6 or 7 % BF I recall. It was the leanest I had ever been. Just lots of walking with some weight training a few days per week
reminds me of when I got a full time job in construction, worked long hours with my hands, never took time to eat and was SHREDDED lol.
9.8% BF assuming the entire 15 lbs. that you lost was fat

Walking is too expensive in this economy
i can attest to this. its all very true. i walk at a 11 percent incline at 3.8 - 4 speed. 5 min warm up everyday then hit the gym and at the end do 25 min of the same intensity. this is the leanest ive ever looked and i feel great. at first it was hard but your body adapts to anything you throw at it.
Thank you for sharing Luis!
great advice . i have found myself lot fitter with the walking and hiking, results were quicker than my old gym work.. Stuart from Scotland
Thank you Stuart
Thank you...just started walking today on wards and waiting for this video

It really be that simple... People make it complicated... Thanks for making it easy and simple! I’m on a weightloss journey and I’ve been using the treadmill and calorie deficit to accomplish the bulk of it! 💯👍🏾
happy to provide my insights, thank you.
That’s amazing
the video starts at 1:15 My takeaways:
1. Track your current daily steps as you may dramatically underdo
1.1. He used to get up every day and walk 30 min
2. Start adjusting the amount of time you walk every day (e.g. an hour a day, even in a shopping mall)
3. Adjust difficulty, treadmill top incline as fast as possible without either running or touching it, same for outdoors
3.1 you may walk much longer than running or jogging, the overall calory burn will be higher
3.2 High-intensity cardio requires recovery time and it is injury prone, walk isn't
Thanks for the synopsis.
People like yourself, are a national treasure for us with A.D.D 😁 Thanks!!
I found this video at the perfect time. I live beside a small mountain/hill, it's uneven ground and high intensity for half of it. Takes 1hr 30mins to complete the loop track. This video has motivated me to finally start using it. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing, you are so right!
Hi, because:
1. resistance training, lifting weight training, is more important if your goal losing fat.
Good luck
Walking is free you can walk when you want get fresh air here the birds meet people change your body shape get a clear head I walk every day about ten kilometers I could not emagine not walking amen

Always kinda thought I’m too young to be a walker (32) but it’s way more sustainable than running.
You got this!
I’ve gotten down to 12% body fat after 11 months. Trying so hard for that last 4-5 pounds on my lower back. Feels impossible to get there! Thanks for the video Paul!
way to go!
Add a weighted Vest and wear it.
or you could work out your lower back muscles..
do some supermans lying on your stomach :)
