Actually no. At around 1995/96 they changed from Standard E to Eb (probably to account for James’s voice or something). Every song they have done after that have been in Eb (with some exceptions.) The reason you think it’s the live version is only because songs played live that were recorded before the key change are changed to Eb when actually it needs to be standard E to be correct, live or not.

Fair enough, but after Cliff died, look at the dramatic drop off the albums after MOP. MOP was a masterpiece musically, and especially, lyric wise. There's no doubt that had Cliff survived the bus crash, AJFA and the albums following, would've been without a doubt, melodic just as MOP was. When Cliff died, a piece of Metallica also died as well. To paraphrase Kirk "When Cliff left us, he left us not only as a friend, but as a very strong musical ally". I'm not a fan of Metallica's 90's albums, but DM wasn't bad overall, Hardwired was better than DM, but if I may, I'd say they already WERE true writers even before Cliff passed. James, Lars and Kirk all helped out to create the music as well the lyrics, it's just that Cliff had such a major and important impact on the three albums, that they weren't able to make another album as good and almost perfect as MOP.
