Thank you for being so responsive to requests from your listeners. You have put out some great videos in addition to your incredible lessons. I’m a fan, but you already know that. Your playing when you are just noodling is a level I would love to reach. I’m glad you chose this career path and are willing to share.
+vaig4 Thanks man! I have never tried my patches with a poweramp/guitar cab setup so I don't know how that would sound. I'd imagine I would EQ it differently depending on the cab it goes through.
I too have a Behringer FCB1010 but never got it to work properly. You say something about a UNO chip. How exactly does it ammeliorate the working of the Behringer and/or AxeFX? For the sake of completeness, I use a Roland GP100 as the preamp/fx and this goes into a Marshall 9060 power amp which feeds two Hughes & Kettner GL 212 cabs with Celestions. I sometimes use Roland GR-1 and GR-20 guitar synths. It's all a bit much and I'm thinking of slimming things down a bit. The Fractal seems the way to go, but right now I cannot afford it.
The Uno chip makes it possible to have a stomp box mode, which was essential for me! You can check it out here: host.mtnsys.com:81/faq-fcb/UnO%20Firmware.htm
Always usefull, Jens! I got a Yamaha THR10, pretty neat compact amp, that does have some built-in amps and effects simulations in it, but I can seem to get a tone like yours. Anyway, great job!
+Jens Larsen me too; but, being an Axe Fx Ultra owner, is very difficult to find some usefull information, or some presets...I mean, most of people have an Axe Fx II, or XL (sorry for my english, I'm argentinian)
Question: why do use a Twin amp sim, and not a Marshall sim to start off? (You say Twins have more top and bottom, whereas Marshalls are more mid-rangey; so you take a Twin, roll off the bottom and top, and add some mids with tube screamer OD - why not start off with a mid-rangey amp in the first place?)
+Mike Wicks Good question! I tried but didn't get it to work the way I wanted. I have a feeling they compress too much? I am at the moment experimenting with a Vox like amp sim, that almost works, but again the dynamic range is a lot lower. Does that make sense?
I do use an AX8 as my main rig now and have been for a few years. I still use the Ultra for teaching and it is a great unit. It still sounds good, mainly the difference is in how it reacts and the newer units are a little easier to dial in.
Jens, do you still use the Ultra or have you upgraded to a newer Fractal? I would be curious to know your take on the new ones and the advantages(or not) of upgrading (or not upgrading).
I still use the Ultra fro teaching sometimes, but I upgraded to an AX8 in 2016. The advantage was portability and built in footswitch which was a huge gain! The only downside was not having the ability to run two guitars at once for teaching.
@@JensLarsen Thanks! Are there any noticeable sonic differences between the two units? I wonder if much has changed from a DSP perspective or if the upgrades have mostly been cosmetic and/or small added functionality. What do you use for recording?
@@GTS00000 I record with the AX8. I don't know if there are many differences in how they sound, a lot of that is also the software and the models being better. They stopped updating the Ultra in 2011 and have continued improving the models since. Though I do think that the biggest difference is in how easy you get it to sound good and not really if you get it to sound good? A big difference is that there are more drive models and they sound a lot better than on the Ultra. Having A and B settings for all effects is also super useful live.
i just have one more question.. do you think going direct with a amplified speaker is better then a real cab and power Amp? in terms of quality and price point.. im thinking in one hand a jbl eon 615 or an 2x12 orange cab with mosvalve power Amp
It is really up to you and your taste. For me it was important that I could play soft and sound good so a powered speaker was the better solution. Make sure to look at how much the cab + poweramp costs and then buy an equally priced powered monitor. If you buy a cheap speaker your sound will suffer. From what I tried the K10's where pretty much the cheapest that were good enough (but this is of course 5-6 years ago) If money is an issue and you already have the cab then get a good amp like a matrix. It is very likely a better solution for you.
Hi Jens. I found this post from 2 years ago because I am in the process of switching to Ax8 for live gigs. Would your advice for a (powered) monitor still be the QSC or do you have new insights? (First try was my Schertler Unico that I use for acoustics, but I do not like it so much.)
Good night friends. Does anyone know how to tell me how to reset a Fractal fx ultra / standard, I have one and I want to leave it in factory mode. Thanks!
Sure! It's with midi I have a roland midi interface that's quite cheap. Make sure you download the old version of AXE-edit that supports Ultra. It is somewhere on the Fractal site.
yeah i buy the unit with the last firmware but is awsome to work with axe edit.. i got to get a midi interface.. thanks a lot for the quick response men i just trying to get a metal tone for live and my gold is not to sound digital and fractal can do that so im looking forward to this
I have watch the hole video and it sound good. With clean sound it's okay. But the problem with Hi-Gain stuff or fat distortion stuff. For you application is an awesome piece gear. Good review of your live and recording gear.
Man, your playing is so smooth! I would love to hear you over one of my backing tracks some time. Much respect. I've been watching a bunch of your videos. If I lived anywhere near you I would try to take some lessons from you.
It's hairband that I use as a mute for open strings, but it does not really do anything when it is behind the nut- I sometimes use it while recording or practicing legato. 🙂

Awesome video, Jens! I was unaware solid-state amps had advanced to this level and was completely convinced your tone was tube sourced.
+Jordan Logan Thank you Jordan! The digital age has done wonders for a tubeless existence of jazz guitarists!
Processing power is so cheap that its no big deal to do a physical simulation of tubes. As a metal nerd, it had certainly made my life cheaper.
Faffel True! It's also as if some Metal has embraced some of the side effects of early modellers.
Great video Jens. We have almost the same rig except the monitor speakers. Also your patches working well with a power amp and a real cab .
+vaig4 Thanks man! I have never tried my patches with a poweramp/guitar cab setup so I don't know how that would sound. I'd imagine I would EQ it differently depending on the cab it goes through.
Really interesting! Thanks for doing a setup review!
+raphirau You're welcome!
thanks so much Jens for all your advices; lot of hum in my headphones on this vidéo, will check out your music!
Glad you like it! This is a very old video so production is pretty primitive 🙂

+menosferato Thank you! I don't know that amp? Maybe somebody else who watches the video has a suggestion?
I have a lot of problem connecting the unit to the axe edit of the pc? Can you help me please?
Not that much, it's usually simple if you make sure Chrome is not running and have an ok midi interface!
Hi Jens, have you tried the Fractal FM3 yet? Do you think it would work well as a jazz/blues + live set-up with an active speaker or combo amp?
Yes, I have been using it since last year, so you can hear it on any of the new videos I have done :)
Hello Jens! I think we should found "The Ultra Users Club" jaja. Very usefull your video, thanks!!
+Claudio Giraud Thank you Claudio! I still check the Fractal forum from time to time actually.

Claudio Giraud True I guess. Did you find the Fractal AxeFx Ultra group on Facebook? That was new to me.
Yes! as soon as you told me about that group I joined it; thanks Jens!

Ah ha!
Fair enough - it just seemed a little illogical, but the EARS are the masters, No? ;-)
Mike Wicks I am also not the only guitarist who gravitates towards fender amps ☺
Indeed! Top stuff - keep up the good work!
Have you considered writing a book? All these UA-cam lessons are excellent material, surely?
Mike Wicks Thank you! ☺ I have. Right now I can't find the time. I do have a Webstore if you want some lessons that dig a bit deeper
Did you try any of the newer Axe Fx Units like Axe FX 2/3? Do you think the older Axe is still "up to date"?
I do use an AX8 as my main rig now and have been for a few years. I still use the Ultra for teaching and it is a great unit. It still sounds good, mainly the difference is in how it reacts and the newer units are a little easier to dial in.
Like your setup. What cables are you using from the FX to powered speaker? XLR or 1/4"?
1/4" because I already had that lying around :)
Hi Jens, thankyou for sharing this. Where can i download those cab IR's or are they already in the Axefx? Sounds great!!
+Adam Wilkie Thanks Adam. One of them us in the AxeFx already. It's called 1x12 open. The other I found on the forum.
+Jens Larsen Cheers!

Hi Johan, I still use the QSC K10 also with the AX8. I think that works great. The other option would be Atomic CLR monitors in my opinion.
@@JensLarsen Tnx!
Those guitars probably really help found that brown note.
Brilliant one- this one too \m/ Keep it up
+Haroon Ahmad Thanks Haroon!
Good night friends. Does anyone know how to tell me how to reset a Fractal fx ultra / standard, I have one and I want to leave it in factory mode. Thanks!
how do you set up the on and off functions on the foot switch?
I found some articles on the FCB switch and the AxeFX on the fractal forum and the internet. I don't know which ones anymore, sorry
can you teel me how to use your axe fx ultra with axe edit? how to hoke up fractal with the computer?

Hoi Jens, wat voor hoes zit er om je axe fx en waar kan ik die kopen?
Warwick Rockbag. Heb ik volgens mij bij Thomann gekocht?
Bedankt, ik ga ff kijken!

whats the fluff around the neck for?
It's hairband that I use as a mute for open strings, but it does not really do anything when it is behind the nut- I sometimes use it while recording or practicing legato. 🙂
This is beyond confusing. I just want to record guitar parts with my Axe FX presets. No BS. Can someone clearly explain how to do that?
This is not a tutorial for that, just a video about my setup. Go ask on the Fractal forum! 🙂
great video
+DATIKA SONG Thank you!
