    Full HD video 1080p. Description:
    I filmed this 1910 National Gas Engine S45 at the 20 Festa Aratura dei testa Calda Cogruzzo in Castelnovo di Sotto. In the video you can see the start up of the engine, then the machine in action at low and high revs, running to make some show. Also some details and a walkaround.
    Manifacturer: National Gas Engine, in Wellington Works, Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester, England.
    Stationary motor fueled by poor gas, obtained from combustion of wood. It was placed in a fixed position and used through flat belt to drive power generators, mills, pumps, workshops, sawmills and machine tools.
    Start up with compressed air, displacement 76.5 liter, 40 hp @ 110 rpm, water-cooled, weight 15 tons.
    Cylinder bore: 450 mm
    Cylinder stroke: 600 mm
    Date of production: 1890-1900
    Imported in Italy from France by Marenghi brothers and restored.

    The coolest thing about this engine, aside from how it looks and sounds, is the fact that it would send an OSHA inspector fleeing in terror. That thing demands respect, as there are about a dozen ways it could crush you or tear you to bits. It was clearly designed at a time when there were no allowances made for idiots.

      Just look how close his hands get to a lot of the machinery in motion. I imagine broken fingers being the most common but I would hate to imagine if anyone slipped and fell into or on top of any part of it.

      @@andrewfritz5123 am I correct to say that 44bhp KTM 390 engine could theoretically produce more torque than this with the help of gearing although having a fraction of its displacement?

    • @andrewfritz5123
      @andrewfritz5123 5 років тому +25

      Jaspreet Singh theoretically yes but that’s not taking into consideration drivetrain losses such as bearings and fluids, if you did build a gear box for it to create that amount of torque it may not be able to start it from a dead stop and either way it would be insanely slow converting like 20ft-lb (just a guess) @ 6000rpm to 1900ft-b it would need a gear ratio of roughly 1150:1 and spin at like 2 rpm

    • @JaspreetSingh-fo2qe
      @JaspreetSingh-fo2qe 5 років тому +26

      @@andrewfritz5123 Correct me if I am wrong.
      KTM 390's engine puts out 24lb ft to the wheel at 7200rpm. So, if I built a gearbox to reduce the rpms such that the output is 1900lb ft then the gear ratio would only need to be 79:1. At that gear ratio if the input shaft rotates at 7200rpm then the output would be 91rpm.
      (torque of A:torque of B=teeth of A:teeth of B;
      where, A and B are two gears.
      I wonder how you calculated 1150:1 gear ratio)
      Note that this is including the drivetrain losses in the bike and excluding the losses in the imaginary gearbox that I've made.
      The engine in this video goes to around 120rpm(using my eyes as tachometer) and that such engines generally produce peak torque at the lower end of their rev range, so I think it should be able to beat this engine in terms of torque.
      I may be wrong, but my conception is that since HP is the unit of work done, therefore two engines with the same HP should be able to do the same amount of work which directly means that if their respective output shaft rpms are matched with the help of a suitable gearbox then then the torque should also be same (neglecting transmission losses).
      Feel free to correct me.

    • @andrewfritz5123
      @andrewfritz5123 5 років тому +16

      Jaspreet Singh yah, that’s right I’m pretty sure. I fucked up somewhere in my math... well besides for fact of the engine would be sitting at 7grand the entire time and cook itself, I think you’d have 1900 ft-lb of torque.
