    "Montsy" was her nickname. Can you imagine that the was born in 1933? Sadly she passed away in 2018. She was one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century and a huge Queen-Fan.
    I once meet her in person after a concert of her. She was incredible funny and was laughing all the time. And imagine her laughing! Very, very loud! VERY LOUD from the bottom of her good heart. RIP Montsy, RIP Freddie.

      Freddy didn't write this for the Olympics. He wrote this to commemorate their meeting. The song is all about the two of them meeting and staying up all night talking and singing. It was later chosen for the Olympics.

    After meeting Freddie, Montserrat insisted upon listening to all of Freddie and Queen's music, and became a fan of Freddie in his own right.
    Later, she commented that Freddie taught her how to sing with expression, emotion and from the heart, whereas her whole career had been about the rigid and tight rules of serious opera.
    Both artists were readily accepted in each other's world.

      Paul Roberts, I'm sorry, but I think the last thing you said is not true. Being an opera singer requires a great deal of emotion on stage and Monsterrat Caballé was one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century. They both were amazing singers and both learned from each other and created wonderful music together :-) In an interview she said than working with Freddie was one of her happiest memories

      @@mariaserra6079 I have heard her (and Freddie too) use the very words I wrote, in interviews. Nobody is saying she was not great to start with.

    One day, in Barcelona, in a fine restaurant, a waiter looked up and saw the legend that is Freddie Mercury. Managing to sustain his poise, he turned to see the legend (in Spain) that is Montserrat Caballe.
    He fainted.
    Supposedly a true story.

    • @GinMae
      @GinMae 5 років тому +1

      That's a great story -- but did he faint b/c of Freddie or Montserrat? or the just the idea of them together? :)

    • @paulr2540
      @paulr2540 5 років тому +1

      @@GinMae good question. I believe, being Basque himself, it was seeing Montserrat that caused the faint. Montserrat was already a legend in Spain. Whether he would still have fainted had he not already been startled to see Freddie first we shall never know!

I love Monserrat’s spirit because she was so brave too.... against all the warnings from the opera world (Pavarotti called her and say not to do this madness). The gift of Barcelona album is beyond frontiers, is amazing, is a masterpiece which open us a window to the music you will never will have otherwise. This music cross between opera and rock world. Brings tears to my eyes (and would have done to those both of Mercury and of Caballe - both of whom I met, for I am of that generation) to witness the open-mindedness and respect which you brought to bear on this. In my time, there was sniggering: that rock and opera could have shared a stage, that a young, gay man of colour could have formed so affectionate a bond with (as she described herself) 'an old, big' white woman, even though each was a superstar in their field. You never question it, and maybe this landmark performance went a long way, three decades on, in banishing so much prejudice in so many fields. That is why it is so moving. Thank you.

A part where he could sing the way he normally does and the her part Opera. He didn't think Opera would accept him and she didn't think Rock what accept her. They sound beautiful together. A lot of people don't give any form of opera a chance. Glad you appreciated the talent in this. Freddie & Montserrat (or Montsy, as he called her) became such good friends he even confided in her about his illness. After his death, she attended the unveiling of his statue in Montreaux (where Queen did much of their recording), along with his parents, manager, Brian etc. & was moved to tears. Here's a short 3min clip of the event (& the beautiful statue):

    For a real change of pace I'd love to see you react to "Dragon Attack", both the studio version Official Video and the live Montreal '81 video. Live shows Roger doing a great drum intro & Freddie not only interacting with the crowd but with each band member. Also shows the feel of one of their indoor concerts as opposed to the big stadium events. And the studio version lets you hear all the crisp clear little bits you don't hear live. Both are great & you'd love the groove, every bit as funky as "Another One Bites the Dust".

    The history of these recordings in very interesting, and there were two different, but similar, albums made, in 1987 & 2012. The entire original album was recorded in studio, with just piano, synthesizers , a violin, a cello, a horn on Barcelona, some backing vocals on The Golden Boy, & John Deacon played bass on How Can I Go On. Then in 2012, it was remastered with the full orchestra & no synth. Rufus Tiger Taylor, Roger Taylor's son, played drums to replace the drum machine on Guide Me Home/How Can I Go On, & a real koto player was imported from Japan for La Japonaise. So the original album sounds a bit spare compared to the richness of the later one. Also Exercises In Free Love was included in the second album, but not the first one. It's great to hear real oboe, bassoon, harp, & heavenly strings! Have you heard "Ensueno" & "Exercises in Free Love" from these sessions? They are essentially the same melody, but on Ensueno, Montserrat added Spanish lyrics to Freddie's falsetto vocalizations. I have both albums, & play the second one at bedtime to quiet the monkey mind that would keep me awake.

    Freddie died in 1991, Montsie much more recently. Can you possibly imagine the two of them singing in heaven with the rest of the angels>

    He heard her at an opera, said she had the greatest voice he had ever heard, wrote this and she agreed to sing it with him....legendary. Two years latter olympics were held in Barcelona and they used this as the theme music.

    Ca ba Yea’. Is how her last name is pronounced. She is a great opera singer from Barcelona, Spain. She died in 2018.

    Glad that you enjoyed this so much, not everyone listens and appreciates so well. I think Freddie did a great deal for opera by getting people who otherwise would never have listened. You and others of your younger generations are helping this idea along further by being willing to really listen, and then to post your own reactions for others. This lady does have an exquisite voice. Her specialty was to sing the very high notes lightly so they would "float in the air" rather than belting them out. Her way took much more control of her voice. You certainly observed and enjoyed. Great job.

    Imagine someone of her calibre being a huge Freddie and Queen fan, He gave her the freedom to be more emotional in her Opera singing rather than sticking to the absolute rules of classical Opera and she was loved even more for it, Her friendship with Freddie enriched her already awesome talent and she enriched his too, They both loved passionately what they did and wanted nothing more than to be the best they could possibly be, Sadly both are no longer with us but they both left one hell of a legacy to us to enjoy forever.

    The man directing with the light saber is Brian May, the fabulous lead guitarist with Queen.

    Very nice reaction! You should also react to Queen - Stone Cold Crazy, live at the Rainbow Theatre. It is one of the first thrash metal songs ever created, Queen was often ahead of times. Or since you enjoy interesting music videos, watch I Want to Break Free.
