"Higher ground" is a song dedicated to Magnus Erlendsson, a Viking hero who refused the fight and the plunder. His philosophy was non-violence, tolerance and peace. Then why associate images of war and cruelty with this magnificent song?
I understand it's about a viking who refused to fight. Personally I was inspired by my love for this song, and the game of thrones show (which goes way deeper than just violence, there are many references to many themes other than violence that I have put in this video). It's purely just my personal inspiration, and feeling that I got when I heard this song. When you have a good piece of art (whether it be a painting, a song performance, a play), everyone will interpret it, perceive it differently and have different emotions associated to it, and that's what makes it good. As I said before it's not just violence in this video. There is a lot going on in the show (love, trust, politics, non-violent manipulation, non-violent manipulation leading to violence, anger, sadness, family, friendship, loyalty, teamwork, human nature in general, morals... etc) and watching the performance of this song made feel the game of thrones show based on all these different themes, violence just happens to be one of them. When I first saw Rasmussen singing this, I got GOT imagery with the snow, the Tormund look and the line "freeze the arrow in the air, make your mark and leave it hanging there", which is essentially when you shoot the arrow in the air, freeze it so you know where it goes and so you have precise aim when you shoot. When I heard this line being sung I think of the iconic Night King spear throw in season 7, who is one of the main antagonists, but still I could not help what I felt or envisioned when I heard the line. Also GOT being set in a similar time as Magnus Erlendsson's, I'm sure he had to deal with similar issues (like the ones I mentioned earlier) as the non-violent protagonists in GOT who had to live an extremely violent time. I just love the show and the song as a song, I can't help as to what I felt when I heard it and what I was inspired by. Everyone will be different.
