I love how the camera is positioned so low you can see the ceiling, such a subtle effect of realism and a brilliant way to incorporate it into a movie.
Kane is really pathetic. He’s been claimed to be sympathetic, but all you can really feel for him is pity. He takes out his own pain on everybody else and makes everyone around him miserable.
Kane has textbook abandonment issues. What he feels about others is not always connected to his behavior. But, to calmly take Jed's criticism, he probably does love him. Those with abandonment issues are desperate for love but afraid to give love that isn't on their own terms because they don't trust real emotional intimacy or natural love from others. He is not malicious and much as he is self-protective. He is pathetic but he is sympathetic too in my opinion. That doesn't mean we can't sympathize with those he hurts due to his issues or understand their anger. But it is tough to feel like maybe people can't love you unless it is on superficial terms. It is hard to feel unloved. Kane is not selfless, but none of us are. We are closest to selfless, when we have complete empathy and connection to others and therefore place their wellbeing at equal standing with our own or at least our own conscience (or else not feel right with ourselves). Even a seemingly "selfless" person behaves the way they do so that they can live with themselves and their conscience. But if one doesn't understand his own capacity to be loved, how can one see that emotionally investing in others is even worth it. I think Kane had moments of compassion and fondness for others to varying extents but no understanding of the true nature of love--how expansive and broad it is Take his romantic relationships--he probably had genuine feelings of love for both wives (that finger puppets scene/sore tooth scene with Susan for example), but he has never FALLEN IN love--because that requires giving one's self over to someone else, letting go and relinquishing some control. He is too insecure to do that. Jed mentions love at only Charles' terms and later Charles states that love on one's own terms is the way it is for everyone. Both of them are right to some extent. Charles is right that we can only love the way we know how to love. But Charles is wrong in that his terms are too limited, narrow, and controlled.
Not saying Kane was totally in the right, but it sure seemed like his best friend totally turned his back on him. Kane didn't do anything personally to Leland to deserve that, in my eyes anyway.
Agent Orange loves Kane but typically doesn’t understand it. Kane genuinely loved the ‘people’; Agent Orange has contempt for them and plays them for fools.

"You just want to persuade people that you love 'em so much that they ought to love you back".
Sounds like a guy who was president here. Daniel or Darren something, began with a D. Fat guy, bad hair.
look at the camera positioning, framing and staging! nothing but a film education

Didn’t he cut a hole in the floor to get this angle?

awesome scene
The best scene in the movie.
Roger said this scene and 2:01 says everything about Charlie Kane, not the line "Rosebud" 🌹🛷
Holds up as a timeless classic. 🎬📥🗳📝💌 on your terms.
You cut out before the important line
Not saying Kane was totally in the right, but it sure seemed like his best friend totally turned his back on him. Kane didn't do anything personally to Leland to deserve that, in my eyes anyway.
But Jed saw where Kane was going, and it dismayed him. Charlie was more interested in power than in people.
It's tricky - I think Jed was trying (drunkenly, yes) to tell his old friend that he had lost his way... lost sight of his original ideals.
Modern Democrats
As oppose to white supremacy and terrorism of modern Republicans? You can keep them.
@@muckymucks You really need to stop watching cable news. That garbage is bad for you.
