- What an "eggciting" shell day as we head out to Morgan Key aboard Nautical Life Shelling Tours and check out a big wrack line washup! Learn all about egg casings, how to identify what shells created them, and how these tiny shells grow to become the treasures we love to collect! We'll also collect many other treasures such as driftwood, sea whips, and of course, gorgeous seashells! Just now seeing this. Been watching a few shelling vids lately. This is by FAR the most exciting one, yet!!! I'm excited and sad at the same time. I'm ooohing, ahhing, gasping, "Look at that! Grab this!" I want to be right there, right now! Lol. Fantastic variety in one spot. Oh what fun!! Learned a few things, too. Great video!
Do the egg casings hatch in the water or on dry land? I’m so fascinated with the whole process. Just think, a shell has babies. What a creative Creator we have. 😊💗
They only hatch in water and they have to stay wet from the time the animal lays the eggs until they hatch. If they dry out, then they won’t hatch.

You'll have to have Laura answer for sure, but I don't think it's a Wentletrap. I've been fooled by these before. Once you find several Wentle's, you can tell the difference. I think she would have seen it if it was one!
Really cool to see all the different types of egg casings. I have found the Lightning Whelk egg casings a lot here in Texas on the beaches I have been to, but I haven’t ever seen any of the other ones in person and I didn’t know which ones were which animal’s. I love learning about those types of things!

Great tutorial on the different egg casings! I learned a lot. At 38:09 when you picked up the lace murex you flipped an angel wing over and missed picking it up. 😮 When you asked if we saw anything I wanted to yell, “Angel wing!” 😂
Hi Diane! YES, sometimes I'm so focused on one shell I don't even realize the others! That's the tough part about filming sometimes, my eyeballs are zeroed in on certain things I'm trying to film. Glad you were able to virtual shell and find those treasures I miss! Happy Shellidays!

I love finding dried egg casings. In April at Lovers key I found lighting whelk and horse conch. Completely dried out with baby shells still in them. About 200 whelks an 96 horse conchs.

Laura, have you tried opening an unhatched eggcase to see babies that didn't hatch. I have found dried up eggcases and cut open the unhatched cases. You may have to use a magnifying glass but you may learn a new type that way! Great video, thanks.
Absolutely! Unfortunately a lot of times the babies are not developed, or they are so small you can't properly identify what they are. BUT, I have opened egg causes to many fully formed babies and have even sent them out in the subscription shell boxes! They are so cute and tiny!

I love the drift wood. I do have a few peices on my wall from lake MICHIGAN. We dont have any shells like you have. I would love to go shelling but I have been dealing with a lot of surgeries. So it is hard to travel. Do you know of anywhere I can but shells? Or anyone who sells the shells. I think the worm shells are so neat. Thank you for showing all the different shells and the egg casings. I find it all intriguing. Thank you for all the things you show.

Are there sand dollars this time of year. Great show
Hi Helen! Not all beaches have sand dollars - some beaches have them at certain times of the year when they are breeding, but they are usually all alive. Dickman's is the opposite, it usually always has sand dollars, but rarely any that are alive!
Sometime please pick up something unusual to explain to us what they are. There were several thick looking clumps that I would like to know what they were. Not being around beaches makes us curious.edit...I went back to look, I think the clumps were old oysters that had lovely shades of pink and purple in their thick shells.

Some of the egg casings are so big. Stupid question, how big is the shell (animal) that lays those?
Not a stupid question at all! All shells, like any animal, come in a variety of sizes. The Horse Conch, which is the FL state shell and the largest in our area, can grow upto 24" in length! Whelks are also quite large and usually adults are 8-12". Other shells are smaller with their adult size being very small, it all depends on the species.
How do you tell the difference between a gaudy and a shark eye. They look the same to me.
They are different colors - Gaudys are tan/yellow and have a pattern, shark eyes are grey and have a swirl. 🙂
