Nahum references that God is slow to anger and great in power from Exodus 34. Nahum's prophetic words predict the downfall of Nineveh and Assyria as an image of how God will confront and bring down all violent human empires in His sovereign time.
God had already sent the prophet Jonah to Nineveh 150 years earlier. Nineveh had responded well to the preaching of Jonah and turned them from their evil ways to serve the Lord God. But 150 years later, Nineveh returned to idolatry, violence, and arrogance (Nahum 3:1-4). This time, the Ninevites did not heed to Nahum’s warning, and the city was brought under siege by Babylon. Nineveh's downfall causes the Assyrian Empire to fall.
“Nothing can heal your wound; your injury is fatal. Everyone who hears the news about you claps his hands at your fall, for who has not felt your endless cruelty?” Nahum 3:19
While violence and brutal conquests were the pillars that led to the success of Assyria, one of Israel's worst oppressors, such were also the seeds that led to its own destruction.
