This song is about the closing of mines in the UK in the late seventies/Early eighties, as the recession at the time under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher made it that 80% of the people at the time were suddenly out of a job. Peter put himself in the shoes of a miner who's profession was one that went from father to son for many generations. A man completely broken by the prospect of losing everything he knew. Interesting tidbit: He actually wanted Dolly Parton on this track, which according to producer Daniel Lanois was "An inspired choice." but Dolly couldn't be booked for the session. But Kate Bush not only wanted to stand in but also completely knocked it out of the park with her performance.
This wasn't the first time they worked together, far from it. She sings on his previous album too, they also did a different duet on UK TV years before.
In addition to collaboration, Peter introduced Kate to the Fairlight CMI which was an early digital programmable sampler, which she ended up using to great effect throughout the 1980s. Also to my understanding Kate was inspired by Peter's experimentation on some of his albums to write the rhythm part of a song first, which gave it a different style and sound. The results can be heard on Kate's The Dreaming album, although how many songs were actually written this way in the end, I don't know. For comparison you can listen to The Dreaming and Peter's 1980 "melt" album. Peter's four first albums don't have names, so Melt just refers to the cover.
Kate Bush was discovered at age 16 by David Gilmore of Pink Floyd while he was working on their Wish You Were Here album. HE ... was inspired... by HER. Yeah, she's good.
People have tried to find a category to put her music in but if you look closely at her shows, her lyrical content and the people who are associated with her, it's actually obvious that she's prog.

Yes, this song is really "that" old - and that good. My husband and I are 62 years old now and this was and always has been our song, because no matter how hard it gets we will still have each other.
Wow, someone finally works Kate Bush into a reaction vid! This is the song that I discovered her on back in 1986. Been a huge fan ever since. Please react to her song Aerial from her masterpiece album of the same name. The guitar work that closes out the song is just incredible. She writes all her own music and is literally a genius.
I was not long out of highschool when this song came out there was a worldwide recession and there was a lot of unemployment, at the time it felt like it was never going to get better, but it did. There have been several down turns, but given some time, so far, it comes around again. This song holds a special place for me just for that reason. I'm a fan of Peter Gabriel's work. He ranges from serious pieces like this to, bordering on silly, "Sledge Hammer" .
Peter and Kate became close friends early on in her career. Kate was artistically influenced by him as he was kind of a production teacher. He already was a settled artist originating from the band Genesis when she arrived at the scene . When she got the taste to it, she just went boom! Never For Ever, The Dreaming were her discovering her producingtalent albums, which gave her wings for the follow up album Hounds Of Love... listen to Night Of The Swallow, Houdini, Get Out Of My House (The Dreaming), Running Up That Hill, Mother Stands For Comfort, And Dream Of Sheep, Jig Of Life or Hello Earth ( Hounds Of Love).
I am by nature a positive, glass is half full, find that silver lining sort of guy, but there are times... This song always moves me, but during those dark times when I'm feeling Peter's side of it, when Kate's vocals come in...the tears flow. She helps keeping me from slipping into that total despair; I may not know how to change things around but hearing someone else say "I know there's a place where we belong"...that's pure medicine. Then comes the focus on the base line and the gentle chant like a heartbeat. This is so simple and yet so inspired
A bit of trivia about that bass line: Tony Levin took his baby daughter with him to England for the sessions, and had spare disposable diapers (nappies) in his bass case. So he stuffed one under the strings to mute them, and that’s the Super Wonder Nappy sound. A clean one, I presume ...
Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush were not lovers but they are really close friends. She first worked with him on his "Games without frontiers" song in the late seventies and he on his part introduced her to the fairlight sampler which she used on her song "babooshka" (You REALLY have to react to that one, trust me.) and "The Wedding list" (if you chose to react to that one, look for the live version 1982. She had an all star backing band. It's funny, Kate Bush somehow ends up working with so many Illuminati of the prog rock genre. - She was discovered by David Gilmour, of Pink Floyd who also produced her album "the kick inside" - She worked with Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, both from the band Genesis.
It's when we are at our worst we forget all that is good and what we can overcome. Very positive message that a lot of people need to hear, that people care about you.
This song saved many ppl from killing themselves (Peter Gabriel said he received a letter from a famous artist). So much hope 😊 Both are amazing artists on their own and Peter Gabriel at Genesis too. Both are creative and free spirits. Hopefully you check out more of them and Genesis! Thanks for your reaction 👌 They knew each other since 1978 when both started their solo career
Oh, yes, I overthink. So damn much. Anxiety, depression, all of that lies to us mentally and destroys our self-worth sometimes & this song tells us we're not weak for needing help.

"In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel is such a good song! Another great song a little different but so good is "Mama" by a band called Genesis that Peter Gabriel was in and is so good.
Man this song is great. I first saw this on Miami vice season 5 when Crocket got amnesia and thought he was his alter ego “sonny burnett “. Man it was excellent. This song plays as he remembers who he is and goes back to the station and his old friends see him. Man that is the greatest show ever made.
I sort of avoided this song back when it came out. Then I came across it as an adult when I bought his greatest hits cd. I was facing unemployment at the time. Flat out tear filled breakdown at the time.
I'm so happy you came across these two fantastic artists. Both of them are absolutely incredible in their own-right, but together is perfection. I don't think they dated. I don't recall anyway. I could be wrong.
Peter Gabriel was the leadsinger of "Genesis",the only connection with Pink Floyd is David Gilmoure teached Kate Bush how to play guitar.Peter and David supported Kate at the beginning of her career.
Peter Gabriel was the O.G. singer for GENESIS from 1967-1974 before the band's drummer Phil Collins took over and brought them worldwide commercial success. You should do some solo Phil Collins, some Peter GENESIS & Phil GENESIS (1975-1992) and "Blood of Eden" by Peter Gabriel & Sinead O'Connor. I'm a new subscriber brought to you by GEORGE CARLIN (do "Cats & Dogs" by George, too! LOL)
This song. The despondancy of a man who feels useless through inability to financially support his family from the sweat of his brow, due to the non-existence of jobs (even though this is not his fault & does not mean he is useless). The despair it causes for those who love him (trying to remind him that, breadwinner or not, they love & need him). Y'know, just that kinda lighthearted stuff.
I went through a long bout of unemployment a few years ago. Bills were piling up and we ate through our savings. At that time, if this song came on the radio, I had to change the station fast or I would have to park the car and have a cry.
1:37 As i see it, that is not a hug - that is a man desperately clinging to the last suportive thing in his life, too scared to let go of the last semblance of life support he has left. If she was not there for him to hold on to and draw support from, he would be in a corner in a fetal position covering his ears to block out the world screaming to get people away from him and his situation. At least that is how I interpret that based on the lyrics.
I am always that one too, I have Multiple Sclerosis, Auto Immune Thrombocytopenia, a Prolapsed SVC, an infinibular mass on my brain near the Pituitary stalk, Was burned in a public firework display put on by the city (which by the record you cannot really sue) and suffered burns to my face and legs along with 13 other people. So yeah I am that person who if its bad I will go through it
I always feel like I can relate. It's hard to have people's stories remind me of one of my own... Because I want to be there for them but I also want to share my experience. I've been told many times I could write a book... I think think a lot of people feel this way, it's just hard to face all the truth of what we've experienced.
At 5:38 -- yes, I overthink. I over-stress. And Kate's admonishment to "rest your head. You worry too much." -- I wish I had someone like that in my life, Billy. Sadly, sometimes in this life, you're out there on your own...
Suggestions on some Peter Gabriel songs for you, Billy: *"I Don't Remember" *"Shock the Monkey" *"Games Without Frontiers" *"In Your Eyes" *"Sledgehammer" *"Solsbury Hill" "Digging In the Dirt" "Biko" I know that's quite a list but he has so many good songs!
Yes I feel like that all the time. I do stuff for people all the time and nothing seems to go right for me and my family. I have said a fees times I can't do this anymore. Life is too much when it doesn't go right. I'm tired of life issues and my health being so bad. I'm worried all the time and anxiety gets high because I don't know when my next stroke will happen and if it will kill me. I'm strong for others and always help others out. They come to me for advice and to chat but don't ask me how I am or if I need anything. I even loaned out money I didn't have so someone could pay their bills and when I didn't get it back I got evicted cause I couldn't pay mine.
The context of this song is that this Man and Woman are going thru the great depression 1929 thru 1941.That hug is not only incouragment but LOVE BETWEEN A MAN AND WOMAN.The sun is going into an eclipse and out of it.None the reactions I have seen have gotten the point. Peter Gabriel spoke about this project in an interview. He said they told him he'd have to hug Kate Bush for like 4 minutes and he was like, "I'm there". Who would say no to that? lol
Yes Billy! I over stress waaaay too much and always have- endlessly trying to work on that- I can stress and worry myself literally sick-- loved this song and still do- please react to Peter’s song “Sledgehammer”. It was HUGE in the 80’s- this ish , big time! The video was quite innovative for its time and the song is funky- keep in mind the lyrics for it are a euphemism-😉. Hope you react to “Sledgehammer”, it popped up on you screen when this one was over- no way I could miss it! ❤️🤘🏼✌️
song about closing mine-industry in the 80 years, people loosing everything they had felt to achieve.he floor beneath your life is gone ... the ambrace is an ambrace because of protecting a man loosing his destination, his future. Peter Gabriel is more engaged with wrong parts in society then most people know.
I know why I can’t catch a break.......It’s me. I’m the one consistent variable in all my most challenging moments. That realization is why I don’t give up. I know I’ll get better. I do have friends. I’m sooooo thankful. If you don’t have friends, be strong. You are worth it. I’ll be your friend...in spirit. Love you all
Peter Gabriel has always had a wonderful feel for combining musical and visual art. I get that not everyone can like his music, but if you don't respect him you need to do more research.
I had a three year stretch of unemployment and bad jobs. This song may have been what kept me going. Peter Gabriel writes about real things. Check out "In Your Eyes" (Secret World Live) ua-cam.com/video/evN6DIGPIJM/v-deo.html
How can you pause this beautiful song? DOLLY PARTON was Peter's original choice but couldn't do it. I think it might have been too emotional for her, given her background and the song's gut wrenching lyrics. As fantastic a job Kate did, would've been interesting to hear Parton.
You missed the total eclipse. They are supposed to be a married peasant Irish couple. Anything by kB can make you think you are lost in the woods no idea how to find your way back. . This is good but if you overthink try Faith no More “Ashes to Ashes”

I love how Kate never ever lets go of him throughout. So visually powerful.
I think the point of the eclipse in the background is as a visual representation of the songs journey. Into darkness and back to light. Don't give up.

It was HUGE in the 80’s- this ish , big time! The video was quite innovative for its time and the song is funky- keep in mind the lyrics for it are a euphemism-😉. Hope you react to “Sledgehammer”, it popped up on you screen when this one was over- no way I could miss it! ❤️🤘🏼✌️
I wish billy we meet on the USA
Don't give up for me billy..i Iove you..hehehehe
What? No one listens to PG! This album, So, was singular. Very unique. Btw, The bass line is Mr Tony Levin.
song about closing mine-industry in the 80 years, people loosing everything they had felt to achieve.he floor beneath your life is gone ... the ambrace is an ambrace because of protecting a man loosing his destination, his future. Peter Gabriel is more engaged with wrong parts in society then most people know.
Yes it is the original

I'd love for you to react to more Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel.
Wow just saw this I am a huge kate bush fan you should react to wuthering heights new vocal version on the whole story album
Are you using OBS? A lot of your videos aren't properly synched, which shouldn't happen if you're using OBS
You see the song🤗🤣
I know why I can’t catch a break.......It’s me. I’m the one consistent variable in all my most challenging moments. That realization is why I don’t give up. I know I’ll get better. I do have friends. I’m sooooo thankful. If you don’t have friends, be strong. You are worth it. I’ll be your friend...in spirit. Love you all
This song was inspired by Dorothea Lange
Peter Gabriel has always had a wonderful feel for combining musical and visual art. I get that not everyone can like his music, but if you don't respect him you need to do more research.
I had a three year stretch of unemployment and bad jobs. This song may have been what kept me going. Peter Gabriel writes about real things. Check out "In Your Eyes" (Secret World Live) ua-cam.com/video/evN6DIGPIJM/v-deo.html
Suicide is preferable to being seen as a failure in his family's eyes. She's trying to convince him...
I think of suicidal veterans when I hear this song. ;/
Them 2 the original
Please do Midge Ure -If I Was!!
Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys
How can you pause this beautiful song?
DOLLY PARTON was Peter's original choice but couldn't do it.
I think it might have been too emotional for her, given her background and the song's gut wrenching lyrics.
As fantastic a job Kate did, would've been interesting to hear Parton.
This whole album was an apartheid protest for South Africa
He asked dolly Parton first and she turned it down apparently
You might also like his Games Without Frontiers, also ft Kate Bush in the chorus. ua-cam.com/video/3xZmlUV8muY/v-deo.html
Willie Nelson? Bleahh. Also: "Smarge smurgle smeefs."
You missed the total eclipse. They are supposed to be a married peasant Irish couple. Anything by kB can make you think you are lost in the woods no idea how to find your way back. . This is good but if you overthink try Faith no More “Ashes to Ashes”
React to "Firth Of Fifth" by Genesis
By the way; you don't give yourself enough credit :) You are deep, I am straight, and the sun *will* come out. Eventually.
