watching someone actually play carol of the bells is hella impressive. listening to it, i always imagine a big group of people all playing bells at the same time to get that layered feeling it has
I don't wanna come off as that guy here, but that example is not even the best example of multitasking in the video. The 5 mallet marimba piece requires by far more coordination and mallet/hand independence than the simple rhythms you hear in little drummer boy. It just seems more like "multitasking" because he's on 2 different instruments. That said both are impressive, and the fact it comes so naturally and fluidly is the mark of a skilled percussionist.
Really no offense, I'm glad you're impressed, but it's hilarious how what you call "supernatural" is by far the least impressive performance in the video
I just realized just HOW impressive this is. Not only does Mr. Porter need to get every song/instrument perfect, but he has to get them all perfect in one continuous take -- he doesn't cut
As a percussionist I always jump at the opportunity to play chimes (tubular bells). Something about the action of striking and the feedback from the bell resonates so nicely in my bones.
Ooh, Carol of the Bells is my favorite Christmas song and the Tubular Bells are my favorite instrument, that sounded absolutely amazing! Do you think you could do a video for the full song?
In high school I never got the full melody for the tubular bells. It’s so cool seeing you play a full melody on them not just whole notes for this song.
If you want to play an instrument but can’t play the harmonica I recommend a xylophone, recorder, or ukulele. I would probably go for a kids xylophone in case you don’t like it because xylophones can get expensive. It’s also okay if you want to keep working at harmonica! 😉
I had a concert yesterday! We played Up On the Housetop, Jingle Bells and We Wish You A Merry Christmas, It’s nice to see there’s a bunch of people who share the same percussion interests!
We couldn’t have a concert or be in the parade this year 😭 our band director got fired and we yet to have a replacement. We were gonna play Happy Xmas, war is over, Up on the housetop, Christmas swings, Blue Christmas, welcome Christmas, and ever ‘Twas the Parade before Christmas. Which was our parade music.
I played sax and then later transitioned to the Marimba...I hated reading sheet music and developed my play by ear technique. I still use it to this day on my keyboard 😁👍

Hey Joe, great video! Do you ever have any bloopers? I can’t help but notice that your videos are usually done in one take, unless you really are a musical god. Merry Christmas!
Yes, it’s extremely easy to hit wrong notes on mallet percussion instruments because you can’t physically feel them. I have to practice very slowly to get consistent.
My 3 year old son is autistic and he is pretty obsessed with your videos. He goes around the room to different spots as you change instruments and plays along! Brings me a lot of joy because I was also a percussionist!
Hey Joe! I started playing xylophone a couple of month ago. In the future I really want to learn this technic, when you holding 2(or more) sticks in each hand. Is it as hard to learn as it looks?)
That’s awesome! Start watching videos on Burton, musser-Steven’s and traditional cross grip. Those are the three main ways of holding the mallets. I would suggest figuring out which one feels natural to start and eventually you can learn more about all three grips. Just take small steps at a time and you can pick it up!
We’re singing Carol of the Bells for our winter choir concert so trying to sing it at a fast pace (the altos, my group, have the harmony) was really fun
This was so cool! I was wondering if you could try playing some other kind of Christmas songs with only percussion instruments like last Christmas by Wham!, All I want for Christmas is you by Mariah Carey and some other stuff of your choice, possibly something from Michael Buble. Thanks for all the awesome stuff Joe, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas.

As a vibraphone player, this man is a LEGEND. Perfect everything. The switch from Burton on Vibe to Stevens on Marimba was also extremely impressive! Also, the fact that this man can make 4 mallet AND 6 mallet is amazing. I have a friend who is going to be in DCI(Drum Corp International. The biggest outdoor band program in the world) soon, and she even struggles with holding 6 mallet, just showing this man's talent. You just earned a new subscriber. You deserve it!
