  • I decided to do a rockhounding expedition down by the border of Mexico in Southeast Arizona. I can tell you right now, I didn't stick around for long!
    In this video, I show you the wild deserts of Arizona right by the border of Mexico, and discuss whether it is safe to explore and adventure on public lands this close to the border.
    I also give you good wilderness survival tips and a surefire way to find water in the desert. I also talk about rockhounding as well, and where to find good places to go look for gemstones.
    Make sure to subscribe to this channel for more rockhounding, wilderness survival, and desert explorations!

    A few years back while exploring like you're doing, I came across a border jumper. This was just west of the Lukeville border crossing in AZ. I'm waiting for the border issue to settle down before I explore the area again. Stay safe out there!

    This is an outstanding subject and I’m happy you posted it. I hope others that don’t live in states that are on the borders can see this and understand the truth about our SW borders!
    My comment is somewhat political. But NOT in favor in any party. Our border areas have always been sketchy areas to be in. It was sketchy when my boomer parents were little. Got worse as I grew up. (70’s-80’s) it’s gotten progressively worse. In the past 4 years it bypassed passed in the risks from all years combined prior to the current time. And the 80’s & 90’s was pretty rough. Due to cocaine being smuggled in. But the amount of fentanyl is being brought in is insane amounts. Also the human trafficking is unbelievable. And when I say human trafficking I mean the people being smuggled are being smuggled with bad intentions in mind. NOT people being brought here for a better way of life. We have always had an inflow of our Mexican neighbors coming here for a better life. They weren’t a threat to anyone. But now we have people from other countries. Countries that actually hate us Americans and America. Coming here for bad intentions. Have our Presidential administration basically having a motto that everyone is welcome without vetting. Is exactly why it more dangerous then ever. Even past Presidential administrations (both sides of isles) along with our elected officials not doing anything to protect our borders. We should be able to enjoy ever part of our state (all border states should) Elected officials talk a good talk but nothing is ever done. Doesn’t help when Americans that don’t live in border states not understanding how dangerous our border states are around the borders. And thinking/advocating“ Everyone is welcome. I’m certain I’d they lived in a city on the border they’d change their opinion. With all that said, the risk of rockhounding in these areas is just not worth it. Even being well protected. I wouldn’t want to have to defend myself and then go through the hassle of proving my innocence. Not sure how I would mentally handle taking the risk of protecting myself and +aking another’s lif£ just to rockhound. Heck I wouldn’t want to be down there with multiple people that are also very well protected 😉

      This is perfectly said and I hope that all the viewers read this comment! Sketchy is a good way to put it, it definitely felt sketchy. But your perspective of living here for so long really brings it to light. Lots of bad stuff passing over the borders, drugs, trafficking, etc. Its just not good. I hope that the powers that be can see it that way and change the situation.
      That being said, I will avoid going down there unless I find a really good spot, and eve then I wouldn't go alone. And even then I might not go at all!
      Thanks for your wisdom!

      @@RusticSkills hopefully soon, an elected official will follow through with promises made regarding our borders? I’m certain you can protect yourself if you do find an amazing spot. If I found an amazing spot I’d carry a long 🔫along with a sidearm. I feel more secure going into areas in the valley/state that are labeled the worst, most unsafe areas, then going in the area’s around our borders. Because of those areas being so secluded. I suppose any areas in Arizona that are secluded (Desert/forest) has almost the same potential as the borders with exception of the trafficking. I was struggling with what words to use as to not violate community guidelines. So sketchy was a safe word.
      Thank you for posting a video on this subject and as always I loved it. And you’re most welcome. 😊

    We go out past Arivaca Lake into the Coronado national forest. There are lots of places to look for minerals. However, it's so vast and close to the border. It can be scary, especially if you have to leave your vehicle and walk aways. Have you ever been out there looking?

    • @RusticSkills
      @RusticSkills  4 місяці тому

      I have not been out there! What county is that in? Yes, it does feel a little sketchy by the border. It is probably ok but still, I definitely got spooked!

      @@RusticSkills it's in Pima County. We were out there looking for Arizona Blue Fire Opals. They have agates, geodes, and other neat things to find.

      Oh yes! I have researched and mapped that area, including the blue fire opal location! I am planning to get out that way soon. Also, isn't the ruby mining complex around there too? @@edwardmathers9437

    I’m not afraid to go out, but I’m 100% in the present. I was out today, saw one border patrol truck parked, then was scoped out by a helicopter while I was hiking. Decided it was time to go home.

      I agree, have to be really observing everything around you. The copter means they are in active pursuit, so I'd say you made the right call.

    I'm over 40 years of hiking and backpacking southern Arizona and the Southwest. I've seen signs of migrants (Usually the discarded personal items and water bottles.) and migrants themselves. Mostly in the Huachucas. And, like you said, they really don't want to be seen. I've never felt threatened nor feel any fear when hiking the desert. The further you are from a trailhead, the safer you will be. The three things that will keep you alive anywhere in the backcountry are: Pay attention. Be prepared. Use your wits. Thanks for the video. Have you checked out the Courtland/Gleeson area?

    • @RusticSkills
      @RusticSkills  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes, thank you for validating my suspicions. I believe their goal is to avoid trouble and confrontation. I don't really hike much in the Huachucas but I would like to more. I am actually planning a big expedition by Gleeson in search of turquoise, it will be a weekend camping trip!

      @@RusticSkills Have fun in Gleeson. In the late 70's we went into one of the mines near there. The George Washington mine if I remember right. Collected a few minerals samples. The ones that stick in my mind are Bi-pyramidal Wulfenite, hematite and some fibrous malachite. I don't remember seeing any turquois in the area. But, that was decades ago.

    I guess it’s pretty chancy going out by the border alone to rockhound. I am not as knowledgeable about much of it. Like you are. We are new to Arizona. I tend to be a risk taker. Would probably go. Or should I say I want too go. But my husband isn’t as much of a risk taker as I am lol.

      I am also a risk taker, more than most the men I know! But I felt pretty sketchy down there. I don't think I would go back just for the simple fact that I didn't find any cool rocks. But if I did, I sure would go back 🤠
