- There are so many things you can study, but I'd highly recommend computer science. I'm so grateful I studied computer science and ended up becoming a software engineer. This decision has changed my life for the better in so many ways. Today, I walk you through 10 reasons why I studied computer science and you should too! I hope this guide inspires you to keep coding and continue your software engineering career.

"I was able to talk with other people... technically". Big yes! This is exactly what makes me feel so happy about my current level... every time I can enter a discussion and I hear a word I understand like `in-place sorting, parameter of a function, calling a function, declaring/initializing an array". They are probably small words, but like understanding the meaning makes me always so happy.

what will you gain from a bachelors? If you are already a software developer then can't you learn anything you want to? and the pace at education will be relatively snails pace for you??
Just curious on your motivation and thinking behind going into education to learn something you have already shown you can.
What about the opportunity cost and loss of earnings while you take a break?
@@percy9228 I don't expect to take a break from working to do it. I also don't expect it to gain me much as far as making more money, it's actually because I want to continue my own learning. I am specifically going into entertainment arts and engineering. So it's going to be very video game and art focused, where as my current occupation is web development. I am sure i could learn it on my own as well, but the idea of being a part of a like minded community is why I chose to join school again. I also might continue on and do the masters they offer at the university I'm looking at. So really for me personally, it's because I think it's a fun and exciting endeavor. It's something I am passionate about and I am lucky enough to live by a university that has an amazing program (which I have attended before).
@@ryanthegale thanks, I'm somewhat in parallels to you. I have a bachelors in maths from 6 years ago and going to go back to study CS for another. It's going to wipe my life savings of £50k and the loss of earnings will total that around £100k in 3 years, so it's all or nothing haha
even though I'm 90% on board with this life course, I have niggling thoughts about self learning route since I already have a STEM degree and 3 years of self taught should (given I can maintain it) make me a competent CS.
I've come to the realisation that putting money aside, going to get a CS degree would be invaluable and give me lots of growth, personally and professionally. I'm also thinking of doing post grad. very excited, which university are you going to and when do you start?
I just started after being of for 16 yrs of college and 25 of high school lol. I want this degree more than anything.
STEM subjects is the one place where memorising is just dumb. In maths, if you know the full concept behind a subject, you don't even need to learn the formula, you can just derive it; the difference between top students in maths and normal students in maths is not memorising but understanding. You can apply the same thing to algorithms, if you know the algorithm fundamentally works, you don't need to learn any pseudocode, you can figure it out. I study both Computer Science and Mathematics and it gets tuff, but that is the fun. I also read about astronomy because it's so interesting.
I remember once I was in maths class, and the teacher was trying to teach probability and how to solve them. The method that he used was drawing the Venn diagrams using the original equation thing, and then seeing if you could think off another solution from the Venn diagram that was simpler. I hated this approach so I applied Boolean algebra and DeMorgan's theorem because logic gates have AND, OR, NOT and probability also has AND, OR, NOT so it should theoretically work. I used it and I was getting the answers way faster than the teacher. I told the teacher after class and he was so happy that he learnt it himself and taught it the next day.

First of all, love your channel. You seem like a really down to earth guy and you have great taste in music too!
Second, I recently started to study data science and i started with data structures, stats and maths. I have been having such a hard time learning data structures, been staring at easy leetcode problems for hours. I did not come from a computer science background.
But here's the deal -- Whatever it takes to win, I will do it.
I may not be smart but I sure as hell am not gonna quit, even if that takes me 5 or 10 more years to become a data scientist, I WILL do it!

Videos like these hype me up so much. I went to Fresno State right out of high school for business school. Working at State Farm at the time caused me to come to the conclusion that I didn’t want to pursue a business degree. I didn’t know what else to pursue in university so I just decided to go into trades. Became a welder and I’ve been welding since January 2022. It’s currently august 2023. I don’t want to do this for the rest of my life and I know I’ll regret not even getting a higher education. My younger sister just started her RN program at a community college and will pursue a bachelors in it as well. I don’t wanna fall behind her so I randomly got the idea to go back to college for computer science. It was just an impulsive idea but ever since I got the idea I’ve been looking into it and suddenly realized I actually learned some of this in high school. Learned about logic gates, implemented them into designs, put them into a breadboard and then created circuit boards. I also programmed an Arduino as my finishing project for that class. I remember loving that so much that I even did the work for some of my classmates in exchange for money. Right now I’m close to purchasing a course off of OneMonth.com to learn as much as I can while also getting information from my company regarding paying my college tuition since they have a program for that. I can go from being a welder to a web developer for the company (Bluescope Buildings North America). Salary ranges from $85,000-$128,000 for someone with a bachelors in computer science.

I am a lawyer but I am so bore at my career right now, I am looking to switch to something progressive and exciting, I want to build something for the world. But that little voice be telling me that I can't switch careers at 34 but I am willing to invest the next 5 years of my life to learn and grow in a new field, not yet sure which direction I want to go but I am thinking computer programming, coding and the like and I have zero knowledge. I really want to study computer science. I already have a job in a field that I don’t even like and its pretty boring doing the same thing over and over everyday no problem solving involved.
I was always afraid of math and computer science not because its hard but because I was always afraid of failure. When I started university I was studying computer science, the fact that throughout our calculus class we were only studying to take a departmental test worth 60 percent of our grade was really upsetting. Not preparing enough and then failing that class and dropping out of school made me feel like computer science was something that its not for me.
I am a big lover of chess, in fact that is the only problem solving endeavor I love the most. I know that I am where I am today through a series of wrong decisions but I will face my fears head on and study computer science with all my might.

“You will fail” this is what I needed to hear. The concepts I understand but putting it into code I struggle with
I’m starting my computer science degree now after being out of college for 16 yrs and High School for 25 yrs. I want this degree more than anything
I love your videos, it always makes me feel so motivated to start learning more! I am a data scientist and studied physics at uni before. I am coding a lot day to day, but would like to be better at programming (building end-to-end solutions and programs, rather than just experimenting in Jupyter Notebooks). In your opinion where should I start and what do I need to learn? I don't have time to go through the entire CS course, but would like to invest some of my time to learn something practical.

I wonder what you think of Charles Russell's course "Python for Everybody" on Coursera, which specifically separates computer science from programming and teaches programming.
He talks about this separation in a podcast with him as a guest (sadly I cannot find it at the moment). I think that this is an interesting point about differences between problem solving and computer science.

Nothing against Computer Science. But you shouldn't tell people that this certain academic field is great and you should study this. There are all sorts of positive and negative points about any academic field (Science, Engineering, Commerce, Business, Humanities, and Fine Arts). Let everyone have the freedom to explore and experiment in any number of academic fields.

What is your opinion on studying comp-sci by yourself rather than going to university? You already mentioned that comp-sci in university is hard enough and I wonder how much time it took for you to learn the necessary stuff in comp-sci compared to how much time it would it take for someone to teach themselves using only resources from the internet. Do you know or can you find someone who is self-taught and tell or let them tell their story?
even at the university it is "self-taught". at the university you watch almost like a youtube tutorial but in real time xD but in the class I did not get like 50% right away so you have to study at home of course. the university just provides the structure but the rest is on you. self-taught can be really dangerous because at the university you get different ppl evaluating your work. it does not mean that there are not software engineers (like my younger cousin), who started at 13 developing their own social media platform (back in 2004).

@@sala8053 the harder part is not having the group of classmate that are passionate about the same stuff as u. Also , there will be no sense of urgent. When u in class, even if the topic are really hard, u are still forcing urself to do and get over it anyway. U wont when self learning. U will just procastinate till u waste so much time. U will only learn what u want to learn, u wudnt have broader knowledge of the field.

Videos like this make me thing theres a level of coping. I just wanna be objective here and play devils advocate. But videos like this that Say "i chosen this degree because I can do si much with it... I can do this, i can create this, i can persue that..."
My question is.. why arent You? What did You do? What are You gonna really do? ... Because if You chose computer science to persue a career in telling others to persue computer science... Something doesnt add up.
And theres dozens of videos like this, about all sorts of topics and degrees and decisions.
You know what i mean?
Like for example.. he said he could build his own software company... But the company is really about courses and career advices..
We dont need more noobs in CS. This field has been flooded with zero-talent people who consider themselves "engineers" but have never touched assembler language or sysinternals. Its a joke compared to how things were in the 2010s even.
