Thank you. I am a 5th grade ELA teacher for the first time but taught for 20 years in Baltimore, Maryland. I am currently teaching for DC PUBLIC SCHOOLS my first year. Your tips were very helpful and informative.

Thank you teacher, I have to give a demo class for a potential english teacher job for 5th and 6th graders and want to be prepared, covering all bases. I am a rookie teacher and my previous experience was over five years ago.

First , If the student comes into the school with no structure then it's the parents' fault .
That's when and where a lot of classroom management falls flat .
Second , You can detain a student all day and they still not do anything .
In fact all that you the teacher are doing is setting yourself up to deal with a hour or so more of
" bad behavior " . Also , what if the student chooses not to stay detention when they have detention ? And to top it off , What if the student chooses to not come to school the next day ?
And all of this riding on the student having no structure at home leading to the parents letting the student run their home anyway .
If the student is not motivated enough to do something , forget it . It's not going to work .
    Good Luck .

Thank you so much for writing this comment Dwight. I’m sorry you don’t agree with detention. My tips could or could not work for everyone. At my it does and I do agree that motivation key. Detention has to be with parental permission and if they don’t come there will be other consequences. We also give referrals and at our district we have have alternative schools for students who need it. I wish you all the best and sorry my tips don’t work for you. Take care!

First , I'm not a teacher . I am just sharing my school experiences from when I was a young autistic school student growing up back in the day .
Second , Detention actually worked for me back when I was a young autistic student growing up because My Parents wore the pants in the house and My House was mostly a controlled environment ( in fact sometimes to a point where it walked the line of being overcontrolling ) and My Parents worked with My Teachers and under orders of hospital doctors to help get me educated so there was follow through at home on days that I had a bad day at school if you
      will .
My Teachers never gave detentions over late work or work that's not being done .
They managed that by drawing a circle if you will and that dropped your grade point average on your report card .
Yes I was disruptive in class occasionally due to my abnormal behaviors the way that I talked out at times but I always did my work if not in class , i did it at home and turned it in the very next school day .
Yes , in middle school I got detention for being disruptive but never for late turn in of work or not doing work .
I'm just saying that if your student lives in a house that doesn't have structure in it and it spills over into the school , y'all's best answer to that is giving them the ole heave ho .

Just curious what qualifications you have that would give cause for a professional educator to take your input seriously. I know this is 2021 and everyone not only sees themselves as an expert at whatever they are commenting on they take it a step further by believing they actually know more than an actual expert. In this case this teacher ( whom I do not know) is the expert whereas your channel seems to be about birthday parties. Nothing wrong with that just don’t confusing yourself with someone who has gone through the many many steps it takes to be a teacher.

Unfortunately , you don't see where I still remember my history from when I was a school student .
Yes , I am not a teacher and the teacher is touching on things from the teacher's desk , if you will but I am trying to put something out there from the student's desk if you will .
I am asking questions about what if the student does this or that especially in this case in response to what the teacher does and if you have a problem with me doing that then that is your problem .
Welcome to freedom of expression .
That freedom is there for all of us , not just you .
