Awesome! this is the kind of content I am interested in. Instead of "top 5 chronographs under 2k" (no offense to any of the other watch channels).
Interesting point from Roger about his regrets over the Rolex watch he bought as a youngster but never used and enjoyed much because he was afraid to wear it. I wonder whether there are all too many luxury timepiece owners like that?
(I myself put a nasty little dink into the second Rolex I bought within little over two months of getting it. As non-cool as that feels, I'm still glad to be wearing the watch and enjoying it, rather than to have wrapped it in cotton wool and kept it locked in the safe!)
Thanks Adrian for the series on Roger Smith - thoroughly enjoyable.
This guy is an engineer of the highest calibre. He designs uses his slide rule as it were and machines as a toolmaker. To me a hero . He also talks alot of sense reference to guys collecting g shocks? Also overcomplicating a movement because it becomes less efficient? Not a hint of snobbery on these videos. A guy I would happily have a pint with.Enjoyed all three parts so thanks!.Cheers.Len.
Using a slide rule does not make you a great engineer but in fact an incredibly inefficient engineer. The same amount of time it would take to solve a simple problem could be used much more efficiently to solve a complex problem.
Sir Smith talking about how the personal/individual joy we derive from our choices, be it inexpensive or luxury; coming from an incredible artist/watchmaker, just plain awesome, thanks for sharing/making this series A, the best.
His humility and vision are equal parts inspiring.
Fantastic series! This really adds so much more depth to our hobby. Thank you for such great content!
Thank you again Adrian for a great interview and video! Always enjoy these types of interviews, esp with RWS.
Really enjoyable series. You have very good manner in the interview and on-screen. Also love RS's insights on watch collecting and finding your niche
great job, adrian! we all really appreciate the work you’ve put into this series.
This is a fantastic series! Thank you Adrian and thank you Roger :)
What a wonderful interview series, and nicely done ! Thanks for “bringing us all along.” 👍
Cracking series of videos Adrian really enjoyed them and very different to almost every other watch channel. Roger Smith seems like a true gent and his talent is spell binding.
Fantastic video. The one question which comes to my mind is : will there be another Roger Smith in the 21st century ? I sincerely hope there will be.
Seriously enjoyed this mini-series Adrian. Great job!
Absolutely enjoyed this series!
Loved not just the watchmaking part but Roger's insights as well.
Many thanks for making this. ❤️
Thanks for taking the time to make this for us Adrian, really appreciate it =)
Loved this series. Love how you've improved over time with videos and interviews. Also thank you for answering my questions on live and chat via emails prior. You're a true scholar and gentleman. If you ever come to LA please let us know as I'd like to buy you a coffee and lunch.
Excellent series Adrian - well done!
Thanks for this series, really enjoyed! More watchmaking type videos would be greatly appreciated!
Great series. Thanks Adrian!
A perfect combination of interesting content, comfortable conversation and informal creativity: great fun to watch, thank you Adrian. (very nice with the explorer).
Love this series! Keep up the good work.
Thanks for a very fascinating video! I really love Mr. Smith‘s attitude toward watches, acknowledging that it’s entirely up to each individual what kind of watch is best. If there’s anybody who has some sort of right to be a watchsnob, it would be Roger Smith. Kind of cool to know he’s anything but.
Great work Adrian, superb photo and very interesting talks. This is really enjoying.
Great series mate, brilliant.
Thanks for this video series, it was great! Thanks
I would stare in amazement at Roger Smith watch on my wrist why would anyone spend that money on a Richard Mille
I truly enjoyed this series and thank you for making it happen. Roger's viewpoint on watchmaking itself is quite intriguing. The design phase was mind-boggling, I knew it was a chore, but never had an in depth look at that level. Great series, thank you!
Thanks Adrian for these amazing videos....loved it
Thanks for watching. Glad you liked it. 👍🏻
This should have more views. Thanks for all the hard work that went into this little series Adrian.
Loved this series
Quite rightly said.. Roger is awesome.. Simple, humble and great to converse with.. My experience with him was awesome!
Really wonderful series. Great to hear Roger talk about his thought process and what motivates him. And Adrian, great job of putting this together. This is quite high quality stuff, without being stuffy or overproduced. Did you just become an Horological Documentarian?
~ 5:43 Watches "something that he connects with" That is what is all about - the watch that you connect with.
Arguably the MOST OUTSTANDING trilogy of UA-cam content I have had the pleasure of viewing.Adrian, many thanks for putting this together. You are such a professional, and I hope you keep this style of content coming for us to enjoy. Tip of my hat to you!!
Great work as always Adrian.... living the dream!!!
A truly inspiring series Adrian, congratulations! Makes me want to do a watchmaking course if I could find one. 👍
Great vids, I live in the Isle of Man and was with Roger yesterday. Such a nice guy and great to see your vids love them thanks
Great stuff! Thank you for all the effort.
Thanks so much for watching. 👍🏻
FANTASTIC !
This was a fantastic series. What an accomplished man Roger is. Considering these accomplishments, his humility and integrity are most admirable.
Adrian, you asked excellent qustions. One qustion I had hoped for, however, would have been regarding what kind of oils he uses in his movements.
Thank you ever so much for putting these videos together.
What a fantastic series! What a cool guy Roger is, really enjoyed this type of interview great work keep it up!
I liked the point Roger made about complications reducing service intervals. I never gave consideration to this point until this interview. Thanks
Excellent video series. Thank you! I found Mr. Smith's collection of other watch brands very interesting. I wasn't surprised at his affinity for Omega, but I was a little surprised that his interest in this brand went beyond the modern co-axial movements. His regard for the 50-60 year-old Omegas was eye opening! I also wasn't too surprised at his regard for the modern Rolex, the other excellent, low maintenance movement aside from Omega(and his own movement). What shocked me is that this man, who may be the premier example of high horology, didn't exhibit an interest in other so-called high horology brands like Lange, Patek, etc.
Fantastic!
Such a great humble guy. ❤️
What an amazing series you did here...thanks!
Thanks for watching Paul. This was one my highlights. Roger was such a nice chap.
Great series Adrian, keep up the good work.👍❤️
Thanks a lot Mike.
Beautiful watches. Great watchmaker! Well produced video!
Super nice man, great video. Out of interest, could you get some information on how many watches he makes per year? Nice one Adrian you knocked it out of the park with this series.
People forget the heyday of precision engineering was British. Men like this can do a lot do bring back valuable trades. Apprentice programs and so on. What a legend
Well Done! Great line of questions. I learned a lot. Interesting he doesn't have one of his own watches. His interests is in more on the mechanical side which is what interests me.
Superb Adrian. Just read the comment below wishing they could afford one of Rogers watches, I would echo that, but would always feel uncomfortable wearing anything that cost more than twice my house! A lovely guy though and the pieces are superb, long may he continue and prosper.
Adrian, this series was fantastic. If you ever get to do a series with Francois-Paul Journe...that would be amazing.
What a wonderful series. I really enjoyed that. Doesn’t wear one of his own watches.... not surprised given the price.
these vids are so good.
Brilliant mini series and the best thing I’ve watched in a long time 👍
Great!
Great mini series videos 👍
This is very nice talk!
Defour is still #1 for me, but I must say that I really enjoyed this trilogy of videos! Amazing job!
Thanks so much for watching, and I’m glad you liked the mini series. 👍🏻
Amazing serie man. It's crazy to see he wears simple, non expensive watches.
They were great videos, massive thanks. FYI Rolex he bought when working in jeweller was black dial plexiglass Oysterdate. 🙂
Adrian, as a regular purveyor of watch videos, I really think that you should extend this idea of interviews to convey watch information. For you personally, I think it’s a good avenue because when you look at other channels that are all too often camera-facing formats with two people talking, the viewer loses the participatory aspect and feels as if they are being talked at rather than observing the passion of the watch enthusiast. Your style, in this Roger Smith trilogy, seems so much more professional and the editing and music are excellent. In a previous video of Roger on his own, he stated that he wanted to ‘make a difference’ and this really provoked some thinking in me about what we do and I believe that this is what you’re doing, in this style, for consumers of watch media. David
Excellent excellent interview. (Explorer👍🏼)
Great work and great video. The amount of time placed into each watch makes them worth that price. Unfortunately don't think I'll ever own one.
Glad you like the video and I agree about the time spent on the watches.
This was a great series, and can't wait to see inside Rolls Royce.
For watches you should do MVMT next.
Amazing
What a man 🙏
Watched this with my 10 year old daughter, she thought his watches are VERY EXPENSIVE!!! But she loved that Roger was from the Isle of Wight and loved the beauty of the watches that he creates; she is the next generation of watch lover (her Mickey Mouse watch never leaves her wrist!!)
Neel Sengupta - Isle of Man*
Neel Sengupta Roger is from Bolton, my home town. He lives and works on the Isle of Man, probably because of how many millionaires live there for tax reasons.
I knew he was from Lancashire, but didn't know he was from Bolton. He seems like such a nice man. My father in law is from Wigan, and my wife was born in Ormskirk!!
Neel Sengupta he seems to have that very strong Lancastrian engineering trait, the pursuit of simple efficiency which has its own beauty. Definitely from the same tradition as Fred Dibnah and my Dad who was a toolmaker.
Brilliant Adrian, was wondering the price of these watches. Yeah , £150k is really way above my capacity. I wonder how the feeling would be of having such time piece on a wrist, a great satisfaction I suppose. An absolute dream.
Many thanks
Great Job
Thanks so much Rafael. 👍🏻
beard looks great, keep it!
36 mm Explorer 114270... Fashion fades, Style remains !
Had rewind the video several times to be sure I heard starting price is 😳$150k!
I wonder if he replaced the lever excapement on his EXPLORER with a Co-Axial escapement like Daniels did wiith his Rolex?
I must say, these episodes with Roger Smith have been the fastest 30 odd minutes in my whole entire life. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent interview. I wish it could have been longer so we could get more of an inside view. But like I say, the only thing that irked me was Roger Smith touching the souls of his shoes. That's just not clean.
I’m looking at getting one of your nato straps but I don’t know what color to get, I have the skx009, will the blue Nato be too vibrant to go with it or would I be better just going with black?
Hi buddy, the blue is a punchy blue. I’d go with black to start with. It’s more versatile. 👍🏻
Hey Adrian, love your videos but, it’s all getting a bit “high end”, where’s that guy who spent time distressing his SKX bracelet and dabbing coffee on the dial, just saying... I’ve been with you from the start but like I said, all a bit high end , love to know what you think, if you don’t want your SKX can I have it 😉
''The World's Best Watchmaker'' wears the same watch as I do...'Back of the net'.
Hope you sent him a blackout NATO for that explorer...
Heard of Masahiro Kikuno? Watch his watches and his personality.
I wondered when Bremont would start sniffing around Bark&Jack
✌🏻
is the explorer 36 mm?
"Best watchmaker in the world". Depends on what parameters you use to define the claim. His concerns seem to be primarily with durability, longevity, serviceability and accuracy. On those he certainly he can't be faulted, or hardly bested. But in terms of complexity of complications and quality of finishing, there are others who might claim the title. Basically it's whether or not you buy into a particular philosophy of watchmaking. That's part of the reason this crazy irrational hobby can bring such immense gratification to so many diverse types.
I would like to say that I have enjoyed your three videos on Roger Smith, but I must also say that I think your title as the best watchmaker in the world is not a accurate statement there are many other watchmakers throughout the world that are equal to Roger and in some cased better, I am not trying to put Roger down in any way as what he has achieved is something to be proud of and being the apprentice to G.D, was a wonderful opportunity that a lot of watchmakers would have dreamed of. Anyway keep up the good work with the video making but be more accurate with your titles in the future.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It's actually Philippe Dufour
Roger Smith = no bullshit or watch pretension. He is fabulously honest in a business full of Kardashian vulgarity.
Wohtchh
If guy like him wears rolex Explorer...that says something
150 000?
Very good watchmaker...yes; worlds best.... no way
Ya... opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one
What does Roger Smith thinks about Daniel Wellington?
Xavier Lai lol 😂
Rather spend £200k on a Roger smith the a Richard Mille if I had that kind of money of course
the world best watchmaker is philippe dufour
I like Roger Smith but I wish he would stop touching the souls of his shoes and then touch other things. Not very clean.
Worlds Best I don't think so 🤣
