    Water is essential to life. Yet in the eyes of the law, it remains largely unprotected -- leaving many communities without access to safe drinking water, says legal scholar Kelsey Leonard. In this powerful talk, she shows why granting lakes and rivers legal "personhood" -- giving them the same legal rights as humans -- is the first step to protecting our bodies of water and fundamentally transforming how we value this vital resource.

    I watch many TED and UA-cam videos yet I still get surprised sometimes when I see how many people dislike a video. Just because we still have human rights violations (Native Americans know that better than most), that doesn't mean we should not approve of something like this. We need deep changes in our society, and the way of living. All of that requires a shift in our habits and thoughts. The amount of people disliking this video says that we're not ready for that yet. How sad...

      Never forget African Egyptians were the first to have slaves called the Israelites. Slavery was invented in Africa. Africans invented slavery. More money = more problems, more responsibility. What’s sad is the flood of globalization from England and Africa has polluted the water 💦 Blacks/whites/blacks/whites/blacks/whites it’s a chess game. The old Greek pathos to persuade by emotions. Greek is just a row boat distance away from Africa. Stop being polluted by pathological stories about poor African slaves. Don’t buy it. Don’t get polluted. Remember, protect and preserve your indigenous culture, heritage, language, food, land. North American region is the promised land and pathological lies about slavery is the pollution.

So many of us take for granted that we have access to clean water while so many around the world, especially Indigenous communities, do not. Humanity is nothing without water and it only makes sense that we protect it and care for it as water does for us. Water should have the right to non-exploitation. It should be illegal to just put whatever pollutants into water that you want. And YES, it should be very illegal that Nestle is starting to buy rivers and bodies of water to have exclusive rights. This is not okay. Water is the single most important thing for life on earth. We need to realize this and stop polluting it and make clean water for everyone one of the Top priorities in fighting the climate crisis.

    Dear Kelsey, I can understand your feelings about nature as I love the nature too. But your idea to give water a legal rights & status as human being is not acceptable.
    The reason is if corporations have legal status of person then it also have some responsibility. You can sue the corporations but can't sue the water, air etc.
    Are you getting my point?
    Yes, we can protect water from various types of polutions by practicing eco friendly lifestyle as much as we could but unless you give ideas to sue water in court, your this idea to give water as status of person is worthless.

    • @RashidMBey
      @RashidMBey 4 роки тому +7

      She's proposing we give water legal rights as a person, not as a human being.
      Also, you can sue corporations because they are subjects that act as agents in the world, the individual people responsible can face greater scrutiny and punishment. You wouldn't need to sue water - it's an object with no ambitions - and you wouldn't need to be able to sue water to confer onto it some legal rights. That's a silly framing. I feel like the water rights talk is re-orienting our approach to rights and law in general. For example, land and parks are federally protected. I can't just burn down forests - even if its publicly owned and I am part of that public.
      You think because we confer more and more rights of personhood onto animals people will sue rabbits in court because they ate their turnips? You don't really have solid ground with that framing.
