It is common to do this. Aida is a beast of a role and any moment in the huge masses where you are really not needed or clearly heard its best to save yourselve a bit for later. She didnt sing about four sentences in the big tutti. All the rest where she has her own important part she did sing.

Ci sono persone che trovano da ridire su tutto. La voce di Pavarotti potrebbe essere troppo lirica per Radames. Ma la sua Celeste Aida in questa esecuzione è tra le migliori che abbia mai ascoltato. E ho sentito molti cantanti. la sua dizione, tecnica e fraseggio sono esemplari. 10:06
@eelcj1: Grow up. Amonasro and Aida are identified as as Ethiopians which have darker skin tons than than the Egyptians. Since the opera singers playing those roles are not dark enough make-up was used. In the end they are opera singers playing characters of a different race. Where were you when Leontyne Price portrayed Madama Butterfly?
