Rock step is 56 not 12. Start of the ECS Step triple timing is to side 1&2 1&2 Rock Step (or 1&2 3&4 56). Single timing 12 34 56 if, 56 Rock Step never 12. I realize you can do this but technically incorrect and confusing to students. Rock step is not needed to start EC swing it is just used by some however does not mean timing changes. EC Swing timing 1&2 1&2 Rock Step - 6 counts.
These days it's pretty interchangeable weather people start with the rock or triple step. I interchange myself 🙂 The NDCA (National Dance Council) and DIVIDA both start the ECS basic with a rock so in this video since it's a syllabus step we tried to stick to the rock step on 1-2. East Coast Swing really became a dance when Arthur Murray studios created the basic to teach differentiating it from other 'street' swing dance styles like the Lindy Hop (which also start with a walk walk before going into triples) As English dancers adapted the 'street swing' styles into competitive dancing Jive was born which again starts with the rock step not the triples. All that being said we're mainly teaching social dancers so we want people to know it works both ways and doesn't make too much of a difference 🙂
Sure you can start on the Rock Step but that does not change the "Count" --On video explain you are starting with 56 Rock Step and all is cool. I am a 40 year Arthur Murray trained instructor, Rock Step is 56 not 12 ever. @@SocialDanceOnline
