Thanks Mike, all great to know. When I collected the free box and transfer box, it was a two man job to lift it in the back of the car! I'm still tripping over them in the garage too. 😛

Try lifting the box up and getting it on the clutch spline at the same time!
Hope that hip is heavy duty, not Britpart ones lol!

I take the passenger door off and use an engine crane through the floor to lift them out safely alone on the deck.

Brilliant Mike, just fitted my refurbished R380. Your video on diff and high low is superb. Any videos on gear lever adjustment. Thank you

I use a pit and a gearlift to take the boxes out. LT230 first, R380 second. I never thaught about to take the engine out for these jobs.

I never take a gearbox out to do a clutch - in fact if you sling the engine right, you do not have to lift it out just move it forwards - bit tight but doable

Did move the transfer on the guide studs , works really well , don't feel it is 60kg . However when pushing in the inter-media shaft , after changing the O ring , the shaft thread on the other end , nicked the O ring ( the one that never leaks ) Bummer-

On the shaft end with the thread, where the flat is it should be chamfered and smoothed down - this is the part that cuts the O ring

I used a gantry device fabricated out of 40x40 shs, that sat inside the vehicle on the floor either side of and across the tunnel. It had about half a metre of 16mm "all thread" rod with a nut sitting atop a thrust bearing through the gantry. End of the rod was welded a couple of chain links that attatched to the top of the gearbox/transfer case unit at the single balance point. The whole unit was lowered and raised by loosening or tightening the nut on the threaded rod, no lifting no struggling under the vehicle and precise steady positioning for removal/ replacement.
This device made it easy to do Disco tranny's and clutches working on my own.
But overall it was still a bugger of a job Mike.

@@BritannicaRestorations Mike, now that you don't actually get too involved in removal and refitting of the transmissions you really don't need the "special" bespoke tools. At the time I made that device I was doing a few tranny and clutch jobs for mates and I had to do them in my carport, so the time spent making the little gantry saved a lot of gut busting. I'm well past all that stuff now, just wished I would have made a drawing of the device so others could benefit, it made the job really easy.

Had to take out my Land Cruiser's auto box with transfer case on the driveway. Not sure what is was in Kilo's but in old money it was f*cking heavy.
I borrowed my neighbours motorbike lift. It was a flat steel plate that you could wind up and down with it's scissor jack.
That with a ratchet strap around the lift and gearbox really helped.

I looked at one of those jacks, and they do have potential - one problem is getting the box out and the jack in one lump - vehicle needs to be quite high

Hi Mike, I've taken a lot of these gearboxes out over the years, but I do have the luxury of a full height vehicle lift. The land Rover manual has a drawing of an adaptor that you can fabricate yourself that fits on the transmission jack and take the whole lot out in one go, crucially it shows you where the balance point of the complete unit is, I modified mine slightly and fitted it to another plate with adjuster screws, you can line it up bang on and 'plop' they go straight in. it really is a breeze to get them in and out...

I've done my ZF4 & LT230 a few times using the 8 ton long reach trolley jack and a couple of ratchet straps, still not easy but lets the jack and straps take the strain all the while I'm balancing on the curb, get the missus to pump the handle as there's nothing worse than having to crawl out from underneath to add one pump on the jack, plus when you do start doing the nuts n bolts up she can get the kettle on.

Wot? You don't use your leg to pump the jack? It's like a Jane Fonda work out!

My top tip, for what it's worth, remove the floor and seat box, then using a motor crane, with the adjustable balance attachment, then it's easy peasy, took me 8 minutes last time, from dragging the boxes under the car til it was popped into place. I have tagged before for hours of uncomfortable struggling under the car. Much easier and more pleasant to remove seat box and floor.

It's OK if it is a STD vehicle, but with the vehicles I get here with diesel heaters and extra wiring, fuse boxes, amps in the seat box you would be there all day!
