- Me and the Jeep XJ head out Solo Winter Camping in deep snow. Snow Chains, winching and digging will be the letter of the day.
I got back from the UK a couple of weeks ago and saw that we have had a huge amount of snow fall while away.
Despite that I wanted to get out for a few days and two nights to explore some wilderness roads and a nature reserver about an hour from my home to decompress from the busy Christmas brake. The temperatures are dropping to -19c in the evening and the snow conditions are powdered snow on packed snow. These are good conditions for snow wheeling and chains as the snow can be pushed easily and the packed base provides good traction for the chains to grip to.

Just got the heads back on mine, I am definitely copying your idea and relocating the turbo. I have a voyager exhaust manifold and a zj inlet, going with the standard mk1 turbo for now. This video is great motivation!
@@Jack-tx2ve Ah nice you basically have the two parts to make it happen. The stock turbo is fine for the job, I still keep mine as a backup. Let me know if you need any guidance with it all and thanks for watching.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness Thanks Mike. I am using heavy wall steel pipe for the extension to the manifold. My Voyager manifold is slightly different yours. It has the flange in the same place put it is a round hole with three studs instead of the T2 flange. It should still work fine though. Then I am using stainless turbo back with a side exit. I put a side exit on my 4.0 years ago, it makes so much sense not having the awkward routing over the rear axle.
I am retaining the standard cylindrical airbox but relocating it to the roof rack at the other end of a custom snorkel. I am pretty familiar with mig and tig so I have really been looking forward to the fun part of the project. There is the vm 6 cylinder turbo on ebay at the moment, £800 it is so tempting to get it and slot it in. I think they are a 3.8 turbo diesel, 180hp ish.
That manifold will still work fine like you said. Great that you can weld tig and mig, your going to have some fun then. I must say the mod to relocate it all has made life so much easier. It call comes out in one piece and you can access the starter from underneath without removing motor mounts etc.. I would leave that 3.8 turbo unless you can find a compressor map to see how it performs. It might not make enough power to spool it up early enough leading to massive lag and high egts. If you can find a map though then you know its worth your money.
You can always move to a gt2052v or something later, that will spool from 1400rpm right up to 2500 giving you a broad range of power instead of a sudden pull near 2000.

Mike, I have a trac lock in my 4.0 xj in a dana 35. Both the 35 and trac lock have a poor reputation however, touch wood mine has been faultless. I pulled a large fallen down tree to clear a track during a local forest fire. I was assisting the Fire Brigade. The Jeep did really well on a loose gravel surface, I was amazed at its capabilities for a relatively light vehicle.
I think you misunderstood me on the vm 6 cylinder thing. The whole engine is forsale on ebay. I think I overstated the power, its around 140hp at 2700rpm, I believe they can produce more in some applications, it looks as if this one is from a road sweeper. Obviously 6 cylinders would probably mean more heat issues but they sound great and it would have lots of torque.
I'll keep you posted on my build.

Yellow tinted glasses make a huge difference seeing in deep snow. I use a cheap pair of yellow safety glasses while snow wheeling.

You should definitely add a remote start to your truck. That would help tremendously when you up in the roof tent and need warm on the truck or start it to scare off unwanted animals. Great video!
I wonder if it would be possible to get a drone camera (DJI Mavic or something similar) so you can fly it and park it for those vehicle drive by shots, would save the headache from having to get out and plant/retrieve the camera every time.
A drone I would love but I'm always torn between upgrading the jeep and a drone when I do have some money to burn. I honestly don't mind the running around, it kind of gets me out in the environment and I get some excursive. But I wouldn't mind a few aerial shots to show the landscape.
What an absolute stunning part of the world you moved to must say it did look rather chilly in the morning nothing a good cup of tea canny fix the jeep done you proud mate 👍🏴

Thats a dam good idea with the butter. I'm pretty sure I saw some eye shine looking at me from the tree line that night. Probably a young Sami boy waiting for me to finish with Samantha so he could snatch her from the camp. I better get some thicker chains next time

Hi Mike hope you and family are doing fine. I have a question about that modification you made for the rear Axel. On a video i seen that you changed the places where the shocks are mounted. I Lilly would do that also. But...Gould you send me some information or pictures from that set up?

I love how you are always refining the setup. The slide out and table are looking great now. You should consider usb heat pads for your camera batteries and maybe even your sleeping bag. Can you charge the delta at a decent rate whilst driving? If not consider using a dc-dc step up converter from 12-24v and use the solar inputs for faster charging. Love the vids keep it up
Its a constant evolution and quite enjoyable provided its not bodywork and paint! That's a good idea for the usb heat pad for the camera, I will check it out. I get about 120 watts input into the battery but what you just recommended sounds much better! I'm so crap with electronics. I really need to dial in my power and electronics setup.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness obviously does next to no good in the winters but for summertime consider some solar mounted to the roof tent. A good sized panel mounted up there in addition to maybe a smaller foldable unit would do good to charge your multiple power stations. I have a 200 watt panel mounted to my rack on my XJ I use for my ecloflow delta mini and it keeps me topped up on multi day trips quite nicely.
Attach your keys to a bright colored lanyard or necklace while in the snow.

I bet if you had lockers it would go better. Really enjoy your videos, especially the snow, I grew up with 6 inches being a lot and it melting the next day except for up on the mountains in the shade. I got to see some 2-3 foot deep snow for the first time this spring in the rockies.
Lockers would be fantastic, I won't settle for anything but cable actuated Ox lockers though so I've got some pennies to save before that happens. In the meantime I run chains front and back and so far I've been doing well.
We have about 40cm here right now, not too much but it's getting there. 3 foot of snow is hell of a lot! Thanks for watching
I love your videos but I love love love your snow videos! They are the best! There is something about the scandi landscape in winter that is different than anywhere else - it's so beautiful. You must have blood like lava to be able to stand out in that snow with just a sweater on. Thank you so much for the wonderful video!
Haha, glad you enjoy them. I shall be back out again next week for a couple of days hopefully. I absolutely love camping in winter and I don't mind the cold provided I can take a warm brake in the tent or make a fire. The landscape is incredible as the snow just makes everything look beautiful. That place where I camped would have been a muddy logged hill in the summer but in winter its amazing.

If you want a cheap and trouble-free locker try some lunchbox lockers. I have bought Lokka for my XJ, I know everyone who actually has them installed is happy with it. And everyone who has a different type says they are shit... I bought one for the front diff, but the diff needs to be rebuilt first so it's still a box after 2 years. But it is a nice box. And they shipped from down under to Europe without any problems.
Just an idea, use skateboard deck grip tape on the arches.

Put a locker in the rear you will be amazed at how well you get around my 96 Cherokee is locked up but so far i haven't needed the front locker. Lock rite or Spartan lockers are cheaper and pretty reliable for snow wheeling.👍
I would love to. My rear track lock lsd thing seems to hold the Fort, but the front isn't good. Im looking at a front locker currently. Should make a big difference. Thanks for watching
Well, you have a large pair on you. I never knew that the JEEP didn't have a Differential Lock and you're the first person I've seen using chains on a 4x4, especially a modified set with additional links. I've been driving Russian Lada Niva with permanent 4x4 hi and low ratio with an optional diff lock; I don't have a mechanical winch fitted (relying on a flip flop version), there is no way would I risk going down some of those remote roads you did without radio backup. Although you can bury your spare tire when there are no trees to winch off, I recommend that you knock up some kind of ground anchor as for a bloke with your culinary skills, it shouldn't be too difficult to make, but mesh your front windscreen just in case it comes flying in your direction.
There is certainly a risk going out to these places in these conditions. I was out yesterday in a similar area with chains on all four tires and it made the world of difference. The rear axle has a track lock which is Jeeps LSD system but that's all I have apart from 4H, 4L. Saying that it has a chain driven T case which splits power 50/50 to the front and back axle so technically its 3 wheel drive. A front locker would make all the difference.
I considered an anchor of sorts but I will get a Dead Mans Lift which is the same thing but made of fabric. The Lada sounds cool, nice classic vehicle getting used.

Its really good tea, I think your meant to get use to the seizures after a few weeks. I;m surprised I made it out of that first ditch. I was actually worried about the winch and I should have done a double line pull.

Thanks for another great video, I really enjoy the cold weather adventures. Battery issue in cold weather - try look into the new type lithium batteries which are self heating (operating temp -20C to 60C), you could add it as an aux battery to the Jeep
That sounds like an ideal solution. Power seems to be the issue always and the batteries stop charging at 0c. I will have to look into what you described. Thanks for watching!

Good video! Stick a cheap Aussie lunch box in the rear! At least then you'll have three wheels pulling 100% before any start slipping! That kinda work is very tiring! I delivered Pepsi for over a quarter of a century! When it snowed it sucked! You had to shovel paths for the hand truck on both sides of the truck at each stop! Sometimes 20-30 a day! Plus it made a mess in the stores. You had to mop before you left!!! Made for some long cold days!

My DEFENDER has ATBs from Ashcroft in front and rear axel - this was the best mod I did to the car. I drive in deep snow in Finland - its really a different car with the ATBs....
Ah okay, that's a torson diff from what I can see. I thought about those but they cost the same as a selectable OX locker here in Sweden so I will probabaly do that. Perhaps an option for the rear though!

I know the feeling, I started it in a bivi bag sleeping on spruce bows and now i'm rolling around in the tardis. I'm quite happy with the added comfort and portability though. Your setup sounds lovely though, certainly homely I'm sure.

Those folding titanium wood stoves are a great bit of kit..slip it down the bottom of your pack..or strap it to the frame of a Alice pack...and pear it with the onetigris rock fortress...it's a palace for one...but not exactly stealth camping...🤣
Not camped in the snow yet tho....the snow missed my area in the UK..
I started off using those NATO roll mats...now it's a collapsible cot with a air mattress straped to it...😄
But like yourself...using a diesel heater or wood stove in a tent...a carbon monoxide detector is a MUST...👍

Loved the video Mike! I thing a front locker will help you get a bit further. And help you get more stuck too lol. But should also help you get un stuck a little easier. But snow that deep is probably about the limit to the Jeep?But like you’ve said many times. The type of snow makes all the difference. I’ve struggled in hard compact snow when it’s only 12” deep. And other times when it’s colder and freshly fallen it’s up to the lights and can just push right through easily. I decided to purchase F&R Detroit truetrac’s for my XJ. Not got them installed yet. But will report back when I do Mike how they handle in these conditions. I went with truetrac’s because of cost. Simplicity. No maintenance. And it’s rare I get a wheel of the ground. But if the price in Sweden far an e locker is the same as a truetrac. I would go e locker. But for me I’m Canada. The e locker is double the cost of truetrac. Mike there is a guy on UA-cam who has twin truetrac’s in his ford explorer. It’s an excellent video and demonstration as to how they work and in the conditions you drive in. I will comment back when I remember his name.

I think snow that depth is around the limit. I've ploughed a little deeper but it was really cold and the snow was fresh powder. I tried the same depth last week in wet snow and it was really hard work. Totally different.
A locker would be fantastic but like you the cost is really high here in Sweden. I can pick up a torson diff for half the price so I'm thinking a torson in the front and one day a selectable locker in the rear. I have an lsd in the rear at the moment so together that should help for now.

Man I’m rlly impressed. I had an xj with 35 studded general grabbers and long arm 6.5 inch 4.88 gears and a rear locker. Couldn’t make it through the snow u made it threw in this vid. I live in Canada and the snow for wheeling just so bad. You just sink and sink even a 2psi so I switched to Toyota lol

I haven't tried chains on all four. I've just bought another set so in the next outing I will chain up all for tires. I'm sure it will make the world or different on the front. Thanks for watching

Hey, what part was it with the seizing? Do you have a time stamp? I don't remember anything seizing when I was out.

What kind of camping are you thinking of? On foot, tent, bivi camping? I have another channel called MCQbushcraft Archive that covers almost all types of camping from sleeping on forest made beds to hammocks. There are beginner videos on there with inexpensive gear.
Otherwise vehicle camping is probably something worth building up to. The advantage of vehicle camping for me is travelling to places and being really comfortable. Buying an old SUV is always a fun project but the problem can be that the vehicle needs a lot of work before you even get into camp gear.

Any reason you haven't upgraded to lockers or maybe a lower range transfer case? Otherwise love the rig and video. I run an 80 series for distance/overlanding and an '84 4runner for snow wheeling. Your build definitely gives me ideas for both.
Nevermind- finished the video and you explained. not to mention title. Just turned onto your channel though I think I saw a few videos a few years ago maybe pre-diesel swap, not sure but will be checking out the channel.
My rigs won't support an aux or cable locker which I really wanted for simplicity. For the 80 I have Eaton Elockers and really like them and I have Grizzly (auto) lockers in the 4 runner. Some folks like air lockers for claimed simplicity of operation because they already have onboard air or planned but either way it's a pressurized air system on top of an electrical system to power it. My on board air compressors have always been finicky and now just use a portable compressor that can stay clean and dry in the cab at all times. With the 80 if I could go back in time I would put an Eaton LSD/Torsen diff in the rear and elocker in the front.
I would love lockers, but In all honestly I just prioritised other things when I had the money to do something on it. I have my eyes on an OX Locker for the Dana 30. Its a manual cable one that they sell here in Europe. I am fairly happy with the LSD in the rear as it actually seems to work quite well. It does need swapping out though for an actual locker at some stage.

Finally got around to watching through this channel and I've been having a blast. Thanks for all the posts! Being inexperienced with overlanding and winter parking, I had a few questions. Did you not upgrade to locking diffs for a reason? Would you at any point chain the front tires as well? Would the engine heater be required for a gasoline engine in the same environment? Hi and thanks for watching! The only traction aid I have currently is the factory Track Lock in the rear. So basically the Jeep LSD in the 8.25. I'm installing a front locker this summer in preparation for the coming winter. Most likely an E locker.
I do run chains on all four tires but when in deeper snow i've found that rear chains have helped more than having them on all four tires, despite what I'm told. I've just found that when the front is on 4psi and the rears have chains, the front floats and the rear pushes keeping the snow resistance down on the front end. Sort of like a snow mobile. I have run them on all four tires, but normally when the snow doesn't max out the ground clearance of the jeep and its compacted and icy.
I have a slightly different engine heater now that uses a diesel heater but I don't think its entirely necessary for a Gasoline engine as its not relying on compression to combust. Perhaps in temps below -13F you would want an oil warming element for a gasoline engine, but even then they start much better than diesels in such conditions.

Those 2.5 diesels really don't have any power? Idk how many blizzards I've driven through and never once used 4Lo on the 4.0. Love the videos tho.
Yeah around 130hp and 300+ nm of torque at 2krpm, but then I've modified mine.I personally love it and I've driven a few 4.0s.
I can gun it in 4h in powder but the torque will 100 percent eat a u joint or brake something expensive. Better I drive like my grandma.
Mike you mentioned the rear lsd in the jeep, is it a trac-lock?
I'm not sure, its a Chrysler 8.25 29 spline with a factory track lock. That's basically what its called, from the looks of it, its a clutch pack with springs, hence the LSD additive I have to put in.
Is the Jeep with all the modifications legal to drive/register in Sweden?

How reliable has the diesel been for you?
Its been great to date. I mean I have rebuilt the engine, put on aftermarket heads, multilayer metal head gasket, modified the manifolds, different turbo, fuel pump etc.. etc... I've done lots to it for more hp and better cooling. The engine itself though is still the same. They are solid agricultural engines at heart, just have shit heads but if you put on some AMC heads you don't get issues.
Do you just put chains on the rear?
I have chains for all four tires now. With all four it makes a huge difference but I often start with the rear if I'm uncertain about how useful the chains will be in the snow conditions
